    impressed by both the range of her own voice and the un clichéd way she works with technology Maybe it takes a woman to get beyond the boys with toys traps of performing live with lots of gear Z yes her last name was changed when she moved to San Francisco in 1984 has a special place in the hearts of avant garde music fans on the West Coast but we ll get a chance to see hear her evening length multi media one woman opera Voci here in NYC this week For this production the voice ultimately Z s main instrument will be aided and abetted by real time processing and video accompaniment as she plays with the myriad ways that vocal elements impact our interactions with the world I got a hold of a DVD of some of the show s highlights In the course of the performance Z passes through a series of vignettes making cutting and comic points along the way She moves from dueting with the irritating you have no new messages voice on the answering machine to singing in the fantastic reverb of a simulated shower stall At one point she even asks the

    by San Francisco based composers then the composers were interviewed onstage by violist composer Kurt Rohde one of the performers next after intermission questions from the audience to the composers and finally a repeat performance of the whole program Through the interaction the audience gained some sense of who the composers were and what they were trying to do The discussion also of course gave the listeners an idea of what to listen for the second time through De Kooning Movements II by Carlos Sanchez Gutierrez was the most accomplished and engrossing work on the program Scored for string trio oboe and piano the piece took its cues from the gestural energy of the painter s style Sanchez Gutierrez fashioned a complex ever shifting landscape of sound loosely analogous to the pictorial space in a de Kooning canvas The chords multiple voices and instrumental timbres of this musical space varied enormously from transparency through different densities sometimes restricted to a narrow band sometimes encompassing a wide spectrum of sound This flexibility was a potent expressive resource that the composer used to excellent effect The piece began with a few half and whole steps played by the cello separated by long silences From these notes an ephemeral web of contrapuntal voices and sonorities emerged expanding and contracting from moment to moment Occasionally a melody came out of the vortex Sometimes the sound was reduced to a single line sometimes the music rose clamorously to engage all the instruments It was like a force of nature A Colorful Mosaic A Folkish Collage The other works on the program were markedly different with a looser idea of expressive structure Beth Custer s Scary Monster for string trio was arranged like a colorful mosaic in brief contrasting episodes Changing textures and novel string effects

    space invader kind Gaijin which premiered in a brief run at Theater Artaud last week takes its title from the Japanese slang for foreigner The language barrier is a constant theme words are consistently portrayed as a slippery medium for revealing or concealing our different worlds Whether dealing with invasive immigration questions riffing in double Dutch or channeling karaoke Z comically tweaks the ways we use language to maintain and transcend personal and national borders Floating through this babel of words is Z s extraordinary acoustic sensibility which transforms everything from glottal stops to ambient street noise into a strange and beautiful music Live electronic processing and the performer s own trademark BodySynth a MIDI controller that links sound to physical gestures play a big role but all points meet in Z s exceptional voice which can glide from soulful blues to operatic virtuosity in the course of a single phrase That world embracing voice is at the center of her aesthetic and it s also the affecting heart of this piece which for all the challenging othernesses it details race gender class appearance sexuality nationality also provides a living model of harmonic multicultural coexistence The performance includes dancers Leigh

    Bestehen des Tanztheaters Wuppertal noch vor nur einer handvoll Zuhörern ihr Deutschland Debüt war nun die Unterbarmer Galerie Epikur ausverkauft Der Wuppertaler Musiker Peter Kowald hatte die amerikanische Künstlerin erneut nach Wuppertal eingeladen und sie löste mit ihren höchst kreativen Klangkollagen Beifallsstürme aus Nach einem klagfarbenreichen und vielschichtigen kontrabass Solo Kowalds demonstrierte die Kulturklub und Kultfigur aus San Francisco wie schon vor knapp zwei Jahren was mit elektronischen Gerätschaften musikalisch alles möglich ist Mittels am Körper befestigter Kontaktmikrofone Sampler Effektgeräten Computer und ihrer professionell ausgebildeten Stimme wurden von der Klangkünstlerin Programme abgespielt Gesangslinien Sprache und Geräusche aufgenommen verfremdet wieder zugespielt und neu zusammengemischt Diese Art von Klangkollagen stellte Pamela Z in einen grossen musikalischen Kontext So kreierte sie mit freitonalen Gesangslinien zu Streicherklängen täuschend echt Avantgardemusik als käme sie aus den Federn zeitgenössischer Komponisten Oder sie spielte mit Alltagsgeräuschen Stimmenewirr ähnlich einem Volksauflauf kombinierte sie mit immer wiederkehrenden Rhythmen und Gesängen zu neuen spannenden musikalischen Strukturen Dann wiederum witzelte sie über eine Briefscheiberein deren Computer defect ist imitierte dabei Schreibmaschinengeklapper und unterschrieb ironisch mit pamelaz schreibmaschine com Nach diese beeindruckenden Vorstellung ging es im Duo mit Peter Kowald weiter Hier zeigten sich beide als sehr sensible Musiker Konzentriert gingen beide

    aus San Francisco Foto Lori Eanes Es ist schon erstaunlich was mit der Digital und Computertechnologie heute künsterlisch alles möglich ist Oft als kreatives Medium geringschätzig belächelt bewies aber Pamela Z aus den Verienigten Staaten mit ihrem Konzert im Rahmen des Nachtprogramms Stimme und Lied im Pavillon eindrucksvoll das Gegenteil Umjubelt war ihr Wuppertaler Deutschlanddebüt Was die Kulturklub und Kultfigur aus San Francisco auf der Bühne des Discoschuppens neben dem Schauspielhaus an Klängen und Geräuschen aus ihren elektonischen Gerätschaften Digital Delay Sampler Harmonizer zuberte stiess auf ungeteilte Bewunderung Gesteuert mit einem Mikrophon un Hautkontakten ähnlich wie bei einem Elektrokardiogramm EKG wurden Programme aufgerufen und Klänge aufgenommen weiterverarbeitet und verfremdet Da war auf einmal ein zwölftöniges Klavierstück Digitalsound Stimmengewirr sich uberlagernde Wortfetzen oder Strassengetümmel von San Francisco und deren berühmte Tram zu hören Damit spielte Pamela Z höchst kreativ kollagierte und mixte die Effekte zu neuen Formen In allen Musikgenres scheint si bewandert zu sein eine professionelle Musikausbildung war offensichtlich Beispielsweise könnte sie mit ihrer ausgewogenen und ausdrucksstarken Stimme getrost Mitglied eines Openensembles sein Ausgesprochen intellegent überlagerte sie so manche Geräuschschichtungen und Klangkonglomerate mit soch schönen arienhaften Gesängen als hätte sie kurz zuvor bei einer Opernaufführung mitgewirkt Mit dieser Vorstellung demonstrierte

    worlds Z performs with the BodySynth to trigger an array of sonic textures that would intrigue any musician In performance Z dons the BodySynth s 4 channel unit which comes with four wireless sensors able to detect electrical impulses from her muscle movements The BodySynth s processor uses a variety of algorithms to translate electromyogram EMG signals into music via MIDI messages Up to four different MIDI channels can be programmed to interpret the continuous gesteral motion of Z s muscles the more effort involved in the movement the higher the pitch or deeper the pitch bend With her playful approach to sound design Z wields a sonic palette that is as delightful as it is disturbing Armed with electrodes and using Opcode MAX software as the objet oriented musical programming environment Z is able to execute a few simple moves to create intricate rhythmic patterns lush harmonic pads or washes of precalculated noise She strategically locates sensors on different body parts so that a quick flick of the wrist might trigger samples of street noise a shimmy to the left could unleash a barrage of nonsensical or cryptic utterances and a shoulder roll could be the ticket for a
