  • Carbon Song Cycle
    by passing sonic material between the players and exploring audio elements related to the imagery in Christina s video material The video is built from footage that Christina shot at petroleum fields natural gas locations and geothermal sites around back country California along with carbon inspired drawings and images of processes involving intense heat and chemical transformations The piece premiered at the Berkeley Art Museum Pacific Film Archive in April 2012 where the artists explored working site specifically mapping video to the architecture of the immense gallery For future performances the multi channel video projections will be mapped and reconfigured for screens and architectural surfaces of the venues in question The ensemble for the premiere was Pamela Z music composition and voice electronics Christina McPhee video composition installation and performance Dana Jessen bassoon Charith Premawardhana viola Theresa Wong cello and voice and Suki O Kane percussion For the November 2013 New York premiere New York musicians Marika Hughes and Russell Greenberg performed the cello and percussion parts The original ensemble will perform the work in San Francisco at Joe Goode Annex in February of 2014 Carbon Song Cycle is commissioned by New Music Bay Area and is made possible in part by grants from the MAP Fund and New Music USA s Commissioning Music USA program The New York Premiere was made possible by generous donations from Anonymous Jesse Bear Linda Bouchard Ky Boyd Seth Brenzel Laura Carmichael Terri Cohn Nikola Colendich Nicholas Croft Elise de Jong John Drumheller Elizabeth Dungan Hank Dutt Dina Emerson Anne and Peter Esmonde Thea Farhadian Frank Ferraro Evelyn Ficarra Jeanne C Finley Joshua Fried s RADIO WONDERLAND Ellen Fullman Andrew Gilbert Sam Green Donna Hill Lyn Horton GH Hovagimyan Brenda Hutchinson Liz Keim Kathy Ketman Kevin Killian David King Chris Komater Joe Lasqo Dohee

    Los Angeles Wunderkabinet which premiered in September of 2005 with a two week run at The LAB Gallery in San Francisco has also been presented at REDCAT in Los Angeles October 2006 and at the King Street Theatre in Kitchener Ontario as part of the Open Ears Festival April 2007 The boundary between reality and imagination is blurred as Wunderkabinet s central character Alice May Williams makes her strange and magical journey in search of the scientists of the Mount Wilson Observatory to whom she has been sending abundant correspondence only to find herself in a strange cabinet of curiosities where she eventually becomes a docent The music of Wunderkabinet is performed by Pamela Z voice and live electronic processing and Matthew Brubeck cello electronics The October 2006 REDCAT performances featured Alex Kelly on cello electronics The piece is performed in a multi layered set designed by Pamela Z which constantly shifts and changes as it is bathed in Christina McPhee s projected images evoking the dark yet radiant focus of the museum s dioramas The score composed by Z and Brubeck utilizes bowed and plucked strings sampled found objects and a wide range of vocal work ranging from operatic

    Jeanne Finley and John Muse and a stunning lighting design by Elaine Buckholtz Written composed and performed by Pamela Z Voci consists of layered dynamically varied segments incorporating live electroacoustic vocal work with real time digital processing vocal samples triggered with light and gesture controllers and video projected and on monitors The stage is alive with unexpected visual and auditory transformations and from time to time Z performs virtual duets with some surprise guests who appear in the form of video samples These segments approach voice as anatomy as character as identifier and communicator Weaving together stories about voice with arias non verbal utterances cries and whispers choruses of real and synthetic voices and fragments of scientific information Pamela Z builds a kind of polyphonic mono opera Voci has been performed at ODC Theatre San Francisco premiere 2003 the Kitchen NY 2004 and Trafo House Budapest Hungary 2006 It is slated for performances at MCA Chicago as part of the Chicago Humanities Festival November 2006 and WPAS Washington DC May 2007 Ms Z a well known figure on the international contemporary music circuit is a wonderfully compelling performer with a lot of range Ms Z has created a kind of
