  • Meet the team — The Parnassian Ensemble
    University since 1996 Recently she was invited to take part in the New London Chamber Ensemble s recording Carl Nielsen Music for Wind and Piano released on the Meridian records label Sophie formed her own baroque period chamber group The Parnassian Ensemble in 1998 Helen Hooker recorder Helen studied recorder at Trinity College of Music with Philip Thorby graduating with a first class degree and the Post Graduate Certificate in performance with distinction She also won the Grace Wylie Thesis Prize and the Louise Band Prize for musicianship Helen has performed widely in chamber ensembles and as a soloist Recent critically acclaimed performances have included the Walter Bergmann Centenary Concert in London and concerto performances in The Hague and Leiden In 2009 Helen released her first solo CD Helen and Friends which includes Steve Marshall s Recorder Concerto No 2 a work written for and dedicated to Helen She is also Musical Director of the Thames Valley Recorder Orchestra and works as guest conductor with recorder ensembles and orchestras throughout the British Isles Lynden Cranham baroque cello Lynden studied at the Royal Academy of Music and the Juilliard School She toured and broadcast in Britain and Europe with the Burnell Trio before moving to the US where she taught at Cornell University and toured with Accordo Perfetto Piano Quartet She was soloist in the Elgar at Cornell featured in modern and period instrument solo recitals and gave the US premiere of Lutoslawski s Grave Metamorphosis for Cello and Piano She premiered Steven Stucky s Voyages for Cello and Orchestra at Yale and in New York City Since returning to the UK she has toured worldwide and recorded with England s major period instrument orchestras with such conductors as Gardiner Rattle and Hogwood Lynden performs regularly at music clubs and festivals

    Huene Cello Lynden s cello is of Italian or German origin possibly dating from the end of the 17th century to the middle of the 18th century At some point since then alterations were made so that it could be played as a modern instrument Lynden has had it restored to its Baroque state It is so fragile that it is lined with linen Harpsichords We are lucky to have a choice of harpsichords to perform with as David has two beautiful instruments Ruckers Hemsch This is a double manual French style instrument made by Anne and Ian Tucker in 1999 it is a replica of the Ruckers Hemsch harpsichord 1763 in the Cobbe Collection at Hatchlands Park The original begain life as a single manual by Andreas Ruckers later converted into a double manual by Henri Hemsch It is identical down to the individual brush strokes of the painting Highly decorated with gold leaf it has two eight foot registers a four foot register and a buff stop It is strung in iron and brass with free range turkey quills The sound is long and richly resonant Grimaldi This is a single manual Italian style harpsichord made by Ransom
