their export games It was my first solid state pinball after several years experience with electromechanical machines from Williams and Gottlieb I remember what a surprise it was for me and my associates that we were able to open its backbox with a single twist of a hex key especially since the American pinballs available at the time in Poland forced you to remove the glass open the plywood panel which housed the lighting and then remove two long bolts to do the same Recel first applied this patent in a machine released a year earlier Poker Plus It took a while before American companies adopted this great idea Another Spanish innovation that took the Americans some time to utilise was the special epoxy used to cover the playfield which meant the playing surface looked like new even after many many years of use Mr Doom used the LED displays introduced by Recel in their production machines in 1978 and it included the so called System III CPU which was based around a Rockwell PPS4 chipset identical to the one used in contemporary solid state electronic Gottlieb models The LED displays used by the Spaniards were much larger and placed differently compared to those used in U S models and the counters were arranged one above the other The turn of the seventies and eighties brought some excellent Recel pinballs that showed those giants from Chicago a thing or two about making a good pinball Among those were Crazy Race Don Quijote Cavalier Flipper and The Game Many of them made also their way to the Polish market Recel s Don Quijote At that time you could find models from Playmatic and Inder in Poland The first of those companies produced their machines in Barcelona while the second was based in the Recel neighbourhood in Madrid Both used a characteristic arched rectangular overlay bumpers that were recognizable from afar by players at the time During the twenty odd years of their existence Inder has produced several models from electromechanical pinballs such as Seven Winner to electronic dot matrix display games such as Bushido This latter game was quite wittily advertised with a slogan saying American pinball No it s Inder Along the way the company released Canasta 86 which has since become the inspiration behind recently released MarsaPlay pinball entitled New Canasta which may yet become a torch bearer for the resurgence of Spanish pinball industry Inder s Canasta 86 Inder s Francisco Mestre Francisco Mestre was the director of Inder for many years He is pictured above in 1985 with the company s Brave Team Inder also experimented with the appearance of pinballs and tried fitting CRT monitors into their pinball machine s backboxes The result was a hybrid game called Flip VI which came out in 1990 Inder s Flip VI Rumatic s Mini Flipper This experimentation was taken the furthest by Madrid s Rumatic who used a CRT tube instead of a regular playfield in their Mini

have not played in a long while such as Monopoly and CSI A row with a variety of fun Stern pins The pins were all in excellent condition I very recently played many of the pins there and there were no mechanical issues with any of them The playfields and glass were also extremely clean An important part of playing a pinball machine for me is the sound so it was awesome that the volume on the pins at Enchanted Castle are kept fairly loud The AC DC pin really has the volume cranked up which added a lot to the fun of playing it A wall lined with another row of pins in the pinball room The spirit of Pat Lawlor can be felt in the room with five of the six pins he designed for Stern available to play Cool looking mini playfield decals mod on the Family Guy pin A clever touch in the room is a giant video screen playing a Transformers movie behind the Transformers LE pinball machine A rare Transformer LE ready to be played When you look up from the pin while playing it you see the Transformers movie playing on the wall behind Having all the pins together in a separate room is nice because the complex is geared towards little kids so grouping all the pins in the separate room cuts down on having a bunch of youngsters running around while playing you are playing the pins The games were priced at 1 00 a play but they all offered three plays for two dollars which made my money go further The token machines gave out a bonus of twenty extra tokens if you inserted a twenty dollar bill 100 tokens instead of 80 for my 20 was a great deal

Premier Street Level machines Vegas Deadly Weapon Title Fight and Hoops The Satellite Tournament machines This was originally billed as a tournament for the non qualifiers in the DPM but subsequently seemed to be available to everyone Qualifying began at 3pm on Saturday and continued until midday on Sunday The top two scorers on each machine would play in Sunday afternoon s semi finals After the main DPM tournament s qualification round had ended the Team Tournament was held involving twelve teams of four players The teams were Dutch Pinball Team Amsterdam Pinball Masters Team Osnaflip French Pinball Team Germany Sweden 1 Sweden 2 Switzerland Team Visioen Belgium Team UK Poland Teams were split into three groups of four teams with each team playing the other teams in their group in a pair of matches in which two players from one team played two from the other team Points were awarded with nine points for winning the match five points for second place and 2 points for third Whichever team had the most points after both matches had been played won two team points or if it was a tie both teams got one team point each Once every team had played the other three in their group the teams with the most team points in each group moved on to the semi finals along with the second placed team with the most points The two semi finals were played like the matches above but with the top scoring winning team playing the best second place team in one semi final and the other two teams playing in the second The winners of those semi finals then competed in the same way in the final while the losers played for third place After a long evening of pinball the winners of the Team Tournament were the Dutch Pinball Team of Albert Nomden Paul Jongma Dirk Klaver and Mark van der Gugten They received their trophies on Sunday afternoon once all the weekend s competitive events had concluded Winners of the Team Tournament Dutch Pinball Team L R Paul Jongma Mark van der Gugten Dirk Klaver and Albert Nomden The Dutch Pinball Team beat the Amsterdam Pinball Masters in the final By the time the presentations came around only one member of the team was still present to collect his trophy Roy Wils of the second placed Amsterdam Pinball Masters team The winners of the third place play off were Switzerland Third place Switzerland Sunday started at 10 30 with the first play off rounds of the DPM in the back room The format changed to a double elimination best of three system with machines chosen at random There were no byes for the top qualifiers but they did get to play the lowest qualifiers in the first round and avoided playing another top qualifier until the third round at the earliest Any competitors who lost a match joined the loser bracket where they played a single 2 player 4 ball game against another loser bracket player The winner continued in the loser bracket while the loser of the game dropped out of the tournament This was essentially the same format employed in the Dutch Pinball Open last November Reigning IFPA World Champion Jörgen Holm remained undefeated all the way through the play offs to claim one of the two places in the final His opponent was Robert Sutter who had lost to Jörgen in the semi final but beat Jorian Engelbrektsson in the last game of the loser bracket to meet Jörgen again in the final Would it be a repeat win for Jörgen or would Robert be able to turn the tables this time As he was undefeated so far Jörgen got to choose both machine and position in the first and if needed third game of this best of three final He chose Spider Man to start but after the first ball was trailing by 5M to Robert s 25M Both players got into top gear on their second ball which ended with Robert still slightly in front on 109M to 105M Neither player was able to repeat their ball two performances but Robert did the best raising his total to 125M Jörgen focused on Doc Ock multiball but misses a key shot and drains on 109M First blood to Robert then and it was also his choice of the second machine He picked Junkyard which also proved to be a close contest Jörgen drained his last ball early when attempting to pass the ball for a shot at the D O G lane but his score proved to be enough to take the second game One game each and it was Jörgen s pick for the decider He chose Indianapolis 500 Robert was the more consistent player having three good balls and ending on 800M Jörgen didn t start well but had a great second ball to leave himself needing 100M on his last ball to win He began Pit Multiball but it didn t last long enough to score any significant points so he tried to get the right orbit for a Change Setup award of 15M or 20M but missed and drained leaving him 80M behind Robert making Robert the winner Dutch Pinball Masters 2014 winner Robert Sutter Second place Jörgen Holm Third place Jorian Engelbrektsson Here are the full results of the DPM 2014 Pos Name Progress 1 Robert Sutter Final 2
