voice Help Me Hurt Me Sociology Feed me Help me Hurt me Eat me It was an incredibly powerful work that I d never seen before though apparently Nauman made it in the early 1990s Such a perfect crowning moment for my last day in Paris My first several days in Istanbul were spent sequestered in a tiny practice room at MIAM ITU University working up a suite of pieces including a new work called Mind Mist to perform with Nihan at the end of the week in Istanbul and then at Bilkent University in Ankara a few days later It was strange to be in Turkey for almost a week before really getting to see anything but we made up for lost time in the few days we had free toward the end of my visit Nihan showed me a great time eating out drinking raki at a cafe in a bohemian quarter going to the Bazaar visiting a beautiful Mosque and getting steamed bathed scrubbed and massaged at a hammam Venice Biennale Vernissage 2015 The final leg of my journey was a joyful visit to Venice to see this year s Biennale offereings It was the first time I d ever been there at the time of the opening and things were really hopping The two main sites Giardini and Arsenale were just lousy with journalists and art world people as were all the vaporetti water buses and the little cobblestone streets of the city I never saw so many people in Venice dressed like me in black with avant coifs and smart art world shoes For the first 2 days I was surrounded by them and then things settled down to more of the usual spectrum of people when the openings were done and the sites opened to the general public One evening on a vaporetto as packed as a rush hour A Train and I caught site of fimmaker media artist Kathy Brew I squeezed over to where she and her friends were assembled and wound up spending the rest of the evening hopping with them from one Biennale party to the next zipping up and down the Grand Canal in water taxis drinking prosecco and cocktails and laughing the night away There were so many great exhibitions Some of the stand outs for me were Camille Norment s installation in the Nordic Pavilion an amazing work of red string and brass keys in the Japanese Pavilion Joan Jonas work USA a curious work with live moving trees France and Nina Katchadourian s installation in the Armenian exhibition on San Lazzaro But there were many other exiting works all over the grounds and some very nice off site exhibitions peppered throughout the city I spent my entire stay looking at art and eating Back Home Back to Work When I finally returned to San Francisco it took longer than usual to get over my jet lag but I ve launched back into my work here tying

and Stockhausen I was able to catch a small performance by the inimitable Dohee Lee a handful of lovely concerts at the Center for New Music and a delightful site specific Russian River Opera by Hugh Livingston And as one of its organizers I was of course afforded the opportunity to attend all of the evenings of the San Francisco Electronic Music Festival which have been remarkably good this year featuring great touring artists like zoviet france from the UK as well as some of our own shining locals like Xo Xihn As I write this I m still coming down from the excitement of the final evening with Nic Collins Ezra Buchla and Julia Mazawa All four evenings were stellar and made for a very satisfying cap for our first fifteen years View of the disappearing ghost bridge from the new eastern span bike path Recharge and Go Again As I catch my breath from this crazy period I must already begin work on the next set of upcoming projects I have planned Completed composing deadlines always seem to get replaced by new and upcoming composing deadlines I need to start work writing a song for Amy X Neuburg which she will perform with the Paul Dresher Ensemble in December on a Cal Performances concert featuring photo inspired songs commissioned from 10 different composers And I will also begin work on a collaborative multi media chamber work about bridges called Span in collaboration with video artist Carole Kim In preparation for this work I recently took a bicycle trip along the pedestrian path of the new eastern span of the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge I did the ride with my friend video artist Jeanne Finley and we photographed the gradually disappearing ghost bridge as I like to call the retired cantilever section of the bridge that is currently being dismantled We both got a lot of great still and video shots of the old bridge and the busy activity on the bay I m gearing up for all the touring I have scheduled for the fall As I look at the next few months of my calendar it seems a bit daunting but I must say that I m looking forward to getting out and about again after so much stationary albeit insanely busy time spent here in San Francisco Read on for details of my numerous upcoming on the road engagements Love PZ FLAX on Market Street another San Francisco institution about to disappear Jeanne Finley PZ w Bridge Luciano Chessa and Sarah Cahill play the ROOM Series Donald Swearingen glimpses his reflection at SOMArts Pamela Z performing La Reproduction Interdit at SOMArts Mary Armentrout s Installation in Artaud Lobby Ronald Chase and Pamela Z take a coffee at Universal Sarah Davachi looking timeless with her analog synth at SFEMF Evelyn Ficara performing a very delightful and just piece at MilkBar Adria Otte in iso booth at PZ s Studio Wobbly plays the ROOM Series David Dunn

at the alter of the DIA Beacon where one can be immersed in the massive scale works of avant garde masters And then there were the priceless December performances I was lucky enough to be in New York in time to see Theresa Wong s The Unlearning with Carla Kihlstedt at Roulette and to see Robert Wilson s The Life and Death of Marina Abromovic at the Park Avenue Armory Two very different but very moving performances Robert Wilson s work always shakes me to the core and leaves me buzzing with the desire to run back to my studio and immerse myself in making new work of my own This piece was no exception From the opening preset of three Marina Abromovic open caskets floating in a misty blue void with half a dozen Dobermans elegantly roaming the stage to the stately anthems performed by Antony and the vibrant rants and narrations of Willem DeFoe I was spellbound for the entire three hours San Francisco Goodness and Plate Full o Commissions When I returned home at the end of December I turned my attentions to mounting the San Francisco Premiere of Carbon Song Cycle and organizing the studio recording of the work Christina and I had wonderfully full houses for both nights at Joe Goode Annex where Circuit Network produced this installment And the next day I went into the studio Women s Audio Mission to record the instrumental tracks while I still had all the ensemble members in town With Dana Jessen Theresa Wong Charith Premawardhana and Suki O Kane in the studio and me in the control room in the capable hands and ears of Terri Winston and Laura Dean at the desk we managed to capture most of what we needed in a long intensive day of tracking We d had one other recording day earlier in the week and I ll be replacing my scratch vocal and electronics tracks and doing the mixing at a later date I think this is going to be a very nice record when it s done Charith Premawardhana Theresa Wong Suki O Kane Dana Jessen at Women s Audio Mission recording Carbon Song Cycle Looking ahead my plate is still very full I was happy to be informed that I ve been granted funding for two large scale projects slated for next season One supported by the San Francisco Arts Commission is a solo performance work called Memoria in which I ll continue exploring memory and the other a commission supported by a Gerbode Hewlett grant is a work called Span exploring bridges on which I ll be working with video artist Carole Kim In addition to those projects I have some smaller scale but more pressing works to create including a song commissioned by Amy X Neuburg and the Paul Dresher Ensemble for a concert this winter and a short work for percussion and voice electronics that I ll perform as a duo with Steven Schick for the
