  • Tips for Visiting Orta San Giulio, Italy
yellow church that sits at the top of the cobblestone path But our journey uphill wasn t over We trekked up another steep but paved lane to the beginning of the Sacro Monte di Orta where a park like setting plays host to twenty chapels dedicated to the life of St Francis of Assisi The Sacro Monte was declared an Italian national park or Riserva in 1980 and added to the World Heritage List in 2003 Built over a period of 200 years starting in the late 1500 s the chapels reflect a variety of architectural styles beginning with Renaissance influences then moving on to Baroque and Rocco The scenes housed inside were intended to teach illiterate peasants who couldn t understand the Latin sermons they heard at mass the virtues of religion through the life of St Francis of Assisi Chapel scene at Sacro Monte di Orta The winding paths through a forested hillside bordered by hedges provide a birds eye view of tiny Isola San Giulio St Julius s Island in the middle of Lake Orta But it s the chapels that we ve come to see Inside the stone buildings frescoes adorn the ceilings while terra cotta figures seem to pop out from paintings giving a three dimensional feel to the scenes depicting the life of St Francis of Assisi Travelers to Orta could spend an entire day roaming the grounds while appreciating the artwork in the chapels After walking back down the hill Claudio chose the outdoor cafe of Restorante ai deu Santi Restaurant of the two saints situated on the Piazza Motta for lunch Italian style A fizzy Barbarino wine and a fine view of Lake Orta accompanied the grilled porcine polenta And of course a chocolaty desert followed by a cappuccino that quickly marked us as tourists Italians do not dring cappuccino after 10 a m completed the meal Later we boarded a motorboat for the brief ride to the island in the middle of the lake Legend has it that San Giulio didn t need a boat to cross to the island He reportedly repelled a serpent before walking across the lake on his cloak to establish the basilica in 390 A D Inside the Basilica of San Giulio Elena put her art historian degree to work explaining the significance of the furnishings including an enormous pulpit carved from dark green serpentine mined from a nearby quarry History was almost palpable when we entered the musty smelling crypt where the saint s bones reside Isola San Giulio Back outside we followed the path of silence that encircles Isola San Giulio In the center of the island a convent cloisters Benedictine nuns who have taken vows of silence Iron grates provide glimpses into their secluded gardens and way of life Motoring back across the lake to Orta San Giulio views of pale mansions crowding the shoreline sparked my imagination Who lived there What must it be like to live in this small Italian village

  • Exploring the French Medieval Village of Perouges
out of their way to make sure we enjoyed the experience we were having instead Viking added a visit to this medieval walled city and we were delighted with the addition The narrow streets of Perouges make for great strolling Perouges is a tiny village northeast of Lyon which is perched on a small hill overlooking the plain of the Ain River and has quite a lovely view of the surrounding area Probably founded in the early 1100 s by a Gallic colony the town has always been inhabited by craftsmen mainly farmers linen weavers and wine makers The town officially became French in 1601 and the textile industry boomed until the early 19 th century when roads and railroads were re routed which bypassed the town and the population dropped from well over 1 000 to 90 In the early 1900 s the town was restored to its medieval appearance houses and other residences were saved and it became a popular tourist destination Because of this authentic medieval appearance the town is often used in movie sets We had already been to several French towns by the time we made it to Perouges but from the moment we saw the entrance gate we knew this place was totally unique After strolling through the gate we walked along the cobblestoned lanes to see centuries old medieval homes lining the narrow lanes Our guide pointed out the difference between the homes that had been built and owned by linen merchants and those of wine makers The wine making homes all had lower levels to store wine and were easy to pick out We were surprised when a door to an ancient and charming home opened and we could peer in to see modern furnishings complete with a large flat screen television She also explained the sealed up windows and doors on many of the homes ghosts were expected to leave via those exits then they were sealed up so they couldn t return And stay out you ghosts Although Perouges only has about 100 inhabitants there are numerous artisans with shops as well as several restaurants and hotels in the town and the surrounding areas From handmade paper to a fresh bakery you can purchase several items to take home Guided tours of the town are a good idea to help you understand the history of the area After our tour we ended up in a large central square where there are several small shops restaurants with the requisite open air dining so popular in France and a hotel the Hostellerie du Vieux Perouges one of the oldest inns in France which would be a wonderful place to stay when visiting We were tired after navigating the narrow cobblestone lanes so our group divided each finding shady comfortable seating at one of the restaurants where we all ordered cool drinks and Mia our Viking River Cruises program director brought us all a very special treat Galette Perugienne a la Crème Galette

  • Visit Schwerin, Germany, on a walking tour
era Cathedral dominates the skyline Active travelers will want to climb the 220 steps of the cathedral s bell tower for a birds eye view of the city A cross timbered house on a street in Schwerin Although World War II spared Schwerin s historic architecture only a few half timbered buildings from the city s earliest times remain due to fires in the 16 th and 17 th centuries You ll find these charming buildings in the Schelfstadt district of the old town Schwerin Castle But it s the Schwerin Palace that steals the show of this walking tour Built over 1 000 years ago as a Slavic fortress on an island in the Schwerin See lake the buildings eventually morphed into a castle worthy of Cinderella The former home of the Dukes of Mecklenburg the palace currently houses the State Parliament of Mecklenburg Vorpommem as well as a 28 room Palace Museum that s worth a visit English descriptions are included on exhibits don t miss the throne room The gardens overlooking the lake are particularly lovely with canals fountains sculptures and flowerbeds that have been restored through the use of historical records The Orangerie looks out onto a portion of the palace garden Alter Garten Square unofficially known as the Place of Good Hope for the 1989 demonstrations held there sits across from Schwerin Palace It houses the State Museum and State Theater buildings Opera lovers should plan their visit for the Open Air Opera Festival Schlossfestspiel that runs from mid June to mid July So much deliciousness at Cafe Prag Which one pastry should I choose Of course no walk would be complete without stopping for a bit of people watching accompanied by coffee and pastries in a local coffee shop At Café Prag I lingered
