  • Manang Rest Day - Annapurna Circuit Trek - Round Annapurna Trekking 2013 - Daily Dispatches
the main path through town Yes we managed to find some treasures however we had to keep in mind that we need to carry everything up nearly 5000 feet and then back down before we see another car motorcycle or any motorized thing Actually it was so nice to spend a day far removed from anything motorized and almost no computer related activity there are few WiFi zones up here

Nepal As a spiritual person and one who adores hiking this was a perfect for her as well Today was the best and most trying day we have had We started in clear cold conditions at 2C leaving earlier than usual for the long walk from Pisang to Manang Our route was long but should have been easy as we were to follow the road the whole way The heavy snows that hit this area about the same time we started our trek were evident everywhere I lost count of how many avalanche cones we had to struggle over post holing into the snow up to our waist Terry managed to flip over on a downhill section and glissaded down quicker than anticipated By mid day the snow was melting as the temperatures climbed to 25C This provided another obstacle mud Endless mud that would make the West Coast Trail jealous Between slipping on icy snow and gooing through the mud we nearly missed the fact that we were walking at the base of many 7 000 meter goliaths Annapurna 4 Annapurna 3 Gangapurna and Tilicho Peak all dominated a 360 degree feast for the eyes and a view I

across some snow from an avalanche a few days back It must have snowed heavily here while it rained on us 2 000 lower 4 nights ago We then came across another avalanche cone and then another Soon our trail was covered in deep snow and we followed a narrow packed trail through snow and mud bogs for several kilometres As the trail continued to climb we joined the main road for the valley and it too was covered in snow but plowed In Nepal they shovel as they have no plows At a few spots the snow on either side of the road was literally 15 feet above our heads as we slipped and slid through these snow canyons until we finally reached Pisang This town was hard hit by this recent snow storm and even though it has been sunny and warm for the last 4 days the snow still comes higher than the windows of the tea houses and the main path through town is still sporting many large piles of snow We heard that some trekkers were turned back at this point last week but we are far more fortunate Jojo insists that is it her

what looked like the right path and informed us that the improbable trail on the side would offer a shortcut easier terrain or better views He was always very right There are a lot of trekkers out here from all over the world Israel Germany USA France England Netherlands Canada and for a change today we saw almost none of them mostly because of our Guide s excellent suggestions Once

road you can do that seeing a bunch of lizards sunning themselves on a large outcrop of rocks passing a few sets of Prayer Wheels and catching our first glimpse of two Himalayan Giants Annapurna 2 and Annapurna 4 both over 7 000 meters 22 000 feet Until now we have seen mountains about the size of the Adirondacks 5 000 feet and some the size of the Rockies back

right side of the valley that is the kind of road that you see wild movies made of it is steep bumpy potholed and there is no guardrail If you go off this narrow one lane road you drop 2000 feet to the class 5 rapids below maybe bouncing once along the way On our side of the valley we enjoyed countless tall waterfalls and narrow trails with almost as crazy drops to the river Khola below And the villages Holy smokes the cute wonderful colorful villages with their stores tea houses and rooming houses are super fantastic There are no roads though these towns only a stone walk way through the middle where locals greet you with a warm Namaste positive goodwill blessing and greeting along with clasped hands and a slight bow Some look Indian Napalese but increasingly the people are starting to look more oriental Tibetan Today Terry tried unsuccessfully to carry the 2 duffle bags and backpack that our Sherpa Porter Ringi carries everyday With the headband strapped across his forehead Terry lasted about 15 seconds on flat land now even more appreciative of the super human strength that Ringi produces every day Our day finished

  • Trek to Syange - Annapurna Circuit Trek - Round Annapurna Trekking 2013 - Daily Dispatches
led us through a bunch of up and down hill sections past lots of great school kids in uniforms and through some very scenic villages After crossing a suspension bridge and climbing some steep switchbacks which seemed to go on forever and drained us of our energy we were welcomed to the top with an extremely effective Cold Drinks sign which was incredibly good marketing in our opinion The only other excitement today was the beekeeper who insisted on servicing his bee hives while we were sitting down to lunch despite our warnings that Jojo is deathly allergic to the little buzzers With the lack of action we decided to keep marching to find another location to eat the rest of the day was unremarkable which means that the mountain views were unbelievably gorgeous We have a few rocky peaks in our vista however our guide Nawang Furi Sherpa tells us these are only hills not mountains despite being over 12 000 feet and crowned with snow and glaciers He assures us that we will know a Real Mountain when we see it in the coming days In the meantime we have found a cute little and clean hotel along

after some backtracking we were back on track Wandering through small roadless villages along the way was fantastic as was handing out candies to all the kids that ran up to greet us and the endless greetings of Namaste with all the residents of this magnificent valley Banana trees are everywhere as are Norfolk Pine Trees and Pot Yes Marijuana It grows like weeks around here yet nobody seems remotely interested Nobody seems to drink smoke watch TV what TV or play video games Every kid is outside playing with other kids what a novel concept and all the adults are busy plowing fields with oxen and a manual plow sweeping with a hand made broom or cutting grass from the mountain sides to carry home in massive bundles strapped to their heads to carry home for miles for their livestock s next meal Everyone works hard everyone is fit and everyone seems happy Huge smiles are always exchanged with each Namaste five hours after setting off we finally arrived at our destination in Ngadi Bazar where we secured a room had a hot shower and an awesome meal of basmati rice curried chicken and yummy veggies About the time
