  • Jomsom to Pokhara - Annapurna Circuit Trek - Round Annapurna Trekking 2013 - Daily Dispatches
000 foot shear drops inches beside our tires on a 1 lane road We rented a Jeep and Driver and started down despite the large bulge in the front left tire The driver and our Sherpa bantered something in Napalese looked at the bald spare tire on the roof and shrugged their shoulders before setting off Our road took us straight through the Kalhi Gandhaki Valley the deepest gorge in the world Picture the Grand Canyon and then multiply it 5 times deeper This valley sits between Dhuligiri and Annapurna two of the highest mountains on Earth so the drama of driving through it is substantial to say the least The road is as rough as you can possibly imagine and any description of it here would be insufficient Suffice to say we arrived in Pokhara after 8 hours of riding the Jackhammer of Death and ran for the safety of our Normal Nice Hotel The next day dawned clear and warm and we had a couple hours to kill before our flight to Kathmandu so Jojo and I walked the sidewalks of this gorgeous city admiring the views of Machupuchere a 7 000 meter mountain that stands above the city like a Giant This unclimbed peak is considered sacred by the Napalese so no climbing permits are ever approved and the climbing community respects this After a couple hours of shopping Jojo and Terry headed to the airport with their Guide and the same waiting game Stuck At The Airport started to unfold Thankfully the plane did arrive 1 5 hours late and a half hour later we were back in Kathmandu zipping through traffic with 10 000 horns blaring at the same time and people driving to the smallest spaces imaginable Anyone in North America complaining about traffic

  • Trek to Muktinath via Throng la pass - Annapurna Circuit Trek - Round Annapurna Trekking 2013 - Daily Dispatches
after about an hour we stopped in at the Thorong High Camp 4 500 meters for tea and hot water Continuing upward we soon passed the 5 000 meter mark under very cold wind chill factors At that altitude everyone moves slow and we were no exception In fact we moved so slow that our two Sherpas Ngawong and Rinji offered to help us get moving to say that these two gentlemen are awesome would be an understatement After what seemed like an eternity of uphill slogging through deep snow we arrived safely at Thorong La 5 416 meters A col or pass between two mountains TYhe views were out of this world Also there was 8 feet of slow around the top Tea House We snapped a few photos hugged and started to head down The descent turned epic with the warm temperatures and tons of snow as we would posthole up to our waist regularly and slide out of control constantly Plus the way down was not obvious Thanks again to our great Sherpas we arrived in the Holy Buddhist City of Muktinath 3 800 meters Jojo calls it Mukkisomething haha about 6 00 PM after 13 hours

  • Trek to Thorang Phedi - Annapurna Circuit Trek - Round Annapurna Trekking 2013 - Daily Dispatches
on this bright blue sunny day were magnificent but on the other hand the snow and mud made the trails very unpleasant and slowed us down onsiderably After 5 hours we arrived at Thorong Pheti at 4 500 meters and were pleasantly surprised that this was not a typical Tea House but rather the common area looked like a rustic ski lodge and Neil Young s music was playing away

  • Manang Rest Day - Annapurna Circuit Trek - Round Annapurna Trekking 2013 - Daily Dispatches
that Annapurna Base Camp received 4 feet of snow last week which would explain the hundreds of avalanche slides that we have had to cross Fortunately the weather has been stellar for us and the danger of avalanches is practically zero Yak Karkha is just over 4 000 meters or nearly 13 000 feet which is higher than most peaks in the Rockies and yet the Himalaya mountains tower over
