  • Tilche to Jagat - Manaslu Trekking 2012 - Daily Dispatches
and we re going to have a big roaring river along the trail again When walking into the first village on the route Dharapani this morning it was like an explosion of colors and people Sure some buckets of purple white and yellow paint had made it up to Bemthang and Tilche as well but in Dharapani they d been going crazy with colors Pink green purple turquoise white all sorts of blue yellow you name it any combination of them at anything everywhere And within the first five minutes in the village we d seen more foreigners than during the whole trek The explanation to this is quite simple Dharapani and the villages south from here are all part of the Annapurna and Manang treks while we ve been pretty much on our own around Manaslu From Dharapani down to Jagat we met a constant flow of tourists on their way up towards Annapurna The more people we met who were carrying their own gear the more I appreciated our decision to use porters The circuit around the eighth highest mountain on the planet has definitely been challenging enough with day packs only Jagat seems like quite a buzzing

can both confirm that the Nepalese nettles sting worse than Swedish ones I got a little nostalgic yesterday when we were sitting on the top of the pass and we got a Mars chocolate bar from our guides my mind went to when I was a kid sitting in the yellow chairlift in Austria and my mother gave me her favorite chocolate bar Mars The mind does play interesting tricks

  • Larke Pass - Manaslu Trekking 2012 - Daily Dispatches
light and colors on photo but they do not totally make the extraordinary view justice Today s trek can be described as infinite moraine The final hour up to Larke La 5106 m a s l was tedious we did not gain much in altitude but we never seemed to get there the hike just dragged out forever Furthermore we were all monofunctional walking and breathing at the same time was hard enough and one had to stop in order to talk or drink It was not a very spectacular pass but as it was so outstretched but we could at least see the Annapurna mountain range After an apple a Chapati and a Mars we started to descend 1400 meters Three hours later we arrived at New Tibetan Hotel Lodge The village contains of 5 hotel lodges and all seem to be building new for this season thus once again we live at a construction site but a very nice one One of the houses under construction seems to be a dining hall But as it is not ready we have had dinner in the kitchen watching the owners and our guides and porters cook over an open fire

that The pass Larke La we are going over is located at 5106 m a s l and from there on it is downhill back to civilization This also means longer treks and not just the short morning trek we ve had for the last days The rest house is located below a huge moraine at 4400 m well above how high any of us ever has been before but so far no signs of altitude sickness The acclimatization plan seems to have worked well We do however fell a sudden drop in temperature the difference between sun and shadow day and night is stark with a powerful wind chill To make matters worse the afternoon clouds completely cover the few houses here so it quite humid as well Suddenly we are using all the warm clothes we hrm the porters have been carrying for the last 10 days After the hike up here our day continued like any other of the last few days lunch looking for a place to wash ourselves and our clothes reading in the sun and just relaxing Some random hikes in the surroundings didn t reveal much high mountains all around us and glaciers

lunch and the daily walk to the river to wash ourselves we spent the afternoon doing pretty much nothing at all Reading books ponder along back and forth through the small village watching dzopas go by drinking tea playing cards and watching children play And for the sake of good order when being so close to the Tibetan border we had to try the famous Tibetan tea Interesting experience Imagine

time we started to see glimpses of the really high mountains today If we ve understood things right we ve seen parts of Manaslu Mt already but the highest peak is supposedly hiding either behind some other peaks or in the clouds During the last three days we ve moved up in altitude from about 1400 m to about 3200 m asl and it s not only the culture that s been changing We ve also walked through quite varying flora From humid rain forest and jungle like environments in the beginning to more Scandinavian like surroundings Yesterday we came across pine forests lichens fern leaves and oak trees and today we ve been walking through more agricultural land with barley cabbage and apple trees growing everywhere In other words almost like home Almost We also seem to have left donkey land behind us and since this morning we ve been mainly sharing the trail with dzopa a cross between a cow and a yak They re definitely a lot bigger than the donkeys and with big nasty horns for sure Better be nice to those Today s highlight except for getting the views of the really big peaks was
