I couldn t see over the steering wheel This year s theme at the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show is She s a Beauty How would you interpret the theme when it comes to classic cars She s a Beauty for us it isn t just about being a fantastic looking car its all about characteristics history and those little nuances that each individual classic has In our experience no two classic cars are the same and that s what we love about them We believe the Austin 7 Special is a beauty she isn t the biggest or the fastest but you can coax her into a good pace she is small and nimble which makes her so much fun to drive What s your favourite classic Seren that I have driven Alpha Romeo Guiletta Spyder Veloce but my favourite classic car is the Jaguar XK140 but I wouldn t want to rally it Elise I absolutely love MGAs I think they just look so stylish and even though it is not the most powerful it is great fun to drive What element of classic motoring do you enjoy the most All of it When you re driving a classic you get to feel the car the road and even the weather It becomes an art in itself Through the rallying we ve been able to experience roads and driving conditions that we wouldn t have even considered driving on or through on a day to day basis On top of that the classic car community has to be one of the best in the world it doesn t matter where in the country we go to take part in a rally or event you always know some of the competitors and organisers it s become an extended family for us You are the UK s youngest historic rallying team how and why did you get started Having a love for Motorsport it all started off with us marshaling on classic car events we very quickly noticed that there were very few women competitors and we asked why that was The answer we received was that it was too difficult for women now they may have been joking but that was all we needed to hear We decided we were going to do one event to show everyone that women could compete against the men we raised the entry fee hired a Mini Cooper S from HERO and decided to tackle Le Jog Europe toughest classic car endurance rally raising money for The Pink Ribbon Foundation in the process Having marshaled for a few years we thought we knew exactly what we were doing we couldn t have been more wrong We did finish that first event but unfortunately we had a few breakdowns along the way which meant we never really knew how competitive or not competitive we had been We had been bitten by the bug as they say and we haven t looked back since How

Show is She s a Beauty How would you interpret the theme when it comes to classic cars When I was seven years old we had a family holiday in the South of France Apart from hopping on planes and trains the most exciting part of the journey for me was sitting in the back of a dark green Mini Countryman driving through France to Cannes I remember my mother insisted on packing numerous packets and tins of food in the rear side compartments of the doors She was a little Gem never broke down and never over heated What s your favourite classic Without doubt the E Type Jaguar still renowned throughout the world and as Enzo Ferrari said the most beautiful car in the world but with one fault no Ferrari badge In my opinion its sleek elegant lines and impressive performance make it a timeless beauty What element of classic motoring do you enjoy the most Classic motoring conjures up images of touring the continent in a 1950 s 60 s British sports car namely an Austin Healey Freedom Adventure and Fun You conduct talks at Beaulieu Motor Museum on Woman in Motoring Which woman in motoring inspires you the most Dorothy Levitt the first woman to receive international recognition and who embraced every opportunity that came her way She was an attractive intelligent woman who shocked British society by her various exploits She was a wonderful inspiration to other women constantly encouraging them to take up motoring by writing articles and as the author of her book The Woman and the Car which was published in 1909 Interestingly a great deal of what Dorothy wrote about is still very relevant today Lots of people would be very jealous of getting to work in a classic car
