on the people and their culture The Tibetan influence is obvious in clothes religion Buddhist as opposed to Hindu before and in some ways also the spices in the food It should be said that the food itself is the same Dal Bhat or variations of fried rice or noodles For those of you who wonder yes the trek isn t only red roses and rainbows The guide book said it is a challenging trek and it is The days are long and at least I look forward to each rest and the possibility to wiggle my toes outside the boots We all have put tape on the feet to minimize blisters or as a precaution Although no one is ill the stomachs behave differently than back home this could be caused by the change in diet of course The climate also seems to take its toll on our boots Leather and rubber are separating here and there and my old trustworthy boots for the last 10 years have decided to separate boot and sole Luckily I brought a pair of trainers which I will use to save the boots until we reach the snow at high altitude The last

built of stone at least 100 years ago according to our guide Fortunately the deep valley offered shadow at least until lunch It is impressive to see the loads that the Nepali people carry on their backs Women with beautiful colorful dresses carrying big baskets filled with food potatoes crops rice and on top of the load their children Or men carrying among other things building material or mattresses while

and from that point of view this might have been the two healthiest days of my life The hand disinfectant I use every now and then probably expose my body to more alcohol than the small whisky we take in the evening and the food is probably as organic and local as can be found anywhere Looking at the map the trek today seemed very easy just a few kilometers in distance and roughly 300 meters of altitude difference The reality was a bit different though with probably only 10 minutes of walking on flat ground and the rest has been up and down over proper bridges and make shift bridges stairs cut out in the mountain side or built with rocks apparently something donkeys aren t very fond of and slippery slopes high above the river The views are simply breathtaking and after a while we almost OD on beautiful landscapes with waterfalls everywhere I wonder if James Cameron didn t visit this valley when he made up the scenery for Avatar There are more green colors than I ve seen before and somehow the steep mountain sides are filled with rice terraces Tonight we sleep at Shangri La

  • Arughat Bazar to slightly beyond Soti Khola - Manaslu Trekking 2012 - Daily Dispatches
for real on the trek around Manaslu And of course it was stunning from the very beginning Lush forests bright green rice terraces small villages along the trail and a wild river on our right when walking along the valley The key word for today would probably be hot though Very hot Extremely hot at times Good to know that polar fleeces beanies and mittens are packed when you re sweating along in some 30 degrees Guess it s not only altitude sickness to watch out for on this trip but also heat stroke But again very beautiful and worth every second of it After lunch in Soti Khola we experienced some local traffic jam just like you would in any other country around peak hours Only differences were that peak hour seemed to be at around 2 pm and the vehicles were donkeys Stubborn ones At around 3 pm we arrived at Namaste Hotel Lodge and quickly chose the two rooms with the amazing view of the valley The afternoon was then spent doing pretty much nothing after having washed ourselves and our soaked clothes Life could definitely be worse than reading books and drinking coffee in the shade

  • Kathmandu to Aarughat - Manaslu Circuit Trek - Manaslu Trekking 2012 - Daily Dispatches
We were pretty happy in our Toyota Land Cruiser when watching one of the overloaded buses ahead of us leaning more then what s expected from a bus Shortly afterwards we got stuck and had to leave our car for the first time Continuing the road didn t look good so we decided to stay for lunch in a small village We got a typical Nepali lunch with chicken on the plate but also running around our feet After lunch we drove 50 meters and got stuck and had to push the car The driver started to look a bit worried After a reconnaissance tour it was clear that we could not continue Fortunately a local truck past by and we got a ride on top of the load Caroline has too much of safety thinking from work and didn t really feel that comfortable whereas Björn fell asleep We decided that the overfull bus from that morning really was nothing compared to our new experience As the truck didn t have the same destination as us we got off in a crossing and paused there until our porters which already where in Arughat Bazar came to help us and

we visited managed to remain a quiet haven and it was definitely worth the visit Although a fika halfway through the visits would probably have made the day even better After lunch at a nice roof terrace overlooking one of the stupas and some necessary shopping Ulrika decided she wanted a good photo of the traffic system and a policeman waving in the middle of an intersection Unfortunately she chose the intersection with the American Embassy in the other corner The eagle eyed security guards spotted her act and sent out an armed guard to pick her up and ask what the whole thing was about She did a good job at playing innocent and not understanding why there was an issue with the photo We all walked her back to the embassy where she was taken in for a lecture general questioning and removal of the offending photos All the while the rest of us had a nice chat with the guards and took a lot of photos in the other direction Lonely Planet strongly recommended a typical Tibetan restaurant which sounded like a good plan for the evening of course the idea of trying hot Tibetan beer Tongba

weren t planning to trek in jeans and havaianas and had also brought something looking like a proper sleeping bag we were dismissed for the afternoon Another walk around Thamal to see what bargains could be made and what souvenirs to fill up our bags with Undersigned found the origin of her dream rug we might be looking at some kind of shipping arrangement here after the trekking and we all had some good laughs at the creativity when it came to writing slogans and signs for selling Pashmina and Cashmere shawls Dear Human Just Feel Me and Your GF happy you happy were among our favourites We ve also been kindly introduced to the Nepalese traffic system which apparently is very similar to the Indian traffic system Kind of hard to see the system at all to be honest but must be our brains being too square On the first evening in the country we were treated with a traditional Nepalese dinner with cultural singing and dancing representing different regions and ethnic groups in Nepal Amazing outfits nice conversations and delicious food made the evening a memorable one As a side note on the way back from the restaurant
