    the end Shot on my Canon C300 and Canon cinema prime lenses www shunkfilms co uk Posted in Film Making Tags Bristol comedy filming short short film Toast short mocumentary on bread addiction 15 May 14 by obenson A small team calling ourselves The Loafers created this three minute comedy mocumentary for the Glastonbury Film Challenge 2014 We shot it over a weekend edited it in a day and we won Best Film Best Script and the People s Choice The script is by Rachel Whitelock who also directed I was DoP and provided all the camera lights and audio gear We shot it in Wells and Bristol on my Canon C300 Posted in Film Making Tags comedy film short film Daisy Chapman The Hangman s Waltz 21 Nov 13 by obenson Daisy Chapman is a Bristol based singer songwriter who I have had the pleasure of working with a few times now including filming her album launch at the Bristol Folk House about a year ago Daisy wanted someone to make a short silent film to accompany an instrumental track on that album called The Hangman s Waltz and I jumped at it I love the dark melancholy nature of her songs and I easily came up with lots of ideas for a short film especially in collaboration with a friend of mine who designs costumes Lauren Ayres It took a while to get the right group of people together to make this but a few weeks ago we started filming at the wonderful Same Same But Different café restaurant in Bath I had been going there for lunch for some time liked it s style and position on Bartlett Street and the manager was happy for me to film there Naturally I treated my actors and crew to lunch there once we d finished filming We had to do a second days filming there because of bad weather and illness but that worked to our advantage giving a more definite change in look light to complement the shifting mood in the story Last Saturday we finished with a couple hours filming at a small wood in Wiltshire shooting right up until the light had gone at 4 30pm the last shot in the film was captured at f 1 2 and 6400 ISO Thank goodness for my C300 which works well in low light there is definitely noise in those last shots but I left it in because I felt it worked well with the mood One aspect I specifically wanted to work on was using lens choice shooting angle to help tell the story Of course reality got in the way of my careful plans so some of it specifically the shots inside the café had to be shot with whichever lens worked in the space available And a couple of shots didn t work the way I had seen them in my head But overall I achieved what I had in mind Whether it worked I

    bit of After Effects near the start www daisychapman com www same same co uk Posted in Film Making Tags Bath C300 Director Director of Photography Editor film music video short film Samantha Marais Moonchild music video 29 Mar 11 by obenson Sam was working at Womad when she spotted the steam powered carousel belonging to Carters Steam Fair carterssteamfair co uk When she asked if we could shoot a music video on it they very graciously said yes so she called me and asked if I could do that the next day when I was going to Womad anyway This did mean there was no time to plan but what an opportunity This was all shot hand held some of it with me riding backwards on a horse not easy as there s nothing to hold on to The only definite idea I had from listening to the song beforehand was to overlap some video to match the overlapped vocals I shot as much as I could we rode the carousel in the morning afternoon and evening in the hope I would have enough material to work with Technical I mainly used my 5D Mark II but I did some shots with my 7D at 50fps so I could use it for slow motion We used my iPhone for playback with just one headphone so it wouldn t show in the shots I couldn t hear this over the carousel music so sync had to be done entirely by eye I edited it roughly in Premiere CS5 then chose bits I thought would work with overlapping video and worked on those in After Effects mainly for masking Gear Canon 5D Mark II Canon 7D 24 105mm f 4 IS L 70 200mm f 2 8 IS L Posted in Music Video Videography Tags carousel hand held music video outdoor Samantha Marais 0 Comments FranKo video photos 16 Dec 10 by obenson Paul Dudbridge on camera FranKo s guitarist St Martin s church Bristol The actress and FranKo s vocalist On the run A ghost FranKo s vocalist Beautiful girl beautiful light it s great being a photographer Hot tea to keep the actress alive UPDATE 25 2 11 The finished video is now online http www frankoband com I was asked to take photos during a music video shoot in Bristol this past weekend It was directed by Paul Dudbridge who directed the short film Maria which I also took photos for Always nice to be asked back by someone I ve worked with The music video was shot in a church in Bristol over the whole weekend we started at 08 30 Saturday morning finished at 01 15 Sunday morning then started again at 09 00 on Sunday That s what filming is like long days Oh and the church wasn t heated it was colder inside the church than outside But the crew carried on regardless kept alive by steaming mugs of tea and a lovely stew
