  • Kala Patthar  - Everest Base Camp Trekking and Camp II Experience - The WMS Everest Experience 2012 - Daily Dispatches
that we will have during the trek The morning hike was comparatively easy as we only gained about 700 feet in elevation Tonight we are staying at about 16 700 feet On the way to Gorak Shep we came across a gentleman from Israel named Erez we had met a few days prior He had left his girlfriend in Tengboche when she had decided to turn back and let him go on without her She was going to go back to Lukla to wait giving him a ten day window to complete his dream of seeing Everest and making it to base camp He was a little unsure of his path and joined our group for half a day We parted ways in Pheriche a few days ago but we ran into him again today He had made it to EBC and he was elated Today was also his girlfriend s birthday and he asked us to wish her a special day by singing Happy Birthday to her while he recorded us Although everyone on the trail seems a little worn out all are very friendly After lunch Wongchu marched us up Kala Patthar which is 18 200 Those that made it to the summit were treated to spectacular views of Everest and base camp However it was by far the toughest trek since the trail was steep and the air is now very thin Every step makes you gasp for air And it was windy and very very cold however it was sweet when a Sherpa greeted us on the mountain with hot lemonade This is the highest we will go since base camp is lower at 17 200 We are all exhausted after this hike It has been a rigorous journey and all of us are feeling the

  • Halfway thru our trek to Everest Base Camp.  - Everest Base Camp Trekking and Camp II Experience - The WMS Everest Experience 2012 - Daily Dispatches
which was just over 15 000 ft After lunch we continued our steep ascent thru the Thukla Pass leaving all of us winded no matter our age or conditioning Thukla Pass has dozens of memorials to both Sherpas and mountaineers from all over the world who have lost their lives attempting to summit Everest The memorials consisted of stacks of stones prayer flags and bronze plaques one of them read Always Aim High The day was cold and grey matching the emotion that the memorials elicited in us all The rest of the trek towards Lobuche was gradual but frigid and the snow flurries began In total we ascended just over 2000 ft today and ended the day at about 16 000 ft Just as we were getting settled in with hot tea around the fire most of us under the persistent encouragement Wongchu took a brief acclimatization hike up the hill behind our teahouse The views were stunning We had a moment of sunshine that lit up the mountains that surrounded us in every direction We could see from our vantage point Kallapathar our destination tomorrow Pumori Nuptse Cholatse Cheangje which is in Tibet Lo la and the Khumbu

  • Trekking day 6 – a day of rest!! Or as Keith put it on our post breakfast hike – “rest days are a real bitch”- Everest Base Camp Trekking and Camp II Experience - The WMS Everest Experience 2012 - Daily Dispatches
13 800 feet to 14 800 feet was taxing for the entire team Sherpas accepted but the vistas were so spectacular we we re motivated to continue on We had spectacular views of Ama Dablam from the north side as well as distant views of Island Peak Lohtse peak 38 Makalu and Chophulu Chophulu is a very sacred mountain so that climbing is not permitted Returning to lunch and showers for many we we re extremely fortunate to visit the Himalayan Rescue Association clinic here in Pheriche The clinic is staffed by three volunteer physicians for 10 weeks in the summer and in the fall The physicians Maria Nemethy MD from Salt Lake City Magnus Johansson MD from Stockholm and Rachel Tullet MD from Christchurch showed us the clinic and Maria gave us a lecture on Altitude Related Illnesses Later in the afternoon all three physicians presented interesting informative cases from their recent clinical experience At dinner we we re joined by all three physicians and their clinic staff where we continued to share clinical cultural experiences Tomorrow we expect to awaken to another cool crisp morning surrounded by mountain views that frankly defy description in words Then we are

head and handand viewed gorgeous Buddhist paintings sculptures and statues covering every inch of the interior We stopped for lunch at Shomare and were presented with a lucky red string necklace by our fearless leader Wongchu Sherpa After all the blessings today we are all but guaranteed a safe journey The vistas today were amazing Ama Dabalam shadowed over us all day and we also glimpsed Island Peak late in the day The terrain evolved throughout the day from Pine and Rhodedendron forests to an ascent through tundra spotted with low growing juniper to completely barren alpine region that looked like the surface of Mars The rest of the trek will continue to be above the tree line alpine so we anticipate that it will be increasing wind and decreasing temperature In addition to the incredible vistas I saw the most incredible sight a porter carrying two Yak quarters down the mountain I no longer feel sorry for myself for halving to carry elk quarters Mark Another interesting situation occurred when we passed a Sherpa that was stumbling down the mountain in obvious discomfort because he was hurt at base camp when he fell in a crevasse He was fortunate to encounter a group of 20 docs on the trail and was assessed provided with some Tylenol and sent on his way The group also came to the aid of a young female trekker that was suffering from severe GI distress We are also doing two medical studies on the trek a leucine amino acid study and a Diamox trial For a bunch of medical professionals i e bad patients study compliance is surprisingly good Every morning those participating have their morning urine checked for adequate hydration and drink a chocolate protein drink to determine if leucine will help maintain

a dental therapist She provides basic services for the local people and runs the clinic mostly on donations hint hint As we trekked toward our first stop at Kengjuma we had our first views of Everest Ama Dablam Lhotse Nuptse which we were able to see for several hours until they became cloud covered We continued to descend to the Dud kosi River 3200 meters where we stopped for lunch in the town of Phungi tanga After lunch we began our ascent to Tengboche 3880 meters The climb after lunch was steep and challenging and lasted for about 2 hours Once we reached Tengboche we had tea and the hiked over a nearby hill 3916 meters to help acclimitization The hike was just before dusk and the air had a brisk feel In fact we saw snowflakes for the first time We were also standing in the clouds at the top of the hill and looking down on birds flying below Occasionally we see helicopters flying through the valley ostensibly transporting people from base camp in need of medical attention The air is definitely getting thinner and brisker but we are all doing well and the weather has been fantastic

seen towering over all the mountains far in the distance However Everest eluded us due to low hanging clouds over the mountains The hike was steep and steady but we all did well on this 1500 feet elevation gain On our descent to the other side of the mountain ridge we passed through a picturesque Nepalese village named Khumjung that means the green village All the structures in the village

that comprise the native Nepalese During the trek the groups passed through many Sherpa villages and were met along the trail with Sherpa children with the traditional Namaste greeting The River was breathtakingly beautiful with glacier blue water and giant boulders spread all over the river bed and along its shores indicating the power and force of the raging water There are no fish in the water because as Bhanu and I can attest the water is ice cold from glacier and snow melt We passed over several suspension bridges that swayed with the wind but seemed steady enough even when lines of yaks and mules crossed along with us The trail serves the Sherpa highway connecting all the villages throughout the valley from Lukla to Everest Thus we often have to step to the side to let caravans of yaks and mules loaded with supplies to pass Hundreds of Sherpa carrying three times their weight also navigate the trial from village to village The weather today was perfect sunny and warm The last three or four hours of the trek was very challenging uphill that was probably good training for what s to come As soon as the sun

a Mr Toads wild ride in the mighty Himalayan mountain range After a very heart racing landing into Lukla with amazement in our hearts we soaked up the visuals that we have only seen in pictures We started our trek in Lukla at an elevation of 9200 feet after a great breakfast on to Phakding which is our destination for the night It was surreal that we were in the
