  • ASME | The Penn Stater Magazine
executive editor of Field Stream which won a National Magazine Award last night Field Stream won the general excellence award as the nation s single best magazine in its circulation category I sent Mike a quick e mail this morning to say Woo hoo and he wrote back about having attended the ceremony in New York last night I almost but not quite embarrassed myself yelling But what the hell this was the magazine s first and the Pop Sci editor who was sitting in front of me should have most of his hearing back by this afternoon anyway It s so hard to overcome the biases against the field sports in ad sales and marketing and especially in contests such as this Other semifinalists in our category included Vogue The New Yorker and others So for us to even be noticed by the judging panel we have to be absolutely perfect in every aspect of the magazine And after 113 of years of publishing it finally paid off Those of us who are magazine junkies tend to geek out over the National Magazine Award winners lists I was really pleased to see that the Esquire article called The Things That Carried Him a poignant and powerful piece about transporting the body of a deceased soldier home from Iraq won for feature writing I highly recommend reading that article if you haven t already And I ve printed to read later two other award winning pieces that I had heard about but never read one from Bicycling magazine about car accidents and bicyclists called Broken it won for public interest reporting and one from Rolling Stone on the late David Foster Wallace it won for profile writing That s the thing about great magazine writing I have only a passing
