and The Adams Family Congo and The Addams Family Initially I was excited since I had never seen a Congo pinball before The working condition of the Congo was acceptable but the playfield lighting was not bright enough Sometimes I could not locate the ball easily and the ball drained a couple of times because of this Lack of general illumination made the Congo s playfield too dark Finally my

my journey to the Lori s Diner restaurant on Sutter Street in the heart of the city Lori s Diner Loris Diners is a chain of American 50s style restaurants with six locations in the city The front window of Lori s Diner on Sutter Street The one at the Sutter Street was quite spacious and with special decorations We were not hungry so we just ordered some drinks Inside Lori s Diner Some of the memorabilia inside There were 2 pinballs Whirlwind and Medieval Madness in a hidden cave inside the restaurant The diner s pinballs Initially I was excited since I had never played the Whirlwind before However I was disappointed when I started playing Whirlwind in Lori s Diner with extra balls instead of replays Why Since both of the pinballs tilted severely to the left the ball always tended running to the left outlane Medieval Madness and Whirlwind After an in depth inspection I found that the two machines were placed on a wooden raised floor but the floor could not sustain their weight Obviously this had been happening for a long time but nobody fixed it It may be because the two machines were for

Golden Gate Bridge to the Civic Center Metro station by bus and train Civic Center Metro station I reached the BrainWash Cafe after a ten minute walk from the Metro station Arriving at the BrainWash Cafe The BrainWash Cafe Laundromat My wife and I were very hungry so as soon as we arrived at the store we immediately ordered a late lunch The cafe In general the meal of hamburgers was large but not all that delicious when compared with the hamburgers available in Hong Kong s fast food shops Hamburgers for lunch at the BrainWash It was not surprise though since people from different regions often have different tastes in food Time for pinball There were three pinball machines near the entrance to the laundry area Roadshow South Park and Fish Tales The pinballs at the BrainWash Immediately after lunch I started playing all three of them Roadshow South Park Fish Tales The condition of the pinballs was good and it was easy to get replays Unfortunately I felt very cold when I was playing the pinballs since the entrance doors kept opening letting in cold air The entrance doors next to the pinballs So I had to leave

therefore I could completely enjoy playing pinball A Gottlieb Challenger head to head pinball E M arcade games A Japanese driving game Baseball and bowling games Apart from pinball machines and mechanical games on the ground floor there were a number of music boxes circa 1900 jukeboxes 1950 1980 and antique clocks on the upper floor Surprisingly most of them were still functional Movie posters line the stair walls Jukeboxes upstairs Music boxes Pipe organ Assorted appliances Assorted clocks Clocks and music boxes Pianos After playing pinball for a few hours I moved to the Music Café a coffee shop inside the museum to have my late lunch I found that the Music Café was also a small library of pinball books and a centre for cocktail video games The Music café Cocktail video games to play in the Music Café Jukebox and books Pinball books in the café It was very enjoyable for me to have my meal and coffee there It s lunchtime The director of the JGM Mr Bruce Tsuji proactively approached me to share the pinball experience and knowledge with me in a friendly manner Surprisingly he could speak English well According to him his family has taken over 50 years to accumulate all of the collections of the JGM He wanted to make friends with pinball lovers from different parts of the world I was touched beyond words by his passion for pinball Apart from Bruce I also made friends with the museum manager Mr Yokoi and some local volunteers Mr Nakamura Takeda and Yamanaka who came from different regions of Japan Bruce center volunteers at the museum The museum s managers Mr Mrs Yokoi In addition we competed in some mini tournaments among ourselves Although the museum was supposed to close at 5pm I

as shown in the picture Cut a hole in playfield for the new switch Wire cables for new switch and solenoid Fit an extra fuse block for the new solenoid Fit a new ball release mechanism and solenoid Using pictures I had been sent and to save me bombarding Pascal with more e mails I went ahead and started the lower playfield modifications using the pictures he sent to figure out datum points The wire guides were made and fitted using the artwork as datum points for the sizes of wire guides needed and where to put them The L shaped cut out in the existing main metal guide for the ball release solenoid was figured out using his pictures and parts at hand for reference I decided to hold off making the new angled bracket and the lower playfield switch cut out until I had more information from Pascal The new ball release gate THE RELAYS On the original Haunted House there is no need for the main or upper playfield flippers to work when a ball is in the lower playfield as there is only one ball However when you are adding multiball there will be times when you need all the flippers to work at once This entails rewiring relay U on the underside of the main playfield and adding another relay relay Z as Pascal called it He sent me a file on Sept 17th detailing the changes See the image he sent me below note it s in French Pascal s diagram of the relay wiring changes As you can see the relay contacts highlighted in orange move to the new relay Z Incidentally the numbers in brackets are the existing cable colours e g 888 is grey grey grey At this stage I had no idea how the coil of the new relay was to be wired though I guessed correctly as it turned out that the positive would be from relay U and the drive would come from the backbox Pascal confirmed this on Sept 19th as well as telling me he would shortly send me a PI 80 albeit without the HH multiball software on it He also sent me a hand drawn picture of the new relay bracket on the same day as well as a picture of a new non return gate that was to be added at top of the upkicker tube Pascal s drawing of the relay bank and non return gate The day I was sent that I actually found a Gottlieb relay bracket which had space for the new relay The relays mounted on the new bracket The non return gate is needed at the top of the tube because if two balls entered the VUK at the same time it would almost certainly cause a problem it struggles with just one ball Hence the reason why the non return gate has to be added as originally you could shoot down the upkicker tube As it turned out I had a NOS Gottlieb non return gate which fitted fine with only minor modifications needed The tube exit from the lower playfield with the new non return gate THE MOD CONTINUES On the 20th September I e mailed Pascal for a bit more information on the lower playfield changes and also to find out where the drive cable for the new relay would go to in the backbox He replied with many more pictures and details on the 21st telling me where it was to be connected as well as a sketch of the lower playfield bracket with its dimensions Pascal s sketch of the VUK ball feed mechanism I found an old guide and modified it as it was of a similar size Again I fitted it using my best guess as to where it went At this point as I am looking back it really is a great testament to Pascal here as this point on September 21st was the day he was taking his Haunted House to his show in France So there he was on that day sending me information pictures and tweaking the code as well as preparing for his own show I thanked him at the time and he said I need a twin bro and a 2nd life Indeed On September 25th I received the PI 80 board and a few days later more information from Pascal as well as him explaining that the game went down very well at his show but he still had some software tweaks he wanted to do As the software code for the multiball was still work in progress he asked when was the latest date for me to receive the MCU daughterboard with the multiball software on it I told him Oct 5th as our Northern Lights show was on the 13th 14th October and I would need time to check it was all working OK I then cut the hole in the lower playfield for the new switch and spent eons trying to set it up correctly Even with the playfield not in the game it was having ball hangs with me just gently rolling the ball down to that area The problem is there can be very little speed in the ball in that area and that was causing ball hangs as the slow speed could cause it to come to rest in the new switch cut out I also received details of where the wires went for the switches Both the lower playfield mini lock area switch and the main trough switches both picked up on existing switch matrix cables with a schottky diode added and the software had these switch number assignments in its code The main trough switch s number is 56 It connects between existing wires 1st wire 455 yellow green green STROBE 5 through a diode 2nd wire 666 blue blue blue RETURN 6 For the lower playfield switch number 61 1st wire 466 yellow blue
