  • Sightseeing in Kathmandu - Everest Base Camp Trekking and Camp II Experience - The WMS Everest Experience 2012 - Daily Dispatches
the monkeys to be cute some thought they were terrifying but everyone had a great time and enjoyed an amazing skyline view of Kathmandu and the giant stupa surrounded by prayer flags and prayer wheels We then visited Pashupatinath where we saw two traditional Hindu cremations in progress Our guide Argan explained that the ashes from the cremations go into the Bagmati River which later joins the Ganges a very holy river for the Hindu people We were entertained by some Holy Hindu Sadhus with painted faces and bodies dressed in robes one was dressed just like a monkey Finally we made it to our last stop at Boudhanath temple the largest stupa in Nepal We had lunch overlooking the square which was full of religious visitors street vendors and heaps of tourists We managed to make it out without losing anyone which is quite a feat with such a large group On the way home our bus driver showed us his mad driving skills managing to sneak by several vehicles in what seemed to be a one lane unpaved alleyway We made it back to the hotel unharmed and looking forward to beginning the trek the following morning Lukla

yaks too numerous to count and deep cloud filled valleys The group visited the Sherpa Museum at the crest of t hill into Namche and then hit the hot showers hard Everyone s oxygen saturation climbed remarkably and the night was one of deep sleep and preparation for today s hike to Lukla The weather was perfect today with sunny skies and a cool breeze It was another long day hiking and even though we were breathing thicker air the uphill s stretches were challenging The final push to Lukla was energized when we encountered scores of school children literally bounding up the same trails upon which we were traveling on their way home from school This evening we had the traditional farewell dinner and paid thanks to the wonderful sherpas and porters who guided and cared for us during this adventure Tomorrow morning we depart for Kathmandu where some of the group will continue their sightseeing prior to everyone gathering for the farewell dinner at Rum Doodle This has been a terrific experience and events were most appropriate for a medical group We saw firsthand how high altitude cold and fatigue can conspire to make a journey difficult and

  • Back to Pheriche from Base Camp  - Everest Base Camp Trekking and Camp II Experience - The WMS Everest Experience 2012 - Daily Dispatches
was an entirely different setting than we had encountered After another solid breakfast by the cooking crew we departed EBC to begin our journey back to Pheriche It remained overcast with light snow the entire day which made for comfortable hiking as we retraced our steps No question about it it s easier going down than up We left four of our colleagues at Base Camp in their quest to reach Camp 2 which should occur 4 days from now They re excited and so are we I m particularly proud of Ginger who persevered through her AMS and GI woes and has had a terrific two days We miss our friends who needed to cut their experience short because of medical maladies associated with high altitude but such things happen The walk down was beautiful with snow covered rocks the glacier to our left at the beginning and the broad expanse of the valley leading into Pheriche We were greeted again by Dr Rachel who is enthusiastic as ever about her work at the HRA clinic and life in general That is the way to be Although our group is now smaller it remains enthusiastic and we will make

  • Day 2 at Everest Base Camp  - Everest Base Camp Trekking and Camp II Experience - The WMS Everest Experience 2012 - Daily Dispatches
was warm and reflected off every surface making sunscreen a necessity Once we had taken all the photographs we could we went to the Everest ER for a tour of the facilities The tour didn t take long as we could barely fit the whole group in the tent but the small size belies the huge impact that modern medical care has made for the climbers and Nepali workers at EBC Lunch at the Mess Tent was excellent as usual and afterwards we finally got a chance to rest on our rest day After a couple of hours of free time we went in groups for a tour through David Breashears Rivers of Ice Base Camp Photo Exhibit Mr Breashears gave us a personal tour and explained the project his team had been involved in tracking the changes in the glaciers of the Himalayas In the evening the doctors from the Everest ER came by and we went over some case presentations We were joined by a pair of doctors from the WMS Summit team who have just descended from Camp 3 Lively and informative discussion ensued on a variety of wilderness medical topics Another excellent supper followed Those leaving

  • Everest Base Camp  - Everest Base Camp Trekking and Camp II Experience - The WMS Everest Experience 2012 - Daily Dispatches
in size and some are the size of small ponds There are 42 expedition teams here Each team has an area where they set up two man sleeping tents and dining tents In all there are about 2000 people here and hundreds of orange yellow and blue tents EBC may be the biggest village we have encountered since we left Lukla We were all warned not to stray from our particular camp without a Sherpa guide because the terrain is dangerous to navigate and crevasses exist below the frozen terrain The bathrooms were pointed out and it was explained only pee in the pee tent and only well you know the rest In an effort to keep EBC clean all solid waste is caught in large buckets and carried out by a porter to be buried in Gorek Shep After a very good lunch the food is much more palatable at EBC compared to the villages along the way we were assigned our tents and got settled Our tents are set up on the rocky terrain along the hills or next to the craters We all put on our warm clothes in anticipation of a cold night Nights fall to 12 degrees this time of year After we got settled Wongchu took a couple of us tent hopping to the other expedition tents We met the climbing group from India who kindly offered us some Indian delicacies We also met the medical personnel 2 docs and the climbing leader for the Austrian expedition EBC is truly an international village and everyone is very friendly We all gathered for a filling dinner before heading to out tents Some of us that stayed up late past 9 lol and were treated to a visit by David Breashears in the dining tent David
