    Nations and American slaves First Nations Amy Klassen administrator for the Niagara Historical Society Museum tells me that the museum has a permanent exhibit on the history of Niagara s First Nations From that I learned that the first settlers after the Ice Age some 11 000 years ago were nomadic native hunters and gatherers who eventually began to cultivate crops such as Indian corn beans and squash Over the centuries distinctive nations emerged including the Neutral Nation which was eventually overcome by the Iroquois The first documented European to connect with the Neutral Nation was Etienne Brulé sent there by Samuel de Champlain around 1615 Other nations that passed through the area included the Iroquois Haudenausaunee Huron Seneca and Mississauga Today the Niagara Regional Native Centre at 382 Airport Road in Niagara on the Lake holds regular social and cultural events such as biweekly fish frys and occasional potluck dinners that are open to all For updates follow the Centre on Facebook Visitors to Niagara on the Lake can enjoy First Nations cultural events throughout the year Black history In the 19 th century hundreds of freedom seeking slaves crossed into Canada through the Underground Railway in the Niagara area Niagara on the Lake was one stop on that railway as well as the place where the Anti Slavery Act was signed by John Graves Simcoe on July 9 1793 220 years ago This year also marks the 100 th anniversary of Harriet Tubman s death Harriet brought dozens of slaves to freedom across the border making St Catharines the centre of her anti slavery activities in the mid 1850s I recently met Lezlie Harper Wells a descendant of a fugitive slave from Kentucky who regaled me with stories about Black history the Underground Railway and the tours she
