as he always described his career in pinball One heck of a time Further tributes to Steve National Public Radio NPR Vending Times Steve s Facebook page Washington Post Wall Street Journal Chicago Mag Chicago Tribune Gizmodo Time LA Times Daily Mail The Register Pinball News recordings of Steve talking about his experiences in the pinball industry Pinball Expo 2003 Pinball Expo 2006 Pinball Expo 2007 Pinball Expo 2008 Pinball Expo 2009 Jim Jansen jimfjansen journalist and PR Chief of the Dutch Pinball Association NFV has also written his tribute to Steve I ve been playing pinball for over 30 years now I don t remember exactly when I found out that pinball machines were not regularly manufactured products It was just the opposite they were all designed in the greatest detail by real people By men in most cases whose business cards showed job titles like Pinball Designer When I really understood that I immediately realised the commonalities between Twilight Zone and The Addams Family and between Attack from Mars and Medieval Madness Those pinball machines were designed by the very same people to be specific by Pat Lawlor and Brian Eddy When you play a pinball machine you just feel the magic hand of the designer The best funniest or most creative designer simply doesn t exist because it s all about a matter of taste and you know what that s like you simply can t argue taste From a commercial perspective Pat Lawlor might be seen as the most successful Designer ever as his The Addams Family is still generating a lot of cash in coin operated situations Even after 20 years Steve Ritchie seem to own the patent on creating the ultimate rapid playing machines John Popadiuk knows how to turn universal themes into ingenious machines There s no single Designer who stands out in my favourites list but there is certainly one who is recognized as the most legendary Steve Kordek Steve passed away last week Feb 19 2012 at the age of one hundred years Almost eighty years ago Kordek being a youngster aged 20 walked through the doors of Genco Manufacturing Just after the second world war in 1947 to be precise Kordek invented something very simple but revolutionary at the same time This is the set of items which we being the die hard pinball players enjoy daily Even after almost 80 years Kordek found out that you just needed 2 flippers in a pinball machine and those had to be positioned at the bottom of the playfield It sounds so simple and in fact it is But there was only one person who invented this and that man is called Steve Kordek In the many years after his innovation with the flippers Kordek changed the world of pinball in an inimitable way Those lucky readers who have been able to play a Williams Vagabond once will know that this was the first machine with true drop targets These were also

marketed Brett s designs for LED displays driver and controller boards and power supplies under the PinScore brand Now though Brett has branched out on his own and set up the XPin brand to design manufacture and market a new range of next generation products Brett Davis Brett described his new XPin range to Pinball News as the next step in the evolution process for replacement products He said all the designs have been re engineered from those he created for the PinScore range and are unique to XPin He continued XPin products utilize the latest technology advancements and components produce a lot less heat and showcase the most alluring aesthetics of any product on the market today He aims to produce the same types of boards as before where he was probably best known for his multi coloured LED replacement displays but also created many power supply and driver boards A big part of my product focus is still displays but I will not be limited to them I have been making substantial investments to bring more colors to the display market and will continue to do so I am also putting time and energy into power systems and driver boards I have many new products planned that have never seen the light of day In general our plan is to be making regular announcements every 2 3 weeks X Pin products will be manufactured in the United States and be available direct from Brett or through his distributors who are currently Bay Area Amusements and MyArcadeRepair The first of the orange XPin LED displays have just become available from BAA They are suitable for Williams Bally and Data East machines with some also available as blue green and red versions NEW LORD OF THE RINGS PROTECTOR Back in 2005 we reviewed a new plastic protector for The Lord of the Rings which was designed to protect the game s plastics and playfield as the ball fell off the Paths of the Dead mini playfield into the Hobbiton upkicker Points where damage occurs in The Lord of the Rings Two runs of these were produced by PinWest s David Eisner with the second addressing all the issues we had the first time around However PinWest closed down several years ago and although they were good these protectors didn t last forever Now help is at hand for anyone with a broken protector or who want to prevent any further damage to their game thanks to a new version being manufactured in Australia and sold by Scott Milgate The new Lord of the Rings protector Scott bought the rights to the protectors from David Eisner and set about improving the design The new protector is made from a much thicker 3mm clear plastic which also has corners and edges made by heat bending rather than the grooved construction used in the original version The changes should make the new protectors much stronger and resilient The new protector in place Scott

team is in Chicago making rules and modes and you must make sure there s something to go with them on the monitor JP I have the original movie here and I ve been watching it Greg has indicated which scenes we can use and I am now working out how to use them For some I see the possibility to make a kind of loop so the animation continues as long as the mode lasts We are still figuring out how to best use the monitor so that is interesting for the player as well as for anyone watching the game The player will only occasionally look at the screen because the action and the focus is on the playfield So we are thinking of making specific animations for those times when the player has a few seconds to look at the monitor for instance at the start of multiball or when you get an extra ball Compared with dot matrix displays the possibilities seem endless JP There are certainly more possibilities but because it is all so new we are still discovering new things ourselves But when I showed JJP what I had in mind they were very enthusiastic indeed To make things easier I got myself an extra LCD monitor of exactly the same size as the one in the pinball machine That way I can see if things turn out in the right proportions and if the text is readable JP in his office In Spain a manufacturer has taken a design from the eighties and upgraded it with LED lighting and a big flatscreen monitor in the backbox JP New Canasta you mean You can look them up on YouTube and you will see it is all a bit boring Rest assured that The Wizard of Oz will blow you away What s your take on The Wizard of Oz theme JP In the United States The Wizard of Oz is a classic The movie on which the pinball is based was made in 1939 and it is one of the most viewed movies of all times There s also more to it than just the story The Wizard of Oz was a technical masterpiece because it used Technicolor a technique using both colour and black and white This movie was also the first box office success after a period of recession So we hope that WOZ will also become a technical masterpiece and the start of a new period in the history of pinball Have other uses been suggested for the flatscreen JP There is one suggestion of which I m not a big fan and that is to display local advertisements in attract mode We would then supply the specifications of the screen so that the owners of the bar or amusement arcade can display their own advertisements on it JP creating the JJP logo animation Jerry Vandersteldt designed the artwork for the cabinet as well as the backglass which has the monitor in it Will the backglass be backlit JP That s a good question I m not sure actually I think it will be because it also has the logo on it Personally I d go for static lighting not flashing Your name was kept quiet by Jersey Jack Pinball for a long time JP That s right Even I was wondering why it was taking so long Jack is in general not secretive about the progression and the developments of The Wizard of Oz but he has clearly become more cautious Stern announced at Pinball Expo that they were going to replace the dot matrix displays with something else and perhaps Jack wanted to keep my name a secret for as long as possible I have quite a number of animations on my website as examples of my previous work and if Stern knew I would be doing the animation they might realize what they were up against Another possibility is simply that not many people would know who I am In the end the information was leaked by a rather bizarre accident I had told one of my neighbours that I was working on the animations for a pinball machine He turned out to be an active member of the Visual PinMAME forum and he immediately posted this news including a link to my site We discussed it with Jack and he then announced my involvement Jack at his desk with the JJP animation Are you going back to the States JP I hope to go back when the production line in New Jersey is up and running Most of the work in Chicago will be done by then unless they are onto the next project And what are your plans for the future JP For now I m busy with The Wizard of Oz but they have asked me between the lines if I might be interested in doing a second pinball as well The main focus now is to make a game that inspires other graphic artists to create something in their style for a future pinball They ll have to because I can t do it all by myself especially if the next one is not a licensed theme If there are no basics whatsoever you have to design everything from scratch How do you like the work so far JP As a freelance project it is great It is a long and diverse project Most of my projects for the Dutch television and internet companies last only for a couple of days or a week at most That s fine when it s just about making an animation but this is also about figuring out the best layout and thinking about how the player will experience the game You said you might not be able to do it all by yourself Does that mean there are opportunities for creative readers who also like to make animations JP For future projects I m certainly thinking of
