    Nick Cave maybe have been born in Melbourne in the 1950s but he has always had the sensibility of a Texan preacher s son drawing heavily on rich gothic and biblical imagery in his lyrics music novels and films Nick Cave s multifarious career started in Australia with gothic rock group The Birthday Party a favourite of legendary DJ John Peel but less so with the record buying public When the Birthday Party split up Cave went on to form The Bad Seeds a multinational band that first performed live in 1984 and continues to record and tour 20 years on recording albums like From Her to Eternity Murder Ballads and Let Love In In 2006 Cave formed another band Grinderman He has also published two novels And The Ass Saw The Angel in 1989 and The Death of Bunny Munro in 2009 and written the screenplay for the film The Proposition The list of Nick Cave s collaborators is as eclectic as it is long duets with Kylie Minogue PJ Harvey and Johnny Cash collaborations with Shane McGowan and Marianne Faithfull and writing soundtracks for film directors including Wim Wenders and John Hillcoat Cave s Meltdown in 1999 was

    archive of unique Meltdown moments Twitter follow meltdownfest Sorry there is a problem with twitter and we could not load the tweets Meltdown 2013 is supported by Côtes du Rhône Wines It s hard to overstate the late John Peel s influence on popular music in the United Kingdom and the DJ is much missed years after his untimely death Born in Liverpool Peel travelled extensively in the United States during the 1960s before getting his first radio job working for WRR Radio in Dallas He returned to England in 1967 working first in pirate radio before joining the new pop music station BBC Radio 1 Throughout the 1970s he brought reggae punk and prog rock to the masses and is credited with jumpstarting the careers of artists like David Bowie The Fall The Undertones and the White Stripes among countless others His legacy lives on in the vast archive of live recordings under the Peel Sessions featuring everyone from AC DC to Benjamin Zephaniah and including hundreds of young musicians who would never forget his kindness and encouragement As well as his love of pop music John Peel became one of the country s most beloved broadcasters hosting Radio

    load the tweets Meltdown 2013 is supported by Côtes du Rhône Wines Laurie Anderson is as far from the archetypal popstar as you can imagine yet she is the woman behind the hit single O Superman which was a number two hit here in the UK in 1981 Describing Anderson even in a world of slash careers is not a short process singer violinist percussionist keyboard player sculptor performance artist inventor film director and even for one of her performance pieces an ice skater Born in Illinois in 1947 Anderson learned the violin growing up but trained in art history and then as a sculptor initially becoming a teacher and illustrator before starting out in performance art in the 1970s but never restrained by labels or committing to one art form She brings to her music wit intelligence and seemingly fearless risk taking ensuring that she is always intriguing and unpredictable This is reflected in the eclectic list pf people sh has collaborated including Philip Glass Brian Eno Jean Michel Jarre Peter Gabriel and Ryuichi Sakamoto Violin featured extensively in Anderson s Meltdown line up with Gidon Kremer and his Tango Group performing an homage to the great Argentine composer

    with many of the Meltdown directors who have followed him he has proven himself willing to venture out of his comfort zone and continually push boundaries throughout his career Born Declan MacManus Costello started his first band in 1971 He released his debut album My Aim Is True in 1977 just as punk rock was going mainstream Hit single Pump It Up followed in 1978 heralding a decade of chart success for the musician including 1989 s Veronica co written with Paul McCartney He always challenged his audience however with recordings of country and western covers and an acoustic album His collaborations vary from the finest classical musicians including Swedish mezzo soprano Anne Sofie von Otter and the Brodsky Quartet to Burt Bacharach the godfather of pop song writing and everything in between The Pogues members of Elvis Presley s band and country singer George Jones to name but a few Elvis Costello s varied tastes were reflected in his Meltdown line up which saw the likes of Blondie s Deborah Harry on the same festival bill as jazz guitarist Brill Frisell keyboardist Steve Nieve the Brodsky Quartet the London Sinfonietta six classes of pupils from South London schools and
