  • Mongolia Winter Festivals Tour - Traveller's Tales
here s what she had to say about the Camel Festival This is an amazing trip if you are mad enough to want to experience such extreme cold For me experiencing life in the freezer was as much a part of the trip as the beautiful woolly camels We organised camels to ride in the procession These stubborn creatures have morphed from their summer bedraggled look when they are moulting to fluffy almost cuddly You can feel the warmth coming from the camel and you don t really want to get off I seem to have quite a natural talent for camel riding and next time I d like to enter the racing The camels trot several km out to a start point and then race back to the finish line It s like the start of the Grand National but more chaotic with camels sitting down and heading off on random tangents We drove to the starting line of the race and followed the riders for some distance before whizzing off to meet them at the finish line A row of spectators standing atop their camels were already scanning the distance for the small cloud of dust and snow getting closer The end of any race in Mongolia is exciting Locals whoop and cheer and rush to touch the winner before then running to collect their winnings from the local wheeler dealer who has opened a book on the whole proceedings After a warming and hearty lunch and a traditional game of ankle bone shooting in the village hall it was back out to more chaos as teams compete to load a whole ger and it s contents onto the camels Spectators flee from the arena as unbroken camels are tamed a proper wild west rodeo AVERAGE TEMPERATURES Ulaanbaatar
