  • Phortse (12,467 ft.) to Pheriche (13,911 ft.) - Lhotse Expedition - Daily Dispatches
an hour before Pheriche snow began to fall The trail out of Phortse ran along the North side of the Imja Khole River valley On my two previous treks to EBC I followed the main trail on the South side of the river This trail avoided much of the trekker and yak traffic found on the main trail Both Terri and I felt that this trail was much more picturesque It ran along very steep hillside with many steps up and down around rock buttresses Because of the lack of trees and vegetation the views were great We saw many deer pheasant and eagles Before lunch we stopped in upper Pangboche and visited Lama Geishe and got his blessing for our trek and climb It was fun to see my picture on his wall from my Everest climb in 2008 along with hundreds of other pictures I had stopped to see him in 2010 and gave him a picture of me holding his prayer card on the summit Maybe his blessing time will help me have a successful and safe climb on Lhotse We moved on to Shomare where we had lunch We have now joined the main trail when

of her strength back We still can move on up towards EBC via the more standard route The hike down will take about six hours We left t 9 30 AM and got to Phortse at 5 PM The going was slower than planned because there was a lot of up and down We took a long lunch which helped us continue on Throughout the day we had snow showers

  • Namche (11,306) to Dole (13,399) - Lhotse Expedition - Daily Dispatches
of Namche Once out of Namche the pace was still slow mainly due to the large number of trekkers and Zopkyo s a cross between a yak and a cow Terri was also not feeling very good due to the typical traveler s problem We left the main trail up to Everest Base Camp EBC shortly after Kyangjuma At this point the trail is much smaller with very few animals or people The trail climbed steadily with a few descents on up to Mong at 13 935 ft We stopped for lunch but Terri was not very hungry this section of the trail had been pretty hard on her Unfortunately the trail descended steeply after Mong down to the Dudh Koshi River losing about 1 000 ft As is often the case in the Khumbu you gain and lose elevation often At the bottom of this descent we entered the Goyko Valley The trail began to climb again on our way to Dole but not as steeply as the descent We moved along slowly gaining 1 400 ft reaching Dole at 2 30 PM Our lodge Himalaya was comfortable and the food was good Terri was very tired and not

  • Lukla - Lhotse Expedition - Daily Dispatches
little later with our Sherpa Pasang I arrived at Lukla a little after 8 AM My flight was not bad lots of clouds with little visibility until we made our final approach to the runway It suddenly broke clear and our landing went well Meanwhile our plan started to fall apart a bit The next flight with space only had room for one so on went Pasang on his way up to Lukla Wonchu made a quick decision to get Terri on a helicopter This was her first time on a helicopter The weather conditions had closed in even more than for my flight so her flight to Lukla was certainly memorable She said that all six of the passengers clapped for the pilot when they landed at Lukla When I got to Lukla I walked over to the lodge that Peak Promotion uses to stage gear trekkers and climbers after arrival at Lukla I got some tea and waited for the flight that would have Terri and Pasang on it At this point I did not know about the schedule change for getting Terri and Pasang up to Lukla Eventually Pasang arrived and sort did his best to explain what had happened Finally Terri ran into Pasang when he was heading over to the terminal a small building next to the top of the runway Now that we were all together again it was time to organize our two porters for the trip and head out Our destination for the day was a short walk about three hours down in elevation to Phakding 2610 We started out with a little sunshine but that quickly went away as clouds built up Before we got to Chheplung it started to lightly rain The intensity picked up for a while to a

plan was to meet the Krapf trekking group at the airport around 11 AM I had been working with this group for the past few months to help them set up their trip with Peak promotion At about 9 30 I got a call from saying that the Krapf flight was late and he would pick me up around 2 PM While waiting Terri and I walked over to Ram s office to pick up the mini video camera he had offered us for our trip It should be fun trying to use the camera on our trip It can be mounted to almost anything including a helmet Finally at about 2 PM Peak Promotion picked me up to go to the airport They finally arrived around 3 PM We got them loaded up and then dropped them off at the Yak and Yeti I walked back to our hotel and had a little more time to sort and pack At 6 15 Peak Promotion picked Terri and I up at our hotel for our group dinner with the Krapf group It was at a traditional Nepalese restaurant that included some traditional dancing and music Everyone seemed to have a
