  • Final Trek to Home - Everest Expedition 2011 - Daily Dispatches
saying our goodbyes to our amazing support staff Pasang our cook Nigma and Mingma our 2 kitchen boys we started the long trek back to Tengboche We arrived there after a good 8 our trek tired but happy to be in such an oxygen rich environment We were all in awe to finally see some flowers birds and green grass We continued the next way all the way to Lukla with overall took us about 11 hours to get there It was a long day our legs still tired from Everest but it still didn t prevent Robin and Oskar to make their way to the Irish pub when we arrived in Lukla I was just very excited to take my first real hot shower in 2 months and to have access to a sit down toilet We were lucky the next morning to be on the only flight out of Lukla the airport closed for two days due to bad weather as soon as our plane took off from the airstrip Now we are back in Kathmandu enjoying one of the nicest hotels around the Yak and Yeti We have been lounging by the pool have had massages gone

  • SUMMIT DAY, MAY 13th, 4am: WE MADE IT!! - Everest Expedition 2011 - Daily Dispatches
col We arrived at camp at around 3pm and luckily we already had one tent set up put up by the sherpas when they climbed the previous week to drop off the oxygen because it was impossible to set up our second tent in such high winds So the five of us bundled up in our little three men tent rested as much as possible with oxygen to regain some strength tried to eat chocolate bars and basically watched our water come to a mild boil after 2 hours But already at 6pm it was time to get ready for the summit push Every move such as putting your boots on requires a huge effort and it takes very little time without oxygen that you begin craving for your oxygen mask After double checking our gear Pemba and I were ready to head out by 730pm and Robin Kame and Ringe headed out one hour later It was a clear night the winds had died down and we started to climb being one of the first teams to head out that evening It is difficult to describe what goes on in your mind when you start the summit push For me after months of over thinking this day months of planning researching training acclimatizing 8 weeks since leaving home 4 weeks at basecamp what was my best strategy to climb to the summit for the next 12 hours Well it was to stop overthinking it think of as little as possible and just physically climb Everest is also a big mental challenge and each person has to find what will mentally help them climb through the night in the bitter cold and through some of the most miserable conditions imaginable There are moments where I truly had to remind myself that I had in me to continue on and reach the summit but there other moments where I needed to distract my mind and well I sang a lot of mindless childhood songs over and over again many thanks to my brother Eric and my cousin Caroline for the songs After 4 5 hours we arrived at the balcony a flat spot just before the beginning of the south east ridge of Everest It s a constant steep climb very rocky at some places and somewhat difficult to manage with crampons But we had a good pace and reached the South summit earlier than expected We changed oxygen bottles at the south summit and managed to eat my only chocolate bar the only food I had in for the entire climb After the south summit begins the most exposed section of the climb a very narrow ridge that leads to the famous Hillary step and then the exposed ridge continues all the way to the summit The ridge is so narrow at times about only a foot and half wide that if you tripped you would easily fall a few kilometers o your death staying into Nepal if you fell

as much food as possible stay hydrated and get a lot of sleep Just having a small cold or GI upset at this point would be enough to not have the required strength and endurance to reach the summit Call us paranoid but that hand sanitizer really is our best friend Many trekkers come and go through base camp and unfortunately can carry many viruses from down below so we have to be extra careful at this point who you have contact with Yes we are THAT paranoid According to the latest weather reports the first good weather window for the summit are May 12th and May 13th If this weather forecast holds this is our plan for our summit attempt Leave 4am may 10th Tuesday and make our way to camp 2 Leave early morning may 11th for camp 3 set up camp and rest Leave early morning for camp 4 arrive early afternoon Rest eat hydrate prepare to leave for summit approx 7pm Leave for summit approx 7 8pm hope to summit after sunrise Make our way back down from summit stop at camp 4 to eat hydrate If still feeling well after a short rest pack up and head down to camp2 Arrive late afternoon sleep at camp2 Back to base camp in the morning Party like Rockstars Many teams will be trying to summit during this weather window so we hope it wont be too crowded near the fixed lines for example at the famous Hilary Step In the meantime here at basecamp you can there is a general sense of excitement with the climbers that after all this time and effort the summit now seems so close for many of us But we are as a whole also nervous anxious somewhat fed up some of

the importance of wearing your helmet as there is constant debris snow ice gear falling from above you So the climb up to camp 3 7300m about half way up the Lhotse face is very steep and strenuous and requires a constant effort for hours Take a step breathe breathe breathe breathe take another step breather breathe breathe breathe There is no shortcut up this mountain no easy way it is really a matter of putting one foot in front of the other and attack this mountain step by step We made it to camp 3 by early afternoon and we quickly turned back as once again it started snowing and the conditions were turning for the worse Our goal was just to touch camp 3 and to sleep lower at camp 2 We repelled quickly down the Lhotse wall soooo much faster coming down than up and made our way back to the comfort our tents exhausted but happy to have attained our goal We returned to base camp every early on Tuesday wanting to miss the heat of the morning sun But again the khumbu icefalls had changed new ropes and new ladders were installed after an avalanche struck the upper part of the icefalls This is also why we always want to travel in the icefall early or in the night to avoid when the snow is the most unstable Begining Lotse Face We are now resting again at base camp for 6 or 7 days We need to gain some strength rest eat a lot and prepare for our summit bid It is very exciting to know that our next time up our attempt for the summit I will give you details of what the summit bid entails in the next blog Kame at Camp 2
