    Share this Email Print Facebook Twitter Pinterest Google LinkedIn Tumblr Like this Like Loading June 29 2015 at 3 56 pm amyjdowney 3 comments President Barron s Comments on the NCAA Settlement Penn State president Eric Barron addressed the media for about 20 minutes this afternoon talking about the agreement that repeals the NCAA s sanctions against Penn State Here are a few of his comments I m pleased we can close this chapter he said and look ahead to the important challenges and opportunities that face Penn State In addressing a few key details of the agreement he mentioned that the 60 million fine imposed on Penn State remains in the state of Pennsylvania first and foremost Of that 48 million goes to the Commonwealth and the other 12 million will remain at Penn State to create an endowment which is a long term investment in programs to help eradicate child abuse Asked about the fate of the Paterno statue and other calls for Penn State to honor Joe Paterno s career Barron said Those who know me know that I prefer not to talk about things that will be a topic of discussion publicly before chatting with lots of people But there will be a time and place Asked what becomes of the Big Ten sanctions including the sharing of football bowl revenues Barron pointed out that the Big Ten is a party to the Athletics Integrity Agreement that will be renegotiated under the terms of the settlement I will discuss it with my fellow presidents Barron said They re expecting that discussion to occur Barron was asked if with the 2012 consent decree now erased this might be a good time for academia to take a fresh look at the NCAA and its powers Hindsight is a fascinating thing Barron began I ve talked to many of my fellow presidents and did so to my ACC representative when I was at Florida State suggesting that the NCAA moved too quickly At the same time they came to their decisions with the best possible motive of not wanting to have such things occur and with the notion that they had a responsibility to look at institutional control I see little purpose in trying to fault them He was asked to talk about how much communication there was with the Board of Trustees in the negotiations with state officials and the NCAA He wouldn t say much except that I hear frequently from my trustees and that s a good thing but negotiation of details is first and foremost with the attorneys Then when you have a sense of what agreement is possible that s the best time to bring it to the board Then they can make the best possible decision And as you can see the vote was unanimous He added that the negotiations were going on right up to that moment presumably meaning right up until the start of the trustees meeting this afternoon Asked again

    in her undergraduate days at San Jose State As a volunteer with Special Olympics and other similar programs on campus she often worked with disabled athletes and others with physical challenges She remembers teaching a young boy in a wheelchair how to swim To this day she gets choked up recalling the day he was able to first move around in a pool without a wheelchair He was so excited about being able to move for the first time she says He looked up at the trophies and said Do you think I could win those I tear up just thinking about it right now I said yes and at that point I knew that people like myself had to make those opportunities for them and if I did that of course yes would be the answer for him Jordan displays a similar passion toward her current athletes around 15 at the moment a number she is always looking to increase as more and more athletes find out about Penn State s programs We caught up with the coach late last fall as she supervised a practice for Brett Gravatt Baren Berg a former wrestler who was injured during a deployment and a handful of other athletes Penn Stater How busy are you with the Ability Athletics program Teri Jordan We are really busy October was tremendously busy with the program with Diversity Awareness Month Every weekend we were busy Also this year the ECAC Conference is now putting in three events for disability into the conference swimming track and field and wheelchair basketball and we have all three programs I have only one swimmer but maybe Brett will be my second swimmer We have a lot of quality athletes and we have a lot that are just participating to

back from a 20 point second half deficit to dampen Penn State s first game at Rec Hall since 1996 Still it was a great afternoon for the fans who packed into the old barn if you weren t there you can find a terrific bunch of photos from Mark Selders here The women s volleyball team enjoyed a more successful weekend on the road beating Michigan State and long time rival Stanford to guarantee a return to the NCAA Final Four Penn State will face Washington on Thursday in Seattle for a chance to play in the national title game I thought the contrast in photos Onward State ran in back to back stories on the hoops and volleyball games was worth noting Also in action this weekend The Lady Lions got back on track after a tough week with a 66 58 win over No 20 Texas A M and the No 2 wrestling team dominated No 6 Ohio State 31 6 Making their case At a pretrial hearing Tuesday in Harrisburg attorneys for Graham Spanier Tim Curley 76 78g and Gary Schultz 71 75g will argue that the cases against them should be thrown out At issue is the role of Cynthia Baldwin 66 74g the former university counsel and the question of whether Baldwin was representing them or the university in front of a grand jury in 2010 You can read more here Ready or not We knew the rumors were coming and with Penn State s football season over we didn t have to wait long CBS Sports writer Jason La Canfora reported Sunday that according to pro and college sources Bill O Brien is ready to return to the NFL Is it true Probably only O Brien his family and his agent know for sure but you can expect to hear much more road in the NCAA tournament The women s volleyball team finished its regular season with a four set victory over long time nemesis Nebraska in a match up of two Top 10 programs in Lincoln and it will as usual open the NCAA tournament at home 7 30 p m Friday against LIU Brooklyn The men s basketball team advanced to the final of the Barclays Center Classic but fell to Ole Miss 79 76 despite 23 points from D J Newbill Tournament MVP Maggie Lucas led the women s basketball team to the championship of the Junkajoo Jam in the Bahamas where the players also scored some quality time with some friendly dolphins Happy Birthday to Mike the Mailman via pennstate Legal update A couple of months ago former president Graham Spanier requested a bill of particulars regarding the charges he is facing in the wake of the Sandusky scandal The prosecution answered last week and although most of Spanier s requests were denied the lawyers did provide a list of what they called Spanier s false statements in his April 2011 testimony before a grand jury investigating Jerry Sandusky 67 71g Charlie Thompson of The Patriot News does a nice job here summarizing the legalese Next up in the case against Spanier Gary Schultz 71 75g and Tim Curley 76 78g a hearing on several pre trial matters including the defense s motion to quash

    toward her current athletes around 15 at the moment a number she is always looking to increase as more and more athletes find out about Penn State s programs We caught up with the coach late last fall as she supervised a practice for Brett Gravatt Baren Berg a former wrestler who was injured during a deployment and a handful of other athletes Penn Stater How busy are you with the Ability Athletics program Teri Jordan We are really busy October was tremendously busy with the program with Diversity Awareness Month Every weekend we were busy Also this year the ECAC Conference is now putting in three events for disability into the conference swimming track and field and wheelchair basketball and we have all three programs I have only one swimmer but maybe Brett will be my second swimmer We have a lot of quality athletes and we have a lot that are just participating to be the very best they can be PS What role did Penn State play in getting the ECAC to adopt sports into the conference TJ Hopefully we will be the leaders of it since this is the first year I myself have met with all the ECAC head people What they re going to do is integrate us right into the able bodied track meet And the able bodied swim meet So it s not a matter of when it s happening It s just a matter of how many other schools will be there We re one of the leading programs in the country for track and field University of Illinois has more wheelchair track runners They have no field events We d probably kill them with all the field event points but they d kill us with all the wheelchair track events So at this point I don t know if Illinois or us would win And I understand Illinois is coming into the ECAC next year just because they want to compete against us PS Do you ever see a day where this is incorporated into Big Ten TJ Oh yeah I think that s probably in the next two years PS How do athletes get to the program TJ One way is we went to the junior national event last year with Brett because Brett s so young At that junior national meet we met all the top junior high school athletes in the county PS What is biggest hurdle to overcome with athletes and potential athletes TJ I don t have any that think it s too hard All these guys want an opportunity to compete It may be tough on them but if they want to get good they re gonna work hard PS What kind of feedback do you get from families of these athletes TJ They seem to just see a difference in how happy their athletes are and all that They re very pleased with where they re at PS Do you ever think of

  • Doug West on One of His ‘Best Coaches’ | The Penn Stater Magazine
