  • Bhutan Travel Tips
find Western standards of care in the country The Charm of Bhutan So what about their culture is so beguiling The main thing is that it s truly and uniquely theirs In a world where it often seems as if you can t escape Starbucks McDonalds and other outside influences you can escape them all in Bhutan Television wasn t even legal until 1999 so no one will know who shot J R and with any luck they may not have even heard of the Kardashians That alone is a good reason to go About 10 of the men have gone off to monasteries for many generations and continue to do so today They receive religious education learn trades such as carving and painting and may spend their lives as monks or use the trades they learned to make a living if they leave the order Most become farmers laborers government employees or perhaps business owners or employees The women are hard working whether taking care of the children of the extended family preparing meals weaving or working in the fields They are not isolated or disenfranchised but early marriages and a lack of educational opportunities for both men and women limit the degree to which they can elevate their economic or social status Bhutan is in the Himalayas and has essentially one drivable road in the country Most of the people get around by foot or stay in the villages where they grew up and where their children will also grow up We were fortunate enough to go to a private home for tea The elder daughter who was our hostess said that her family has lived in the same home for 23 generations Bhutan Buddhism and Phalluses It s impossible to extricate the culture from the Buddhism Buddhism as practiced in Bhutan is a pervasive and ancient belief system and seemingly the central theme of life in Bhutan Almost all sites you will see are temples and monasteries The countryside is thick with gently waving prayer flags to honor the dead appease gods or protect the living A most unexpected element of Buddhism in Bhutan is their fondness for choosing words carefully here phallus decor There are more legends than you can imagine but one of my personal favorites was the monk Drukpa Kunley aka The Divine Madman Amazing tales of his exploits abound the majority of which involve his penis and its magical powers It is not uncommon to see homes and businesses with anatomically correct um erections or paintings Across the country you see charming traditional homes with ornate carvings and colorful painting reflecting the skills men have learned in the monasteries Many other homes are extremely basic Only recently has the entire country had access to electricity and running water in rural homes is unlikely To be very candid I was not as awed by the nature in Bhutan as I expected to be The Himalayas are beautiful there were lovely magnolia trees and when

  • In Search of the Northern Lights in Tromso, Norway
and an overnight in a Lavvo or Sami tent in the wilderness Our guides Ken and Ronald who you can see pictured on their website were born and raised in the Sami culture and therefore very knowledgeable on that front Sadly though I wasn t all that impressed with the reindeer sledding The sledding consisted of sitting in two s on wooden sleds while reindeer walked slowly around a circuit I suspect it s much like riding in a horse carriage in Central Park except of course for the sub arctic temperatures Reindeer No red nose Spending the night in a Lavvo was interesting in the way of experiencing an ancient culture For some reason I expected the Lavvo tents would be part of a larger real or simulated Sami village but instead they were just three tents set up on the side of a mountain Both guides left during the night and we were alone out there This activity ended up our least favorite one but we did see the Northern Lights that night which made the rather hefty price tag about 250 00 USD each worth it Our next activity was snowshoeing with Tromso Outdoor We really enjoyed the five hour guided snowshoe Kvaloya hill climb This was my first time using snowshoes but since our guide gave such excellent instructions on putting on the shoes and how to walk in them I felt like a pro in no time Snowshoes and trekking poles are included in the price of the activity The hill climb is not crazy steep and is manageable by most people with at least a moderate level of fitness Once you get to the top there is warm fruit drink and cake waiting for you with a spectacular view that lets you forget how cold the air is Tromso Outdoor also has a store in the town where you can rent skis snowshoes or bikes to embark on your own self guided adventures around the area Incredible view from the top of the hill after the snowshoe hike The final and favorite activity we participated in was a dog sledding adventure with Tour in Lyngenalps Dog sledding is surprisingly fun and exhilarating One person sits in a wooden sled pulled by five dogs and one person stands at the back of the sled to work the brake and help keep the whole thing from tipping over The dogs are extremely strong and energetic The hardest part is applying pressure to the brake to keep them from running off at full speed and toppling the sled and the person in it Our group was made up of ten sleds each pulled by five dogs with the lead sled steered by the guide a rather brusque young lady with what seemed to be a Russian accent Two of our sled dogs The dogs were very well trained although the ones pulling my sled did get themselves tangled up with each other at some point and we
