s words to understand that typography is a strict environment We talked about signals again Things that emphasize an element of text How many do you need to get the job done Less is always more it is easy to over signal something posted at 11 36 AM in big ideas techniques typography comments 0 trackback 0 link Wednesday July 16 2003 Gestures We talked a lot today about composition the placement of things on a page Gestures making broad strokes on a blank page can help explore the feeling you are trying to capture in type and the placement of your text Is the movement organic Mechanical Loose Tight etc And don t put everything center Centering is easy Finding how far off center you can go how far towards the edges is more interesting Don t be afraid of the edges But be careful of the ragged right edge of text Make sure the edges aren t too ragged You don t want to draw too much attention to that edge for the reader When designing don t throw away your early ideas They might be cliche but they might also be the most honest response to the problem An underlying grid structure can help organize your page and can also help build variety within consistant pages It s sometimes hard to know when you are done with a project The end is often simply determined by external forces ie a deadline During the second half of class we looked at the work of Bradbury Thompson an American graphic designer who helped give definition to graphic design in the US in the second half of the 20th century His main contribution was the integration of type and image in advertising and in his Inspirations projects for paper manufacturer Westvaco posted at 07 53 PM in big ideas design 101 projects techniques typography comments 0 trackback 0 link Tuesday July 15 2003 Communication v Design I m apparently having the same trouble I had during Photography emphasizing Design over Communication In my first assignment pdf 96k I spent a lot of time some 6 hours playing with the composition of each variation But what I missed was the communication of the message Which is pretty stupid considering the first line of the text is A great square has no corners You d think in six hours of staring at and typing the same message some of it would have sunk in Hopefully my refinement pdf 30k is better We did talk a lot about form today in class about how the overall shape and form of the page prepares the reader for the content therein Symmetry as it turns out is boring Old skool Asymmetry is more interesting more dynamic Asymmetrical text might be more difficult to comprehend but it is ok to make the reader work a little bit as long as it isn t too much You have to know you audience and your content to know

Despite my complaining I did learn a lot this week It was just painful learning We finished up our exhibit drawings today adding in detail and figures I ll post some pictures later this weekend when I have more than a minute to put them up Next week Field trip to Fallingwater 3D and 2D objects posted at 12 16 PM in classes visualization comments 0 trackback 0 link Thursday July 24 2003 Perspective We spent all of class working on perspective creating on a large sheets of paper 10 x12 x10 rooms in groups of three If I sound nonplussed it s because I am Obviously perspective is important in drawing but the stated purpose of this week was to enhance our ability to communicate ideas effectively on paper This type of work isn t achieving that goal for me I and I think many of my classmates as well would probably have preferred to work on basic sketching techniques effective ways of showing drawings and text We did a little of that yesterday making thumbnails but the thumbnails were so detailed I had to make thumbnails for my thumbnails The saving grace of this week has been learning After Effects Wow what a sweet program this is You re able to do some really cool stuff with very little effort My own very little effort 8mb Quicktime movie I d love to buy it but at 299 even with my student discount it s just not in the budget right now But its a cool alternative to Flash for animation locally anyway the file sizes are pretty huge The whole camera effect of being able to move not the objects on the screen but the camera viewing them is pure genius posted at 08 12 PM in design 101 software visualization comments 0 trackback 0 link Wednesday July 23 2003 Grids and Letterforms Half of today s class was spent drawing by hand of course a I m guessing 72pt New Baskerville letter either E or S and turning into double its size Not easy to make it look right The trick is to break the letter up into a grid and draw it piece by piece The second half of class was spent deconstructing a magazine page and turning it into a thumbnail in order to see the underlying grid I ve been skipping out on software bootcamp this week because it was a program I know Photoshop but today they re teaching After Effects so I m heading back in to get a taste of that posted at 12 37 PM in visualization comments 0 trackback 0 link Tuesday July 22 2003 A Transparent Window into my nightmare Today we were told that non Asian peoples think of paper as a transparent window to the world behind it Then talked more about perspective Things farther away are usually higher on the screen and smaller Then we spent three hours drawing cubes and ellipses Seriously It s

was only half aware of it at the time last August at a backyard barbecue in Somerville MA during DIS when Chad Thornton introduced me to Peter Merholtz who offhandedly asked me when I was graduating After another meeting with Peter in January a long talk with CEO Janice Fraser at the IA Summit in March and finally a day of interviews two weeks ago with most of the rest of the team I was offered and accepted a job as a senior interaction designer at Adaptive Path I start about a month after I graduate Although AP is a great company with some amazing opportunities and an impressive set of benefits and perks I did agonize over the decision I met with some very impressive companies and was even offered a job at some of them But in the end you have make your best guess based on the offers you get and hope it works out In some ways it s easier to design strategies for companies than for your own life It s tough to figure out where you want to go and how to get there You need well an adaptive path to find your way Posted by Dan at 10 45 PM Comments 2 TrackBack April 14 2005 T Minus One Month Only one month left So much left to do so many loose ends to wrap up Things are starting to fall into place for after I graduate but that puzzle isn t fully resolved yet by any means The clock ticks and days get marked off on the calendar one by one Posted by Dan at 12 55 PM Comments 0 TrackBack April 3 2005 Frequent Fliers My classmates and I are scattered across the country these days with job interviews and a handful of people presenting at CHI The list of companies that people are talking to is impressive a partial Who s Who of Interaction Design Adaptive Path Agnew Moyer Smith Apple Cooper Google IDEO Microsoft Motorola Razorfish Samsung Sapient Smart Design and Yahoo I wish us all luck Posted by Dan at 11 59 AM Comments 0 TrackBack February 27 2005 First Picked Elizabeth has accepted a job as a designer at Google She s the first one of us to accept an offer Congrats to her Posted by Dan at 11 24 AM Comments 0 TrackBack February 26 2005 Stress In the last week I lost my programmer for my thesis project leaving me in the lurch with a half finished demo madly scrambled to find a replacement which I think I might have done with some help from Jeff searched for money to pay said programmer which may involve cashing in some savings bonds I ve had for 35 years Seriously had major issues re printing my music map of Amazon got a tattoo presented our group model for conceptual models class discovered a cavity in a tooth that I need to deal with ASAP got yet another

and prejudices But for the purpose of analysis and design you have to treat open systems as closed It s important to remember that however broad system theory seems to be it remains in the context of resource usage individuals and groups except as resources play little part in systems thinking It s a distinct type of thinking about organizations rooted in materials However systems thinking and chaos theory are growing in importance to Design But although system theory has significance Dick Buchanan says it is a stretch of imagination to see how some of it applies to the problems designers face It takes us out of the things we experience day to day and gives a high level view of the situation sometimes too high level It can be too big it s often more helpful to find and understand the pathways through the system on a human scale because you can easier design for those Go to the human experience and let design thinking restructure the system as a whole Posted by Dan at 5 17 PM Comments 0 TrackBack January 16 2005 The History of Design Dick Buchanan There are two great currents of design thinking that come out of the ancient world Making Stuff Fabricating Things Comes from crafts and more formalized activities such as architecture and engineering These became fragmented during the Industrial Revolution Organizing People How you gather and manage groups of people into organizations An organization is defined as a group of people seeking a common goal through a structure of divided and coordinated activities a form supported by various resources artifacts tools rooms information etc From these two great currents emerged Three Great Design Practices Engineering The creation of roads sewage systems aqueducts and other acts of civil engineering It also has a lot to do with moving troops long distances and over obstacles Management Managers have uncanny connections to designers both seek to turn situations that are not so good into something better Design Proper The great proliferation of design types defined by what is made fashion design interaction design industrial design etc Each type of practice is fragmented but all three are starting to coalesce In engineering natural science physics math chemistry and recently biology define its foundation Management has coalesced around the social and behavioral sciences sociology psychology and economic The foundation of design proper is art and has been for centuries Design firms are no longer finding their work confined to producing one type of product Recent design practice calls for people who can more and more cross over traditional design disciplines and even cross into the other two practices engineering and management As Clement Mok says in the Time for Change article maybe we should rethink the fragmentation of design itself Instead of defining ourselves by what we make think instead about the problems we solve It s not about the medium we work in Dick suggests we reorganize design into The Four Orders of Design Communication
