  • Nomadic Life in Mongolia - Traveller's Tales
cold air that settles close to the frozen valley bottoms and rivers where he lives during the summer His winter place is also in the lea of a large mountain which protects them from the bitter northerly winds His summer camp is on the open valley floor to make the most of the cool breeze and easily accessible river water as well as good grazing for his animals Naraa s horses Naraa and Buje have a simple belief system Work hard do a good job and be honest He is not a religious man although he does have a small shrine to the Dalai Lama in his ger If you talk with Naraa you quickly discover that his spiritual connection is primarily with his environment He truly loves the area in which he lives and loves what he does Naraa chose his life in the countryside over one in the city His father is a university lecturer his sister a Beijing banker and his brother a neurosurgeon in Kyoto Naraa has a degree in mechanical engineering with a special diploma in Land Cruiser engines He chose his current path against his parents will but you are unlikely to find anyone anywhere who is more sure and satisfied with their choice of lifestyle The family spend their days doing necessary chores milking at dawn and dusk herding the animals in to keep them safe from wolves collecting firewood collecting water and sewing The nomadic life is busy though simple a stark contrast perhaps to the rapid urbanization of Mongolia Buje milking in the early morning The kids have a great life in the countryside They have a huge area in which to roam Bayasa is a little young to go off exploring but enjoys painting and colouring as well as chasing film crews and tourists Tsindee loves cycling and uses his bike instead of his horse for much of the herding Tsindee is the primary herder in the family when he is at home It is his job to take the animals to good grazing and bring them in at night during the summer This means he gets a huge amount of time to be in the wide open spaces of Mongolia He is quickly becoming a man and notwithstanding his love of cycling he is an expert horseman During the winter time the family live within 1 5km of three neighbours but none have children so Bayasa must often play alone unless friends are visiting However in the summer they live a stone s throw from Munkhuu which means Tsindee and Bayasa have another family of three children to play with Tsindee and his bicycle Following Naraa s refusal to bow to the will of his parents he is unsurprisingly open minded about the paths of his children Tsindee is currently interested in being in the military Naraa thinks this sounds like a good idea If it will make Tsindee satisfied and happy then he supports him Their three year
