keep Karen and Dennis the first WMS Camp II participants with us for a few more days We spent the morning practicing our ice climbing skills in the outskirts of the Icefall We are improving both in technique and stamina and we could actually enjoy the beautiful weather and the view of the avalanches going off around us In fact we inaugurated the deck chairs outside our dining tent sipping orange tang and admiring the view of the Icefall After a hearty lunch some of us did some laundry while the others rested After some reading and card games we had a very welcome visit from Melissa Arnot of the First Ascent team She inspired us to take a walk around the upper parts of Base Camp before dinner after threatening that too much rest would not only render us insufferably lazy but also give us quick growing potbellies We enjoyed a dinner consisting of mushroom soup vegetable spring rolls lasagne and pineapple rings whilst listening to Ray Charles After dinner we settled in our heavy duty down jackets and read our books wrote our diaries and updated our blog Tomorrow is Puja day as well as Nepali New Year

  • Everest Base Camp - The WMS Everest Expedition 2012 - The WMS Everest Experience 2012 - Daily Dispatches
For some of us this was our first exposure to ice climbing For all of us this was a difficult endeavor at 18 000 feet We all took our two turns on the ice wall improving enough to please our Sherpas and were released to late morning tea and another epic lunch After our soup grilled cheese sandwiches potato salad and spam we visited the Glacier Works exhibit GlacierWorks org This is a nonprofit led by David Breashears Here we saw contemporary photos matched with those taken by Mallory in 1921 and other early explorer photographers These photographs show the dramatic loss of ice during the 20th century This is concerning because these glaciers are the water supply for the region In the afternoon we received lectures on Avalanches of which we have heard two this evening High Altitude Illnesses like Cerebral and Pulmonary Edema and Lightning Injuries from our lecturers Dr Scott McIntosh and Dr Maria Nemethy one of the Himalayan Rescue Association doctors from Pheriche Dr Luann Freer gave us a tour of the Everest ER followed by case studies related to her 10 years experience running the Everest ER the highest elevation medical clinic in the world

even foxier moustache all our Sherpa wanted to color it black One of the highlights of my morning was meeting with First Ascent s Melissa Arnot Who had climbed Mount Everest to its summit on several occasions my hero Despite her busy schedule Melissa had also kindly shared advice regarding my gear for this climb as well as given me her lucky summit suit We trekked along with our fluffy four legged friends to the little mountain town of Thukla where we stopped for lemon tea and French fries with tons of sodium chloride We hiked up a steep trail to the chortens in memory of many Sherpa and climbers who had lost their lives climbing Mount Everest and other local mountains The mood at the memorial was somber and emotional as trekkers and climbers paid their respects to Scott Fisher Babu Chhiri Sherpa and others We then crossed a mellow trail into Lobuche En route to Lobuche Bob shook hands with Jim Whittaker the first American to summit Mount Everest in 1963 this is the 50th anniversary of his summit as well as rubbed shoulders with Dave Hahn for good luck Dave is the only American to have summitted Mount Everest over 10 times After a yummy lunch we hiked up to see the Khumbu glacier and amazing views of Kala Pathar Pumori Lingtren Khumbutse and Nuptse The rest of the evening was spent at our comfy Mother Earth lodge resting playing hearts and other card games while feasting on masala chai and biscuits Of note the Indian team from Pune were also with us at the lodge The great day ended with a tasty dinner and lots of laughs while selecting a list of entertaining flicks to watch at Everest base camp in the next few weeks to

of us from Lama Geshe We will carry these envelopes to the summit We were all very much impressed by the long list of renowned mountaineers whose photos decorated Lama Geshe s walls photos where they too held copies of the very same cards we had just received Enlightened and grateful we had a quick lunch consisting of Rama Noodle Soup and Hash Browns with Veg Eggs and Cheese Whilst we waited for our food Mingmar played a trick on all of us as the date requires He pretended to receive a phone call from two girls from another Peak Promotion group where they asked us to come over to another lodge for tea Chris was the only one nice enough to rush off to meet the ladies the rest of us were too focused on our coming lunch Once Chris returned quite confused and as he realized that he had been played for April Fools slightly annoyed the group decided to avenge him As retaliation we placed stones in all three of our Sherpas backpacks Unfortunately they were immediately discovered Three hours of hiking later we finally arrived in Dingboche 4300m 14080ft The thin air and beautiful views conspired
