their way to Muktinath it s a dusty uphill trudge The richer take jeeps and the richest helicopters We finally caught a glimpse of Annapurna 1 the 8000 meter peak of the range sitting impossibly high above trail We re now in the Kali Gandaki gorge the deepest in the world what with being between Annapurna and Dhaulagiri We stopped at the Buddhist Monastery in Jharkot which also houses the Shree Jharkot Traditional Medical Center and School I toured the facility and spoke at length with its program director The school was started as a way to preserve Tibetan medicine which is at risk of falling into oblivion especially the traditional knowledge of medicinal plants About 20 underprivileged children take free schooling there comprised of the usual curriculum which is supplemented by instruction on Tibetan medicine from a trained practitioner Promising older students are sent to Kathmandu for additional training to become practitioners themselves Chhongniri met with the resident practitioner or amchi for his cold which is really more about allergies His visit cost the equivalent of 3 50 for the checkup and a two week prescription We are now in the Mustang region which is very austere compared to

  • Trek 16 km to Muktinath (3800 meters) through Thorung Pass (5416 meters) - Round Annapurna Trek 2014 Fall - Daily Dispatches
nasty cold just keep your head down and put one foot in front of the other My clothing choice was working I had everything on and only my hands were cold I warmed up briefly at High Camp and pressed on figuring my friends would reel me in higher up I felt pretty bad for two reasons I wasn t drinking enough because of the cold and my pace was too fast Our slogan had been plus lentment mai jamais arret but it clearly wasn t working now Day started to break and I forced myself to take a rest for water and a snack and wouldn t you know my world seemed a little brighter It was still a grovel to the pass but such a marvelous feeling to arrive Alex and Sofie showed up a while later Alex unbelievably in his shorts and Sofie somewhat incoherent Quite a few people were hurting some scarily so And at every switchback a Nepali stood ready with his horse to whisk you to the pass for a small fortune After the obligatory pictures by the summit sign I headed off with Chhongnuri and Mingmar soon catching up We were alone on

  • Rest Day in Manang - Round Annapurna Trek 2014 Fall - Daily Dispatches
through it all but the spam and spuds funnily enough little bits of spam ended up in my lunch hmmm Chhongnuri and I hiked up to the Chongkor Gompa overlooking the town but I wanted to get to at least 4000 meters the altitude of our next town So I bid my guide adieu and followed yak tracks up to an abandoned yak herder s corral and buildings There was a chorten still higher that I reached with some effort and decided to make it my highpoint Stellar weather let me have a good view all the way to Manaslu Annapurna 3 towered above me with a huge icefall between it and Gangapurna to the west It was just me the flapping prayer flags and faint roar of the river far below as I drifted off After some time a huge shadow passed by which turned out to be an eagle wheeling on the rising wind I took it as a sign to depart and raced the afternoon clouds back to the valley bottom As I write this I m having a nice mint tea alone in the toasty warm hotel restaurant watching hearing the thunderstorms pour over the range

side of the valley with the most spectacular view of the north faces of the Annapurna range At the risk of being cliche there really were dazzling white peaks set against a cloudless cobalt blue sky Annapurna 2 3 4 and Gangapurna with the Manaslu range off in the distance Of course my camera ran out of batteries immediately but Sofie and Alex had adopted me for the day and

  • Trek to Lower Pisang - Round Annapurna Trek 2014 Fall - Daily Dispatches
the old trail as possible Parts of it are wonderful with old rockworks and ancient crumbling Buddhist chortens maniwalls and stupas But other parts are now impassable with decrepit bridges and water running down the track Feeling very much like home now with the temperature vegetation and surrounding cliffs One even looks like Burstall Slabs and is apparently considered sacred as a sort of launching pad for spirits into the heavens Had lunch with part of the herd and I m staying at the same hotel as Sofie and Alex in Pisang I hiked up the hill to Upper Pisang and there it was the massive peak of Annapurna 2 I laughed at all the early pictures I d taken lower down of these tiny glimpses of the peaks above the forest Here was almost 5000 meters of north face completely unobstructed I climbed to the monastery where the monks were chanting and sounding their huge horns and listened for a while Then I hiked further up to the top of the hill alone where a shrine sat far above the valley And as I looked out I could similar shrines all over the valley sides It was an incredible

  • Trek to Chame - Round Annapurna Trek 2014 Fall - Daily Dispatches
to get from the old section to my room on the second floor I met Sofie and Alex in the dining room a nice French couple on a round the world trip who I recognized from earlier in the trek We were off early in great weather The lush ferns and deciduous trees are giving way to pines reminding me of the trails in Canmore There were some nasty steep sections and I bonked about 15 minutes before reaching our lunch spot An excellent curry soup and a bunch of apples off the tree got me upright again Trekking through the afternoon I ran into more and more people We re a herd of turtles and I know about a dozen now as we chat while leap frogging each other through the day We arrived in Chame after about five hours hiking plus an hour and a half lunch break and stayed in one of the first tea houses I initially thought I wanted one of the nicer ones down by the river but it turned out we were the only people in our house so again we were part of the family for the night I went to visit
