  • Room by Room Guide
the Vatican The marble bust depicts Giuseppe s uncle Emmanuele and its fine carving and details show it to be by the hand of Valenti Sala Lombarda This room epitomises the ideal of the Louis XIV style dictated by Carlo Sada The gilt decoration around the room with symbols drawn from Ancient Rome is typical of the style The paintings also follow the ideal of symmetry where some show examples of alterations and have been added on to or cut down to create a symmetrical pattern The paintings are of interest and include important copies as well as original Maltese works by artists such as Francesco Zahra and Stefano Erardi The Pompeian Dining Room The glory of Pompeii is the theme for this Dining room where the Marquis Scicluna would sit at table amongst his guests or for a simple family meal Annibale Lupi was sent to the actual site to acquire photographs and sketches thus the decoration by Filippo Venuti can be said to have been directly inspired The walls are decorated with typical Pompeian scenes and figures are based on the prettiest local girls from Naxxar The Marchesa even posed for the artist since she was from Naxxar and is depicted as the most beautiful of all elegantly reclining on a sofa The Bedroom and John s Room This is the only room in the house which follows a religious theme a popular choice at the time The decoration is divided between stucco and painting where Giacomo Olzai takes care of the painting and Vincenzo Cardona along with his students of the stucco The ceiling painting dominates the room and depicts the Immaculate Conception a direct copy from an original painting by Bartolome Esteban Murillo The painting is surrounded by sculptural decorative elements and putti continue down into the frieze and link the earthly realm to the heavenly ceiling scene through their gestures The Bedroom leads to what would have been John s room which has now been turned into a bridal room to host the bride on her wedding night at Palazzo Parisio The Family Chapel Also leading from the Bedroom is the family chapel The chapel never had a permanent location in Palazzo Parisio and the earliest family members can remember it is when it was places downstairs The Chapel contains an original altar from the chapel in Fort Ricasoli which was commissioned by the Grand Master Nicolas Cotoner The Marquis Study The stucco decoration in the study forms an allegory of the Marquis Scicluna This is a fine showcase for Vincenzo Cardona and his students who took care of the sculptural work At each of the four corners are medallions representing the four continents of trade alluding to the Marquis Scicluna as man involved in trade The other endeavours of the Marquis are represented in the scenes of putti exchanging coins and a cheque which shows the Marquis Scicluna as a banker and being part of the family company which opened the first wholly bank
