    a significant early atlas issued by Mathew Carey the first American to specialize in cartographic publishing Carey an Irish immigrant set up an elaborate cottage system of craftsmen for engraving printing and coloring his maps utilizing the best independent artists directed to a common end Carey is important then not only for the excellent maps he produced but for his setting the pattern for American map publishing to be followed by the likes of John Melish and Henry S Tanner The Pocket Atlas contained 19 small folding maps of the different states and territories in the United States Carey s maps contain the most accurate and detailed information on the country and he updated his maps for each edition of his atlas 275 Samuel Lewis Pennsylvania From A New and Elegant General Atlas by Aaron Arrowsmith and Samuel Lewis Philadelphia Baltimore Washington Petersburg and Norfolk Samuel Lewis 1804 8 x 9 5 8 Engraving by D Fairman Outline color Very good condition An excellent map from an early American atlas The maps were the works of Aaron Arrowsmith one of the foremost cartographers of his era and Samuel Lewis one of the leaders in the nascent American cartographic field This map of Pennsylvania is a fine example of Lewis output Detail of the settlement in the state along with topographical information is neatly portrayed Roads and counties are also shown A fine example of some of the best American cartography of the period 175 Mathew Carey Pennsylvania Philadelphia M Carey son 1814 11 1 2 x 18 1 4 Engraving Original outline color Very good condition An important map of Pennsylvania by Mathew Carey one of the seminal figures in early American Cartography Published during the War of 1812 this map is from Carey s Atlas which represented the best American cartographic work of the period Carey an Irish immigrant established the first American specialized cartographic publishing firm He set up an elaborate cottage system of craftsmen for engraving printing and coloring his maps utilizing the best independent artists directed to a common end Carey is important then not only for the excellent maps he produced but for his setting the pattern for American map publishing to be followed by the likes of John Melish and Henry S Tanner This map of Pennsylvania Carey s home state is a fine example of his work Topographical information is neatly portrayed including towns rivers mountains and roads The counties are named and indicated by light pastel coloring Longitude is given both with a prime meridian at London and at Philadelphia 825 Pennsylvania From A Complete Historical Chronological and Geographical American Atlas Philadelphia H C Carey I Lea 1822 1825 12 x 17 3 4 map 16 3 4 x 20 1 2 full sheet Very good condition In 1822 Henry Charles Carey and Isaac Lea published their American Atlas This volume was based on Emmanuel Las Cases Atlas Historique of 1803 with updated maps and text modified by Carey a political economist

    edition of the same map as above 325 Henry S Tanner A New Map of South Carolina with its Roads Distances From Universal Atlas Philadelphia Carey Hart 1844 11 x 13 1 4 Engraving Original hand color With inset of Charleston in the lower left Very good condition A strong and beautifully crafted map of South Carolina by the great American cartographer Henry Schenck Tanner In 1816 Henry his brother Benjamin John Vallance and Francis Kearny formed an engraving firm in Philadelphia Having had experience at map engraving through his work with John Melish Tanner conceived of the idea of compiling and publishing an American Atlas which was begun in 1819 by Tanner Vallance Kearny Co Soon Tanner took over the project on his own and thus began his career as cartographic publisher The American Atlas was a huge success and this inspired Tanner to produce his 1833 Universal Atlas of more manageable size This atlas contained excellent maps of each state focusing on the transportation network including roads railroads and canals Carey Hart reissued their version of the Tanner Universal Atlas in 1844 including this map of South Carolina 275 A New Map of South Carolina with its Canals Roads Distances from place to place along the Stage Steam Boat Routes Philadelphia S Augustus Mitchell 1849 11 5 8 x 14 1 8 Lithographic transfer from engraved plate Full original hand color Very good condition A strong detailed map of South Carolina issued by S Augustus Mitchell of Philadelphia In 1846 S Augustus Mitchell purchased the rights to the important Universal Atlas by H S Tanner Mitchell had lithographic transfers made of the engraved maps and issued his version of Tanner s Universal Atlas with maps that were essentially unchanged other than process and a new border Mitchell then immediately started to make some changes to the maps mostly changing the copyright and publisher information and he began his own series of editions of the Universal Atlas This map from the 1849 edition of that atlas like those of the earlier editions is excellent focusing on the transportation network including roads railroads and canals Details are clearly presented including towns rivers mountains political boundaries and the transportation information Tables at the right list the steamboat routes from Savannah to both Charleston and Augusta An inset map of Charleston with a location key is included in the bottom left corner A fascinating South Carolina document 275 A New Map of South Carolina with its canals roads distances Philadelphia Thomas Cowperthwait Co 1851 11 1 2 x 14 Lithographic transfer from engraved plate Original hand color Very good condition With inset of Charleston In 1850 the rights to the Mitchell atlas were sold to Thomas Cowperthwait Co who reissued the map of South Carolina without any changes This copy was issued the following year and with Mitchell s name removed 225 J H Colton South Carolina New York J H Colton Co 1856 13 x 16 Lithograph Full original hand coloring

map of Tennessee from the mid nineteenth century published by Thomas Cowperthwait Co This firm took over the publication of S Augustus Mitchell s important Universal Atlas in 1850 and they continued to produce up dated maps that were amongst the best issued in the period This map shows Tennessee at an important time in its development The map is filled with myriad topographical details including rivers towns lakes and political borders This firm s maps are especially known for their depiction of the transportation routes of the states and this map is no exception The transportation infrastructure was extremely important at this period of increased immigration and travel in the American mid west This information is clearly depicted including rail lines steamboat routes canals and roads In the lower right are tables showing distances along steamboat routes through the state Included are two inset maps showing the areas around Nashville and Knoxville The map has a striking appearance with warm hand coloring that well compliments the clear presentation For its fascinating detail and decorative appeal this is an excellent Tennessee document 275 J H Colton Kentucky and nineteenth century the firm founded by S Augustus Mitchell dominated American cartography in output and influence This fine map is from one of his son s atlases and it shows Kentucky and Tennessee in the 1860s Towns rivers roads and other topographical information are clearly shown and the counties are shaded with contrasting pastel colors A fine decorative border surrounds the map and the whole     is shown next to which is Salt Lake City Mormon Set which had just been settled in 1847 Early settlements and a coastal road are illustrated in California and the old Spanish trail between Santa Fe and Los Angeles is also indicated Of further interest is the prominent depiction of the Oregon Trail shown snaking from present day Colorado to the Columbia River The entire region north of Utah and California appears as the Oregon Territory which it remained until the Washington Territory was created in 1853 Thomas Cowperthwait Co continued to revise this map for in 1851 they came out with a further up dated map retitled A New Map of the State of California and with more information provided on the counties of the territories and state This is a fascinating and historical important map one of the first to show the new political situation in the west after the Compromise of 1850 875 S Augustus Mitchell County and Township Map of Utah and Nevada 1880 14 1 4 x 21 5 8 Hand color Very good condition A new map of Utah and Nevada from the S Augustus Mitchell firm of Philadelphia Rich in detail with much topographical information the map also shows development of the plat system of surveying just beginning in the new states west of the Mississippi River Oddly the map does not include all of the southern portion of Nevada below the 37th parallel 95 Utah New York Arbuckle Bros Coffee Company 1889 Ca 3 x 5 Chromolithograph by Donaldson Brothers Very good condition From a delightful series of maps issued by the Arbuckle Bros Coffee Company This firm was founded by John and Charles Arbuckle of Pittsburgh PA They developed a machine to weigh fill seal and label coffee in paper packages
