  • On An Overgrown Path: Rostropovich – reaching out for the music
that he leaves such a fine recorded legacy as a cellist He went on to achieve much as a conductor but the electricity he radiated from the podium was difficult to transfer to recordings I can remember discussions at EMI as to whether his 1970s Tchaikovsky Symphony cycle should be remastered as the pressings somehow lacked the frisson of the actual performances In the later years his energy was occasionally misplaced and his fee as a conductor became an obstacles with some promoters restricting his appearances at important series such as the BBC Promenade Concerts The last time I saw him was in London several years ago with the Lithuanian Ballet when he conducted a staged performance of Prokofiev s Romeo and Juliet that ended with a bizarre mis en scene with Rostropovich joining the dead lovers on stage in the final bars Mstislav Rostropovich will be remembered as a genius with the cello and baton as a champion of human rights as a consummate ambassador for music and above all for his love for humanity He truly reached out and was burnt by the music let us celebrate that today Slava s Russian roots informed everything he did now read about Western takes on Russian music Any copyrighted material on these pages is included for fair use for the purpose of study review or critical analysis only and will be removed at the request of copyright owner s Report broken links missing images and other errors to overgrownpath at hotmail dot co dot uk Posted by Pliable at Friday April 27 2007 Email This BlogThis Share to Twitter Share to Facebook Share to Pinterest Labels benjamin britten classical music emi mstislav rostropovich peter andry walter legge 2 comments Pliable said Nice tribute by Martin Kettle on the Guardian website with a second line link to On An Overgrown Path 4 24 pm Valerie said Thanks so much for sharing your memories of Slava He was truly a great inspiration as both an amazing cellist and a courageous human being 2 56 am Post a Comment Newer Post Older Post Home Subscribe to Post Comments Atom Chance headlines Loading Search On An Overgrown Path Loading Blog Archive 2016 19 February 5 January 14 2015 196 December 21 November 9 October 23 September 24 August 13 July 25 June 12 May 12 April 17 March 3 February 21 January 16 2014 211 December 13 November 23 October 13 September 19 August 17 July 10 June 21 May 27 April 15 March 2 February 23 January 28 2013 257 December 21 November 17 October 31 September 8 August 35 July 24 June 24 May 8 April 31 March 8 February 24 January 26 2012 276 December 22 November 25 October 23 September 12 August 20 July 27 June 27 May 7 April 32 March 27 February 24 January 30 2011 299 December 22 November 21 October 42 September 12 August 24 July 38 June 29 May 5 April 34 March 9 February

promenade concerts michael ball nicholas kenyon 2 comments kyle said I don t see much wrong with those two concerts I take it that you are concerned that the administrators are dumbing down the festival I ll confess that if I was in London this summer I wouldn t even consider going to those concerts being lured by more enticing programs I ll be stuck in a cultural backwater of Florida though 9 03 pm petemaskreplica said I ve nothing against either of these concerts even though they re not my thing It s certainly not unprecedented to have concerts of film music or show tunes at the Proms I m more surprised that people don t seem to have picked up on the fact that they ve programmed Beethoven 9 twice which really does seem to be a colossal waste of time and a failure of imagination 10 32 am Post a Comment Newer Post Older Post Home Subscribe to Post Comments Atom Chance headlines Loading Search On An Overgrown Path Loading Blog Archive 2016 19 February 5 January 14 2015 196 December 21 November 9 October 23 September 24 August 13 July 25 June 12 May 12 April 17 March 3 February 21 January 16 2014 211 December 13 November 23 October 13 September 19 August 17 July 10 June 21 May 27 April 15 March 2 February 23 January 28 2013 257 December 21 November 17 October 31 September 8 August 35 July 24 June 24 May 8 April 31 March 8 February 24 January 26 2012 276 December 22 November 25 October 23 September 12 August 20 July 27 June 27 May 7 April 32 March 27 February 24 January 30 2011 299 December 22 November 21 October 42 September 12 August 24 July 38 June 29 May 5 April 34 March 9 February 33 January 30 2010 281 December 37 November 20 October 36 September 7 August 37 July 27 May 17 April 33 March 12 February 26 January 29 2009 367 December 22 November 23 October 33 September 7 August 35 July 30 May 42 April 39 March 41 February 47 January 48 2008 476 December 38 November 40 October 57 September 39 August 36 July 42 June 9 May 54 April 41 March 44 February 30 January 46 2007 572 December 43 November 65 October 55 September 11 August 46 July 57 June 48 May 52 April 52 Theremin album back from grateful dead Nobody s perfect Rostropovich reaching out for the music Joy of Music a celebration of diversity Pity the poor BBC presenter Mahler s message for German parliament Having a ball at the 2007 BBC Proms Music blogging from Palestine Berlin Philharmonic s first Black conductor Nice one BBC Radio 3 Classical music revolutionary elitist popular Youthful optimism will triumph When Sarkozy comes marching in On Quoting Shakespeare When will they ever learn Busking in the limelight CD sales can only go up New music for an ancient liturgy How

a triumph of youthful optimism over deadly nihilism Our thoughts have been with America this week Last night we were at a performance in Norwich Cathedral of that life affirming work Haydn s Creation And now playing on a wonderful spring morning that the victims in Virginia will never see is a hymn to the triumph of youthful optimism over nihilism Bernstein s 1956 comic operetta Candide sums up the strange logic of American society and politics with its influences ranging from Offenbach to Gershwin and use of Voltaire to denounce McCarthyism The finale Make our garden grow also say it all London is to get a new production of Candide I just hope the music survives the staging My header photo is of Bernstein s pupil Marin Alsop conducting the New York Philharmonic s semi staged production watch a video excerpt here Now read more on that strange logic here Any copyrighted material on these pages is included as fair use for the purpose of study review or critical analysis only and will be removed at the request of copyright owner s Report broken links missing images and other errors to overgrownpath at hotmail dot co dot uk Posted by Pliable at Sunday April 22 2007 Email This BlogThis Share to Twitter Share to Facebook Share to Pinterest Labels candide cho seung hui leonard bernstein mccarthyism nbc new york philharmonic virginia tech university voltaire No comments Post a Comment Newer Post Older Post Home Subscribe to Post Comments Atom Chance headlines Loading Search On An Overgrown Path Loading Blog Archive 2016 19 February 5 January 14 2015 196 December 21 November 9 October 23 September 24 August 13 July 25 June 12 May 12 April 17 March 3 February 21 January 16 2014 211 December 13 November 23 October 13 September 19 August 17 July 10 June 21 May 27 April 15 March 2 February 23 January 28 2013 257 December 21 November 17 October 31 September 8 August 35 July 24 June 24 May 8 April 31 March 8 February 24 January 26 2012 276 December 22 November 25 October 23 September 12 August 20 July 27 June 27 May 7 April 32 March 27 February 24 January 30 2011 299 December 22 November 21 October 42 September 12 August 24 July 38 June 29 May 5 April 34 March 9 February 33 January 30 2010 281 December 37 November 20 October 36 September 7 August 37 July 27 May 17 April 33 March 12 February 26 January 29 2009 367 December 22 November 23 October 33 September 7 August 35 July 30 May 42 April 39 March 41 February 47 January 48 2008 476 December 38 November 40 October 57 September 39 August 36 July 42 June 9 May 54 April 41 March 44 February 30 January 46 2007 572 December 43 November 65 October 55 September 11 August 46 July 57 June 48 May 52 April 52 Theremin album back from grateful dead Nobody s perfect
