country music was that this is where the best songwriting lies Songwriting is what I enjoy doing the most And the raw honesty I put into my songs is more prevalent in country music That s when I started finding these artists who were new to me Gram Parsons Buck Owens Waylon Jennings Willie Nelson and later on Sturgill Simpson Morrow is a graduate of the Independent Artist Program at Musicians Institute in Hollywood It was about getting a grasp of what I wanted to do notes Morrow of his education I met my producer Eric Corne and he s been crucial for me in continuing this journey of finding who I am as a musician what kind of stories I can tell and how to make those stories sound Morrow also notes the influence of his songwriting instructor Michael Anderson Michael was just very critical Before I could kind of get by on my voice or singing loud or high notes but Michael didn t care about that He d say You need to say something that makes sense to you and the person who is listening With his previous full length Ephemeral Morrow offered an unapologetic diary of addiction and recovery Now at age 24 he counterbalances this harrowing darkness There Is No Map opens with Barely Holding On a somber lyric offset by a jaunty rhythm from the ebullient band A lot of my songs are that dichotomy notes Morrow I write lyrics especially on my first record that are straight out depressing I don t want to make people feel bad I ve got to put some kind of spin on this to make it sound nicer The song Green says The same old bullshit don t make the grass green lyrics that Morrow says were inspired by his slot in a songwriting round in Studio City CA The guy who came up after me had a gorgeous brutal voice but he wasn t saying anything At one point I think the chorus was I love you and I miss you It made me mad I felt violated This is a sacred thing to me He has such a gift but his music is not going to connect people to make them think to help them As There Is No Map progresses the orchestration becomes starker and the songs more somber Morrow says this is intentional We went into this record with the intention of making an album not singles I needed to tell a story and I can t do that in three and a half minutes There has to have a beginning middle and an end Front to back that s the intention What s the point of reading the first couple chapters of a book and saying it sucks Good things are on the horizon for Sam Morrow including a slot at SXSW in Austin TX and plans for a forthcoming U K tour I m not real flashy Morrow avows I m

was very young I started writing poetry I always loved music played piano wrote creatively and sang so I started turning my poetry into pop songs From then on that s the way I expressed myself to put my emotions on paper I was very private but I learned you can t be like that you have to be an open book especially if you are collaborating Influenced by the music of the day No Doubt s Tragic Kingdom and Alanis Morissette s Jagged Little Pill Jean also embraced the power of classic blues rock of Janis Joplin bands like Queen and Led Zeppelin and the polished pop of Britney Spears Touring with the cover band Liquid Blue she was indoctrinated into live performing and learned which songs worked best for diverse audiences Cover songs helped me to be in tune with different styles I think a well written song can be done in any genre Ballas an accomplished musician who studied flamenco guitar and plays a variety of string instruments plus percussion drums and piano is a studio veteran with a deep well of rhythmic influences that underpin the Alexander Jean sound He is also an award winning dancer and choreographer who has competed on Dancing with the Stars since 2007 Roses and Violets was spotlighted on the TV competition as danced by Derek Hough and Bindi Irwin in a Viennese Waltz segment Roses and Violets was also used on Duck Dynasty The music that we are creating is very syncable says Jean We are experimenting with a more cinematic sound BC Jean s songwriting career was given a massive updraft with If I Were a Boy a song she co wrote with Toby Gad As recorded by Beyonce it became a worldwide smash from the diva s I Am Sasha Fierce reaching No 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No 2 on the Hot Dance Club Play chart in 2009 Jean subsequently signed with Clive Davis for his J Records imprint and released a series of well regarded singles Jean says that the phrase that became the title If I Were a Boy is something that she still says every day Back then I said I would do whatever I wanted Now that I m in a healthy relationship I would be a good man work out and enjoy the testosterone BC Jean and Mark Ballas are linked romantically as well as professionally As collaborators Jean says that their skills are compatible We don t have disagreements because we trust each other If someone feels strongly then we go with that because our strengths are complementary With the name of their musical pairing configured from their middle names Alexander Jean has eight songs completed in the studio and will possibly release an EP We re letting the whole process ride itself out notes Jean We want to keep this organic vibe When we do what we love and listeners connect it s the best feeling in the

ended up being a successful engineer working with The Eagles and Don Henley and cutting his teeth working with Jimmy Iovine Rob had an early demo tape and Jimmy offered this non existent band studio time and that was the catalyst But Bassett still needed an income so Jacobs referred him to the Record Plant the recording studio where he toiled as a night janitor It was the heyday of hair metal and a lot of really crazy rock roll going on It was really fun I learned a lot about the studio and the personalities of the business really quickly Bassett worked with Shinedown and was honored with ASCAP Pop Awards for the band s Second Chance in 2010 and If You Only Knew in 2011 before going on to co write their next two full length albums He also worked with Halestorm and contributed as a songwriter to their Grammy winning 2013 hit Love Bites So Do I For the millions who have viewed Elle King s Ex s and Oh s video Bassett says that her onscreen portrayal is dead on You see so many artists who are so cautious about the way that they re presenting themselves trying to please the record companies She is her own person and that s probably what I love the most about her A close second is her voice which is amazing Written with Bassett playing an old Kay guitar the song was recorded in a couple of hours The demo is actually the recording She sang it three or four times and all the guitars are first takes Fight Song Bassett says mirrors the frustration that Rachel Platten was experiencing in her career Although the label liked it nothing happened until Platten began doing a record on her own and released the song on the Internet She found out about this woman on the East Coast who had advanced stage cancer and Fight Song became her mantra Rachel took a camera crew and surprised the woman with the song The video went viral and picked up some steam then a station in Baltimore started playing it and requests came flooding in With a solar powered studio in Malibu and a variety of projects on the horizon including machineheart a new band signed to Columbia that he is developing Bassett appreciates the success that his longevity has provided He also wants new creators to understand that they have unprecedented power When I started out you needed to go to a big studio Now with a laptop and a couple of hundred bucks you can have the same program that every world class producer is using Learn to do everything yourself so you don t have to rely on anyone Basset notes that because of recording software and TuneCore an aspiring artist can not only make a record but also distribute it in the same fashion as a major label When kids realize they have that power then they re not

Why He Inked with Atlantic At 23 Adam has been formulating these beats since he was 15 Practicing non stop he says Hearing something dope and repeating it over and over He attended Hampton University as an English major but when he configured a micro studio in his dorm room with a small keyboard and a MacBook Pro he was instantly in the business of creating music and releasing mixtapes Collaborating on the 2 Chainz smash I m Different with DJ Mustard in 2012 propelled him directly into the big leagues of the music business To build the beats Adam first utilized the programs Reason and Logic and the samples offered by Free Loops Lately he is more reliant on MPC and Abelton I went to Miami to work with Jim Jonsin and got into Abelton he notes He is also a fan of the heady club rhythms of EDM and finds inspiration from the website community offered on Beatport In a genre where credit often goes to the bigger brand as Adam observes being given his due both creatively and financially has been a challenge As widely reported by the hip hop press Adam has successfully adjusted the credits from his earlier collaborations with DJ Mustard It s a little bit confusing in today s generation he explains The bigger brand gets the bigger check even if the bigger brand didn t do all of the work That s not really fair and that s not keeping the integrity of the music Companies need to figure it out There are talented people who are unheard of who have these stories When they tell me I m like Wow you are really the one you should be in a way bigger place than you are now Labels need to realize that Adam says that key moments emerged through specific songs in creating his signature identity Show Me by Kid Ink and Chris Brown was the maturation of the sound that I had been experimenting with he observes He extended his sonic identity with My Main by Mila J and Ty Dolla ign s Paranoid featuring B o B With My Hitta I made the beat put it in the right hands and YG made it a worldwide hit We started in the same place and worked as a team and look what we got Read More B o B Gets All Psycadelik on Us At this juncture Adam has launched his own imprint 4th Quarter Entertainment While he envisions eventually partnering with a major label it is not his primary motivation I ve been searching for good music first says Adam I think everybody s searching for the deals first instead of what really matters and that s the music Independent rappers can do it on their own I respect that my first initial reaction is to figure out the music first and that way have something to offer With 4th Quarter Entertainment Adam intends on giving credit where credit

for the song to tell me what it s going to be and I figure it out from there Rich vocal harmonies supplement the band s sophisticated melodic approach Their latest full length is introduced with The Last Leaf featuring intricate five part harmonies That song originally was a poem that my dad sent me for my birthday says Sam Brouse When I read it I felt that it would lend itself to some type of an a cappella thing I wanted to do an exercise in five part harmony which I d never done Brouse continues I pounded out some chords and recorded them over myself and it stayed like that for over two years There are five of us in the band We each took turns in the studio singing over my original part one by one It was really daunting to see if it was possible and it was the last thing we recorded We did it in one day Adds his brother and band mate Billy Brouse I was the last one on it no pressure there Song titles are intriguingly esoteric Therian was inspired by archeological cave paintings While Anima Mundi translates as spirit of the world Thogmartin notes that the band s upcoming video is a visual representation of the concept It s about this situation we find ourselves in where we are so detached from what life is The Wrong Nostalgia with its pointed line Who sold these assholes on the airwaves is a treatise on the mercenary mercantile mechanisms of broadcasting Says Sam Brouse I didn t start writing that song intending it to be such a vent of frustration I borrowed Anthony s acoustic and electric guitars and was trying to get back into playing And what came out was something from my subconscious of listening to the radio in the 90s and all of that alternative rock and grunge it was very aggressive and I was surprised what came out musically being frustrated that whoever is in charge of putting music on the radio is not taking responsibility for what they are telling people to listen to Not surprisingly the band chooses to be independent A crowd funding campaign for their latest CD was fulfilled in less than 30 days and overfunded by 20 percent Sam Brouse says that they have periodically weighed the benefits and drawbacks to being on a major label Somewhere along the line it hit me that it sounded good to own everything forever and to be our own bosses You read horror stories about what happens to artists adds Thogmartin We want to reach a wider audience but at the end of the day we do have the freedom to play where and when we want and to license wherever we want To get the same kind of deal Kickstarter allowed us would have been an uphill battle with a relinquishing of rights We reached out to our fan base and great people encouraged us

gone three or four hours a day three or four days a week When she heads of for writing sessions her in laws who have just moved to Tennessee from Oregon take care of the baby In a climate where some writers do multiple daily sessions Lee limits herself to one Last year and the year before that I would do double sessions with one 11 a m and another in the evening That gets really old really quickly You have to be creative so you get burned out doing that every day As a songwriter you need to actually live life and be inspired I cut those sessions back so that I would have something to write about instead of just working all of the time Lee has had cuts with Australian country artist Tori Darke U K country band Jess and The Bandits European pop artist DJ Antoine pop star Temara Melek Disney star Katharine McNamara and Disney star Hollywood Records artist Sabrina Carpenter as well as placements on American Idol Modern Family Super Fun Night and Blackish She also makes regular trips to Los Angeles to collaborate with pop songwriters Lee notes that the songwriting climate is very different on the left coast In Nashville songwriting is a job writers go to work and then they turn it off and have families In L A people are writing 24 7 They ll go in the studio at 10 a m and not leave until 3 00 a m It s last minute and spontaneous and it s great I love it for a week at a time I am more about the Nashville way where it s a job In L A it s a lifestyle Nashville is systematic Being flexible as a songwriter Lee says is her greatest strength This isn t meant to sound cocky but I play piano and I consider myself a lyric and melody person I can t do anything on the computer but I can take on any role in the room If someone s strength is melody I will do lyrics I can be alone in the room with the track guy and write both lyrics and melody Lee now 25 has two sisters 17 and 18 Her father a minister of music in a church in Hattiesburg MS is an Elvis impersonator Her family was always supportive of her musical ambitions but Lee did not need much encouragement I was more like Nobody can stop me I will prove you all wrong I didn t care about making my parents happy by going to college My sisters are National Merit Scholars I was the one who spread my wings Now signed to publishing powerhouse Round Hill Music and a full time songwriter with major cuts Lee s ambitions are paying substantial dividends I have a dream she concludes I go for it and I make it happen And I don t believe that anything is impossible Contact Anna Stodart
