of incandescent bulbs in mind I remember running into Eugene Jarvis who in addition to creating video games such as Robotron was also once a pinball programmer at Pinball Expo one year when he was playing a Star Trek The Next Generation pin that had been outfitted with LED lighting I asked him what he thought It s too fast he said it messes with the lighting effects I have hopes that LEDs can be tweaked for slower on off cycles and more natural color so that they can become a worry free drop in replacement for incandescent bulbs We re getting close What do you think the cost per play of new pins should be My gut feeling is 0 50 but I suspect a dollar is more fair if we want to encourage operators to put them on site It s a tough balance make it too expensive and people won t play but make it too cheap and it s not worth the extra maintenance and attention that pinball machines require What annoys you the most about pinball on location The condition of the pins There s no worse feeling than putting in your money and discovering one of the flippers doesn t work With a video game if it s broken it s usually obvious immediately Pins on the other hand can be sneaky How can we get more new people interested in playing pinball This one s easy the new generation of pinball emulator games such as The Pinball Arcade are excellent introductions to the game They allow kids from the video generation to learn about pinball develop an understanding of how to play and even master the ruleset on a particular game Of course playing with a game controller and a screen is never going to be the same as playing on a real physical pinball machine They re going to want the real thing eventually I ve talked to the guys who programmed The Pinball Arcade and they ve said it s generated a lot of interest in real pins So much so in fact that Gary Stern has told them that prices for used Ripley s Believe or Not pins had skyrocketed since that machine was included in The Pinball Arcade Do you think we need to return to simpler and easier to understand pinballs No There s obviously a fine balance between making a game intuitive enough for someone to walk up and play while also making it challenging enough to keep people coming back for more tries Recent games have done a fairly good job of providing a deep ruleset for veteran players to work through while still allowing novice users to bang on the main playfield toy and achieve some sense of accomplishment Pinball games are more and more becoming home gameroom toys more than coin op machines A deep ruleset helps keep the game interesting for home users How do you think pinball manufacturers can make a more

some point he realized that he needed help and asked Franco At that time I was finishing school but still helped however I could and started working full time in 1968 Natale from a Zaccaria Pinball publicity brochure in the 80s At the time pinballs were mostly being imported from the USA but due to an economic crisis in Italy their cost increased a lot and so we decided to start refurbishing used pinballs with new graphics applied Lorenzo a friend of ours introduced us to this idea Do you remember the name of the first model that you decided to freshen up in the sixties The first pinball we reconditioned was called Red Show if I remember correctly The Internet Pinball Database says that the first production model Zaccaria released was Strike Is this true I m sure that the Strike was produced after that one A brochure for Zaccaria s Strike The company developed rapidly and began selling to other operators in Italy By 1970 we had started making completely new machines continuously improving on our ideas and the quality of the machines themselves On the production line inside the Zaccaria factory We started exporting to other European countries in 1975 and soon after to the rest of the world as well Japan Australia America etc Pinball Champ was the first pinball in the world that talked to the player in four different languages It was a real success for us The flyer for Zaccaria s Pinball Champ Even the best businessmen cannot build a successful business without a creative force behind them and Lorenzo Rimondini was one of the driving forces behind your company I know he died of cancer in the mid eighties but how was it to work with him In the 70s when we started the production of pinballs Lorenzo immediately showed he was an excellent artist His method of work was to always seek perfection Lorenzo Rimondini at work picture courtesy Tilt it He designed everything by hand which took a long time Each design each model was composed of twelve colours and then twelve separate designs components such as the backglass and the playfield each one hand drawn with pen and ink A single pinball art package took two months to design and Lorenzo often worked on them long into the night All this work was rewarded by appreciation from the customers and even today his artwork is highly regarded by collectors as he worked with such passion Unfortunately he was unlucky and his life was cut short I am writing these few lines with nostalgia about those beautiful times Lorenzo left us with wonderful memories Did anyone in particular take over designing pinballs from an artistic standpoint after Rimondini or it was more of a team effort After our exit from the company Lorenzo continued development of two or three further models I m not sure about the names He only stopped due to his passing What was the name of

look like they were made in someone s garage Where would you like to see the pinball machine technology go in the future I ll leave that up to those who actually play these things Do you like mods for pinball machines In general no I m more of a purist How do you like new lighting technology I like it although games like The Wizard of Oz can be a bit overwhelming It certainly makes the older games a bit dull looking though What do you think the cost per play of new pins should be I don t really care What annoys you the most about pinball on location Condition and playability of the games would be tops How can we get more new people interested in playing pinball Media attention would be the biggest help Do you think we need to return to simpler and easier to understand pinballs Because I suck as a player yes But that doesn t help the better players You need rules that keep all players happy How do you think pinball manufacturers can make a more playable and friendly game It d be cool if a game dispensed hot cheese nachos and cold beer How annoyed do you get with missing balls or hang ups on games I ve never really had it be an issue Do you think pinball manufacturers should get smart and kick out another ball quickly if there is a ball missing or not scoring Um I guess so How do you rank yourself as a player and do you play in tournaments I play way better than my friends who don t play and I suck compared to the ones who do play The cost of new pinball ownership has increased greatly over the last few

play offs The first Printimus Pinball tournament on the left is Armand Maculewicz who at the end of 2013 became new champion of Poland This article s author in a Stern T shirt at the opening Printimus Pinball tournament while behind him is Hubert Krysi ski playing Dracula You have also arranged some side tournaments Yes two and some small contests let s say for fun Terminator This is a strictly one theme tournament There are two Terminator machines used for it Terminator 2 and Terminator 3 Each player s best score at either machine is added up to determine the ranking table 1st place 10 pts 2nd place 8 pts etc Classic With the classic rules obviously As I currently have three classic pinball machines this tournament is a three machine competition To make it more attractive for the players they may buy extra credits to try again The Roger Sharpe Contest This is a small tribute to Mr Roger Sharpe who in 1976 had shown his extreme skills proving how pinball was a game of skill not a game of chance One of the tasks he was performing was to plunge the ball into a certain lane of the game it was the Bank Shot machine according to his son Josh Judging by the experience I gained with this contest it is very hard to succeed with at least 4 out of 6 attempts Only two players have done it so far ukasz has designed some very special diplomas which my company has printed These will be some kind of certificate which Roger has already signed The front of the certificate for the Roger Sharpe Contest signed by Roger himself The back of the certificate featuring the game Sharpshooter and Roger in New York when the city s ban on pinball was overturned You won the first edition of Elite and Classic and in second place in both was your son Congratulations but some people could think that you have an advantage like maybe you play a lot I was surprised too I haven t practiced much beforehand Maybe other players were just extremely kind I recall the Classic tournament wasn t decided until very last ball on Mata Hari In addition this not the first time the owner of the machines wins the tournament they organise Maybe this happens due to some kind of special treatment the machines grant their owner Hubert despite being 16 years old is a very good player already He may succeed in many tournaments to come For example he ended up in 7th place in a tournament we attended in Austria in June He won one of the tournaments held at Printimus Pinball and came second several times Hubert was also second in this year s Printimus Elite Series out of 41 players third in the Classic Tournament during Printimus 2013 12th Polish Championship and was fifth overall out of 84 to participate in three different tournaments Last but not least he usually wins most of the one on one competition games we sometimes play Hubert shakes his father s hand Tell us about your plans for future pinball activities As I mentioned before I plan to start a pinball parlour under the name Printimus Pinball as it will be located in the very building I have a print shop This will be something unique both in our region and country I would like this place to offer unforgettable entertainment for the family and an opportunity for people to meet each other We will offer everyone an opportunity to play REAL pinball Three players from Kraków during a Printimus tournament in Bytom L R Maciek who has a pinball pub this article s author and Stefan However my ultimate goal is to build my own pinball machine with the theme that would be closer to our national culture Thanks to advanced technology I am closer to making this dream happen than ever All I need to do is create the game design I already have some ideas graphics and put them all together with other elements available on the market So who knows I wish I had more time to spend on this Maybe someday But you also have something new to announce right I wanted to combine my pinball interests with my business activities so I prepared an offer to all pinball tournament organisers around the world It was accepted at the very top by the IFPA itself Everyone who organises an event under IFPA rules and regulations will be eligible to receive a free set of printing services that may be useful their event This set consists of posters flyers certificates diplomas and some number of design hours to prepare these things for processing digital or offset printing I expect my businesses to be promoted by the organiser in exchange for my involvement in the pinball players world Whoever is interested in taking advantage of this offer should contact the IFPA or their respective Country Director Most of the players are tired but some keep playing Mariusz watches his son Kuba s game A friendly photo for the end You can also read the interview with Marcin in Polish and more about pinball in Poland and Silesia in particular on the Interia website As I described at the very start of this article we had a few pinball events starting with the letter P in 2013 First of these was Pixel Heaven It was two days and one night of mostly retro computing and gaming held on 15th 16th June Retro computing and gaming what does that mean It encompasses everything related to old computers and video games consoles as you can see in this amazing promo video Organiser Robert api ski who is also a pinball fan decided that some pinballs should be included as part of Pixel Heaven He was right because there is an obvious connection between those phenomena Pixel Heaven was organised at a cult place

enjoy I love what we re all doing and wish I could buy games from all the companies Where would you like to see the pinball machine technology go in the future We re installing a flux capacitor in our games to help them go into the future When it comes back I bet it looks like one of those games from Multimorphic Do you like mods for pinball machines Love them Be creative and make each game your own How do you like new lighting technology You mean those CFCs squiggly bulbs They suck I can t fit them in any of my pinball lamp sockets LED s rock though What do you think the cost per play of new pins should be 1 00 That s what Bryan Kelly charges at his house What annoys you the most about pinball on location The pizza place up the street that won t sell me their dirty broken Medieval Madness The thing hasn t worked since Clinton was in office How can we get more new people interested in playing pinball Explain the game and have pretty girls in push up bras stand next to the machines Do you think we need to return to simpler and easier to understand pinballs A bit but we still need to keep it challenging fun How do you think pinball manufacturers can make a more playable and friendly game Keep the objectives simple and clear How annoyed do you get with missing balls or hang ups on games My crazy uncle once shot a jukebox nuff said Do you think pinball manufacturers should get smart and kick out another ball quickly if there is a ball missing or not scoring Ask my programmer He d smack me if I suggested it How do

this year in August In the past the Midwest Gaming Classic and the Texas Pinball Festival We are seeing more pinball machines being developed by small companies other than Stern Pinball What is your opinion on this new interest in the game I hope they are all successful and can do it They can do things a large manufacturer might not be able to risk Where would you like to see the pinball machine technology go in the future Wi Fi capability so the game can update itself Or so players could challenge other players in other locations Do you like mods for pinball machines Things like the ColorDMDs Yes Toys all over the playfield No How do you like new lighting technology Long overdue What do you think the cost per play of new pins should be 1 00 What annoys you the most about pinball on location If the game is neglected How can we get more new people interested in playing pinball Shows More games on location Not tournaments Do you think we need to return to simpler and easier to understand pinballs No Once you let the genie out of the bottle you can t put it back in How do you think pinball manufacturers can make a more playable and friendly game Keep an eye on the small manufacturers The best new ideas may pop up there How annoyed do you get with missing balls or hang ups on games I don t I grab the keys and go fix it Do you think pinball manufacturers should get smart and kick out another ball quickly if there is a ball missing or not scoring Missing Yes Not scoring You need to be sure it isn t a poor player How do you rank yourself as

if my math is any good Shows are great but to do shows today I would need to have a separate show crew in order to be less disruptive of general business We are seeing more pinball machines being developed by small companies other than Stern Pinball What is your opinion on this new interest in the game The more the merrier It s all good for pinball Where would you like to see the pinball machine technology go in the future Better serviceability and repairability Pinball games need maintenance but few designs accommodate easy serviceability and today s designs incorporate an excessive amount of PCBs that are not easily repaired creating a barrier to affordable ownership Do you like mods for pinball machines Mods are fine but too many of them are made for a short time only or made as a hobby It becomes impossible to stock them as a retailer as they are not available for re order on any type of a regular basis How do you like new lighting technology Great on some games not so good overall More development is needed before they become mainstream Light dispersion color balance and the mechanical fit to existing lamp sockets are all areas that need improvement What do you think the cost per play of new pins should be Whatever is required to support the purchase and maintenance of new games What annoys you the most about pinball on location Games that are not working competently a big turn off to all How can we get more new people interested in playing pinball Get pinball exposure outside the normal hobby limits For example advertise shows in the local media in addition to advertising to the collectors alone Bring folks off the street and convert them to pinball folks Do you think we need to return to simpler and easier to understand pinballs Yes How do you think pinball manufacturers can make a more playable and friendly game Focus on playability and challenges that are just beyond reach but look achievable we used to call it came close try again appeal How annoyed do you get with missing balls or hang ups on games Very Design and engineering should spend a little more time to perfect designs and hardware It should not become the responsibility of the owner or operator to finish the design or engineering of a game Do you think pinball manufacturers should get smart and kick out another ball quickly if there is a ball missing or not scoring I think they do this How do you rank yourself as a player and do you play in tournaments Average and no The cost of new pinball ownership has increased greatly over the last few years Does this stop you from buying new machines No I have more of a problem with space and I probably have enough see above With the introduction of new technology do you think pinball machines have become easier to service

locations but more at locations that fit the theme I don t want to beat on my own drum but when I organized a launch party for The Rolling Stones we went to the most well known rock cafe in the country We had posters of the translite with just a date and a venue People thought the Stones were doing a show and that even made the newspaper I don t recall any of the other rock band themed games were launched at Hard Rock Cafés or similar locations while that should actually generate interest outside the inner pinball circle The pinball enthusiasts will show up anyway so why not It s also very surprising to see that huge shows are being held while the neighbors have no clue what s going on With a bit of PR a lot more people could show up It s a good thing that pinball seems to do very well at shows that focus on more than just pinball That s also a good way to bring pinball back to peoples attention Do you think we need to return to simpler and easier to understand pinballs Those are two different things but I would applaud it On location nobody cares about a deep ruleset A game has to be entertaining from the start and people have to understand what they are doing that they are achieving certain objectives Stern seems to have a patent on starting multiballs where I really don t know what I did to achieve it That s not good That indicates the game isn t telling me what I did or what I should do Half the time I don t know the characters from these licenses anyway so that may explain why I don t get it but there are plenty of examples of games where some of the objectives are easy to understand Still beats me why they can t get it right when the wheel already has been invented How do you think pinball manufacturers can make a more playable and friendly game I don t think a game has to be friendly Personally I think it s more challenging to play a game that doesn t have countless 30 second ball savers on every multiball That kills all the fun for me Personally I think a game like Harlem Globetrotters is a great example On the right the re are four inline drop targets Behind them is a 50 000 points kickout hole Anybody understand the objective knock down the targets and get to the kickout hole No ball saves On every ball the targets reset so you have to do it all in one ball I think that s a great feature On Fathom it was even further improved You lock a ball targets come up In order to release the locked ball you have to knock down the targets Easy to understand but rather difficult to do That s what makes a
