scandal broke my husband and I were heading out of town for a long weekend away I m not a good passenger so I was distracting myself by scrolling through Twitter on my phone as he drove and that s how we got the news on Friday afternoon Awful we both agreed Our lazy Saturday morning was interrupted when both of our phones started buzzing like crazy friends and colleagues were alerting us to perjury charges and a shockingly graphic grand jury presentment We were floored And we knew that although we weren t in State College we weren t really on vacation anymore The thing about being a journalist is this You can t really turn it on and off News doesn t keep hours and often my best laid plans go awry Just ask the guy I was dating the semester I was a candidate at The Daily Collegian You used to be normal he said not unkindly and then you joined the Collegian I wouldn t have it any other way It s also not a coincidence that I married another journalist who better to understand how you think and work By Sunday everyone at the B B s communal breakfast table was waiting for the two writers from Penn State to explain everything to them As if that were possible They d seen the story on the front page of the New York Times We got pelted with more questions Monday morning When we checked out the owner gave us more Share this Email Print Facebook Twitter Pinterest Google LinkedIn Tumblr Like this Like Loading January 5 2012 at 4 10 pm Lori Shontz 1 comment Nice Work by The Daily Collegian This video produced by two staffers at The Daily Collegian Krista Myers and Katherine Rodriguez has gotten a lot of play on Twitter recently and it s easy to see why Titled We Are Penn State Students Reactions to the Events in Happy Valley the video is shot in arresting black and white and it features Penn State students talking about what the past six weeks have been like and why they are still loyal to their school It runs for a little over four minutes and it s well worth your time This seems like a good time as well to salute the work that all of the Collegian journalists have done over the past month I know for a fact that some of them haven t been to class quite as often since the first week of November and I truly hope their professors took the circumstances into account There are some things you can t learn in a classroom and covering a story like this is one of them These journalists were in the middle of everything asking questions at the attorney general s news conference being pepper sprayed while covering the riot summing up Joe Paterno s 61 year career at the University with a special section on a day

the charges I think she s arguing against a rush to judgement which will happen anyway by many and has in the past ruined many lives of good people The former Duke lacrosse coach could speak about that 6 anonymous November 8 2011 at 11 05 am I think what we as alumni need the Penn Stater to cover is something relating to the story but not the story itself Do we have any Penn Stater s that are coming up with new therapeutic treatments for children who have gone through child abuse Do we have any Penn Stater s who have founded organizations that advocate for child abuse Do we have any Penn Stater s who are studying how to identify if an individual is at risk of becoming sexual deviant Do we have any Penn Stater s conducting research on identifying the signs of sexual abuse If there is any way we can show that Penn State is more than this case and that we have an opportunity to learn something from this situation that is the route I would take We as Penn Stater s are better than this horrible incident and we desperately need to read that right now 7 Crystal November 8 2011 at 3 16 pm Anon here s something that the Law School and Medical School collaborated on recently fitting that description http lookoutforchildabuse org 8 Denise November 8 2011 at 5 05 pm I am Proud to be a Penn Stater 93 will continue to be PROUD even when all of the dust around this scandal settles I am saddened by the accusations and feel sick that this is happening at my ALMA Mater What I learned at Penn State the friendships I made have sustained 20 years after graduating will not be shaken by this scandal My husband 93 I will continue to share our Pride in being Penn Staters with our 2 children both boys 13 8 respectively We will continue to cheer on our Nittany Lions on game day with PRIDE I will not let this scandal tarnish what I know is PENN STATE Only Alumni understand what the words WE ARE PENN STATE really means Truth be told it is not 1 man who defines that for me I have already shared the reports of what happened with my 13 year old son The terrible reality of life I am using this as an opportunity to have an open discussion on what can happen even with people we know trust In addition I have personally volunteered at fundraising events with the Second Mile and while I am outraged at Jerry Sandusky and what he may have done to those boys I hope that the Charity Work Personal dedication of so many people to the Second Mile continues to be appreciated by the many beneficiaries of the Organization 9 Barry November 8 2011 at 5 28 pm Sorry Bob It s not my role to substantiate every media report

outrage in the scandal Others think it s not quite so clear cut but they re distressed at how things were handled And as the Altoona Mirror which hasn t been easy on Paterno wrote in an editorial No one wanted Paterno s magnificent career to end the way it did Said Fata I think part of the reason too is that he was fired so abruptly we as alumni never really got a chance to give him the big goodbye that I think a lot of us wanted to do He had no idea whether anyone was following through until Jay Paterno tweeted Wednesday afternoon Saw boatloads of birthday cards for Joe at the house realized that I d better get him one before tomorrow I wasn t sure how many cards equal a boatload so I checked with the post office Someone who must remain anonymous said that an entire tray of mail about 500 cards went to the Paterno residence on Wednesday and that three trays went Thursday on Paterno s actual birthday So it s at least a couple thousand cards Another birthday tribute to Paterno came from about 400 of his former players who have signed this letter calling for due process for Joe Paterno and the Penn State community At this link it s possible to add your comments Lori Shontz senior editor Share this Email Print Facebook Twitter Pinterest Google LinkedIn Tumblr Like this Like Loading Related Entry filed under Uncategorized Tags Jay Paterno Scott Faha More on Sam Griffith Am I Too Late for a Gift Suggestion 1 Comment Add your own 1 The Best of The Penn Stater Blog 2011 The Penn Stater Magazine January 10 2012 at 11 01 am 8 A Blizzard of Birthday Cards for Joe Paterno Leave
