  • 5 Boomer Travel Tips for Visiting Paris Off-the-Beaten-Path
the city you might want to look a little further afield Here are five of the best off the beaten path experiences Paris has to offer Bon appétit 1 Parc des Buttes Chaumont If you re in need of a break from the sights and sounds of the inner city head to Parc des Buttes Chaumont for a brief rest Situated at the top of a hill in the 19th arondissement this park presents a dramatic landscape of sky scraping cliffs and towering trees It s hard to believe that Parc des Buttes Chaumont was literally built from the rubble of a disused quarry Sit by the beautiful lakeside and enjoy a midday picnic before wandering over to watch the cascading waterfall 2 Claude Monet s Gardens If you ve had enough of exploring the city center venture a little further afield to explore the house and grounds of the famous French artist Claude Monet A 45 minute train journey takes you to the town of Vernon where you can either catch a taxi to Giverny or take the shuttle bus which runs from spring to autumn If you re feeling up to it and you ve got a good map in hand consider walking to the house Keep in mind that it takes around an hour After arriving at the gardens don t miss the walk across the Japanese bridge which Monet famously depicted in his Water Lily Pond painting 3 Pâtisserie Sadaharu AOKI France is famous for its delicious macaroons and no trip to Paris would be complete without a taste of these sweet treats If you re watching your weight head to the quirky Japanese French Pâtisserie Sadaharu AOKI to enjoy some mouth watering macaroons without the hefty calorie content For something a little out of the ordinary buy a bag of green tea macaroons which are made from authentic Japanese green tea and cannot be found anywhere else in the city 4 The Eiffel Tower at Night Paris most famous landmark is a hot spot for tourists during the day For boomer travelers who don t want to get caught up in the crowds wait until the evening to see this iconic tower shine From mid June to late August the Eiffel Tower is open until midnight so it makes for the perfect après dinner entertainment A lift to the top costs around 18 but if you re not willing to splash the cash you can always wander over to the Palais de Chaillot to see the tower in all its illuminated glory 5 Jardin du Luxembourg Jardin du Luxembourg is the perfect place to enjoy an afternoon stroll in the heart of the city The park presents around 55 acres of wonderfully well kept gardens and beautiful statues depicting both Greek goddesses and Parisian saints Sit on one of the many lawns and watch the local chess players battle it out or wander over to the Northern end of the park to see the magnificent

free laundry service Depending on the lodge guests don t even change from their safari clothes before dinner Early mornings and late nights The three hour game drives begin at 5 or 5 30 am and then again at 4 00 pm In between guests eat rest and eat some more B umpy rides Land Rovers drive along dirt roads before venturing on rocky paths or even off road When your ranger gets that call about an animal sighting hold on tight as the vehicle roars through the bush so that you don t miss viewing a lion kill Photographer s paradise Be prepared to click hundreds of photos so bring a camera with a good zoom lens and plenty of memory cards Down time When the ranger finds an animal sighting he stops the vehicle You might spend 45 minutes watching an elephant herd or leopards mating on a rock Patience is required Rules Our vehicle stopped within ten feet of a sleeping lion pride We watched quietly as they woke up and then walked next to the Land Rover to start their nightly hunt for food Following our ranger s instructions to keep seated quiet and still was imperative to our safety Also at night we were accompanied to and from the dining room by a guide wielding a flashlight Knowledgeable rangers and trackers Besides teaching you about animal behavior rangers lecture on insects snakes plants and trees Stops for refreshments On morning drives the ranger and tracker stop to serve coffee with or without amarula and muffins In the afternoons at sundowners you ll enjoy appetizers with alcoholic or non alcoholic beverages Warm welcome When guests return to the lodge from game drives they re greeted with cool towels juice in the mornings and signature drinks in

  • Dubrovnik and Split Hiking Guide
many café s that line the street and stop for a bit and sit on one of the benches looking out to sea Then continue along the boardwalk keeping the sea on your left The promenade will curve around to the left and you ll pass the Villa Matejuska an historical stone hotel Follow Trumbiceva Obala as it turns again On your right you will see a small sign that says Marjan and some stone stairs Climb the stairs heading toward The Hotel Garden Apartments and keep climbing It will seem as if you are on private property but you re not just keep going You will eventually end up in a lovely green space with wide paths trees and the most stunning views of the city Dubrovnik Clay roofs from the Dubrovnik city walls The first thing to do in Dubrovnik is to pay 70 Kuna about 10 00 USD and walk along the City Walls that surround the Old Town Built throughout history to protect the city the walls run uninterrupted for 1 940 meters and are still functional today From the walls you can see some of the damage to the clay roofs that still remains after the bombings in 1990s The walls offer views of the always beautiful Adriatic Sea and of the hilltop behind the city You can see over the whole city as well and are able to get a good sense of where everything is I spent hours walking the walls exploring every nook taking photographs and staring out to sea View of the Adriatic from the walls of Dubrovnik The next best thing to do in Dubrovnik is to go and visit the fort that sits on top of the hill behind the city This fort was used to defend Dubrovnik during the bombings and wars in the 90s Most people take the cable car up The cable car is north of the Old Town Take Buza Street and keep climbing toward the fire station Once at the fire station cross the street to your right and keep going straight On the way up to the fort The alternative to the cable car is to hike up which is what I did The trailhead is a bit tricky to find I was staying outside the Old Town and started from there I followed Spitski Put road and turned right on Vladimir Nazora Its not very picturesque along this route but just stay on the shoulder and keep walking until you get to Kamenarska a stair street Follow it up take a right on Gornji Kono then a left on N Kullsiica This will dead end into a large busy road Drzavna Cesta D 8 You should see a bus stop on the other side of the road Carefully cross the road being very mindful of fast moving cars that will not likely slow down for you Behind the bus stop you will see a trail heading off into the woods Follow this
