  • Cedar Grove on Avalanche Lake Trail in Glacier National Park
a mile or so by the roaring waters of Avalanche Creek the trail turns inland and suddenly you re in a cedar grove of old growth trees actually you ve been in the forest the entire time But the busy trail seems quieter here Light filters through the thick stand of cedar trees landing on patches of moss on a mostly level forest floor It s as if nature is saying come sit in this spot and pay attention to what s happening here If you re willing to stop your progress toward Avalanche Lake for just a bit you ll watch chipmunks scampering in and out of downed limbs while birds sing as they flit about from branch to branch Close your eyes take in a deep breath and just be in the cool peaceful forest Although it s tempting to hurry on to the prime reason for hiking this Montana trail Avalanche Lake and there are certainly more photos to be taken that offer better scenery you ll be happy for the moments you stopped in this curve of the trail on one of the most popular hikes in Glacier National Park Have you hiked the Avalanche Lake trail Did you stop to enjoy the cedar grove or did you rush on by to reach the lake Join the conversation at the My Itchy Travel Feet page on Facebook or send us an email to ask a question or share your experience Disclosure Road Scholar provided this travel experience but the opinions are my own You may also like to read Discover Waterton Lakes with the Trail Riders of the Canadian Rockies Sunrise on Maui s Haleakala National Park Seven Off the Beaten Path National Parks to Avoid the Crowds Montreal City Guide On Our Own in Cartagena
