    the latest Transformers It was in fact the European debut for the new Stern Transformers game The first European appearance for the new Stern Transformers Near the competition machines five more pinball machines kindly provided by I E M were available for free play Spider Man Indiana Jones Grand Prix Monopoly and Elvis On top of that other stands also gave the opportunity to try the newest Stern game The tournament area The tournament took place on the first two days of the show Wednesday and Thursday October 12th and 13th The qualification round started at noon of the 12th and players could register their scores until 6pm The following day the doors opened at 10am with the silver balls flying around the playfields until 3 30pm when the qualification was closed During this time players could enter as many times as they liked in order to improve their scores on the five qualifying machines Attendance at the tournament was not big due to the fact that the event was held on two weekdays but in addition to the Italian players some players also came from both France and Belgium The big names were the 2010 World Champion Daniele Acciari the current European Champion Frank Bona and the reigning Italian Champion Mario Anzini Players busy in the qualifying round The top four qualifiers entered the final rounds to decide the Rome Pinball Tournament Champion The standing at the end of the qualifying round was the following Pos Name 1 Michel Dailly 2 Daniele Acciari 3 Franck Bona 4 Mario Anzini 5 Eric Andries 6 Joel Wozniak 7 Enrico Giorgio De Stefani 8 Gianluigi Macchi 9 Stefano Pavoncello 10 Alessandro Rea 11 Valerio La Torre 12 Alessio Crisantemi As you can see the match ups for the semi finals were then

clips featuring pinball in one way or another Some were TV commercials which used pinball as their theme while others were music promos TV or movie clips containing a pinball as part of the scene news reports about pinball and pinball in cartoon animations Jim collects these clips and sells DVDs of them under the Pinball Media Clips name with two volumes currently available to purchase as part of a five disc DVD set Because Jim s presentation was mostly video based we do not have an audio recording of it here COLLECTOR CRUSADES Phoebe Smith David Doc Pinball Fix Phoebe Smith David Fix Phoebe and David spoke about their adventures finding and collecting pinballs Phoebe showed the audience around here pinball barn and told some stories about how she came to own them the different places show found them and the restoration work she undertook to bring them back to life Some of the games in Phoebe s barn Dave then spoke about his collection including a Scuba Paragon X s O s a Pinbot and a Black Knight He said to find these games he has to deal with operators antique dealers estate sale agents shippers moving companies amongst others Some of these he said don t know anything about pinball so you can get some good deals Phoebe said her original crusade was to find one machine from each year in the 1980s Her quest began with a Cosmic Gunfight and continued with Star Light of which only 100 were made She then showed pictures of her and Larry s living room where all the furniture had been removed and pinball machines had taken over Dave and Phoebe then traded stories of how they acquired several of their machines such as Algar Farfalla Defender and Spider Man Dave also described several games he had bought from lot buyers people who buy up the contents of buildings after antique dealers have cherry picked the best items for a few hundred dollars at a time They then talked about games which never went into production which were found Dave described finding an Alvin G Duo Pool whitewood game with cabinet artwork which wasn t previously known to exist while Phoebe found some Williams backglasses for a game called Sentinel which ended up as Jungle Lord and Lanes Flash Player to hear this audio clip ROCK ROLL PINBALL Mark Bakula Don Caldwell Mark Bakula Don Caldwell Each appearance at Pinball Expo for Mark and Don heralds the unveiling of some new project of theirs and this year was no exception From purchasing a populated Stern Grand Prix playfield Mark explained how he went about designing new cabinet backbox and translite artwork to apply to a disused Sharkey s Shootout cabinet to create his own Grand Prix game with a Ferrari branding After describing the steps he took to prepare the cabinet collect assorted graphical assets and work with an artist to create the composition and a printer to print the decals and translite they unveiled the completed game Mark s new Grand Prix game The side artwork Following the presentation Don and Mark began a quiz section of their presentation where they combined questions on pinball and rock n roll with Stump The Tech questions where audience members gave Gavin of Gavin s Game Service technical problems and he had to diagnose the fault with just three questions Anyone stumping the tech or being drawn and correctly answering one of the pinball or rock n roll questions would win their choice from a     Will Julie s dreams of winning a pinball tournament come true Do apple fritters have way too many calories Pinball Donut Girl will star Jane Wiedlin Star Trek The Go Go s but the crew need donations to meet the projected 21 750 costs The film s Producer Anna Newman told Pinball News that she hopes to go ahead with shooting in San Francisco in November so really needs to raise the necessary funds by the end of October to pay the crew and hire the equipment Anna already funded the shooting of one of the scenes at California Extreme using a Gottlieb Slick Chick supplied as part of a display by the Pacific Pinball Museum Shooting one of the scenes from Pinball Donut Girl at California Extreme photo by Melanie Nelson The project has already attracted more than 7 000 since the start of the month as well as the backing of some well known names in the pinball business including Gene Cunningham John Popadiuk the Pacific Pinball Museum and Jeri Ellsworth along with many others Donors receive a range of benefits depending on the size of contributions from access to behind the scenes pictures copies of the film

    this one and that would be a mistake Capcom s Kingpin Only nine of them were ever made this one is from TJ Beyer s collection TJ is a one of the show organizers and also an operator in the Bay Area maintaining some of the best location games If you need a game TJ can make it happen and keep the players happy with solid maintenance Kingpin shows a level of raw ness in its design but is an addictive player The score display is sparse yet it has excellent flow and art and all the mode animations are fully fleshed with some humor mixed in It s vaguely reminiscent of Whodunit in theme but not at all in play The sudden death mode at the end of the game where the flippers gradually weaken is truly unique and makes for some great showdowns and surprises in multiplayer games Here s another ultra rare game an original Big Bang Bar Only 14 of these exist With a fun alien bar theme it s a solid player and the unique Capcom feel sets it apart Why put these two ultra rare games out on a show floor for the general public s use and abuse Because the owners of these pinball holy grails would rather see them played and enjoyed as opposed to sitting quietly under a tarp California Extreme is far from just pinball it s likewise and equally a video gamer heaven Hundreds of video games adorned the floor from the very firsts such as Computer Space to the exotics rare Japanese Imports one offs and the latest games Jap cabinets were in abundance usually with multi game setups With California Extreme running long hours these sit down opportunities provided a nice rest during all the pinball action An elaborate computer controlled Player Piano was an eclectic and exotic treat Jeri Ellsworth on Birkball a simple yet extremely addictive game For the second year in a row show registration was made easy and fast courtesy of T Minus 1 and Michelle Morris T Minus 1 is also an excellent choice for location pinball backed by master fix it man Chris Kuntz Chris and his brother Andy also lend their skills to Pin a Go Go and the Pacific Pinball Exposition If Chris can t fix it it probably can t be fixed Erica Reikki wife of co founder of the East Bay Pinball League Kevin Reikki and daughter getting in some Ms Pacman Dylan Eichenbaum another EBPL regular mixes it up on some Ultrapin On Saturday the show floor was jammed with enthusiasts Mark Birching and TJ Beyer are two of the show s main organizers Walter Hurwitz a long standing member of the Bay Area Pinball Association BAPA shows that he has several areas of arcade dominance Here he is going toe to toe in the Panic Park Tournament where he defeated several contenders As seen above the organizers decided to add even more panic to the

    Simpsons Pinball Party Monster Bash Junkyard Harley Davidson Roadshow The trophies for the tournament photo by Franck Bona Qualification began at around noon when the 63 competitors present could choose any six out of the twelve machines and play a single game on them They could play individually or in groups because all that mattered was the score All the scores on each machine were ranked and ranking points awarded The machine scores and overall ranking positions were shown on a big projector screen Players watch the scores on the screen When everyone had played all their six games or they had played enough to qualify the top 32 players went through to the play off rounds With qualification over it was also time to present the award to the Best Junior Player who was Clement Carré Franck announces the Best Junior Player award Best Junior Player Clement Carré Then it was time to resume the competition Players on the second bank of machines Junkyard had to be removed from the competition due to a fault which couldn t be repaired quickly The play offs were single elimination four player matches where the top two players in each match went through to the next round The play off rounds begin That left sixteen for the second round of play offs then eight and then the final four who were Timothée Hulin Bouard Thomas Bougard David Grémillet and Olivier Renders Host Franck tries for a place in the final to no avail Unfortunately we couldn t stay until the end as we had to catch the ferry back to the UK but the final was won by Timothée who finished ahead of David with Thomas in third and Olivier fourth The top four players L R Timothée Hulin Bouard 1st David

    panel at Midwest Gaming Classic didn t work out so I missed that show On a more positive note there was the Spring Pinball Circus May Day Tournament And a smattering of Crazy Joe Esposito Pinball Events Pinball Picnics and Launch Those Geese events And I started the Universal Player Yearly Organized United Ranking System http www upyours info to track and reward regular participants in my events There was the addition May 8th of Prada the sweetest little dog ever she started working daily in my human resources department Coming up the Fall Pinball Circus http www pinballcircus com The LTG Show at Expo http www pinballexpo net and the Friday After Thanksgiving Pinball Tournaments So once again after the lights go out tonight And I ll have some coffee and check RGP and other places to see if anyone needs any pinball help before I go home I ll be thinking of the coming year as I head towards my 40th Anniversary A new chance and a new start filled with hopes and dreams things I hope to accomplish things I hope happen and all that is pinball Mark your calendars now for September 20th 2012 For the Ruby Goose Party A one day free event similar to the early Goose parties to give thanks to all who helped make this possible In closing I want to say Thank You to all who have helped get things this far The list is long and from many parts of the pinball community Manufacturers distributors operators friends customers and people that are traveling and make it a point to stop in and say hi Thank you doesn t seem nearly enough it comes from the heart Thank you to all who have helped keep SS Billiards going and the machine that is pinball alive LTG 8th Version Once again I sit wondering if I should make an anniversary post I ve been working on writing one This is the seventh version Quite unlike the previous 6 which were similar just cleaned up It s hard to not think back on the evening of September 19th 1972 When the Hopkins City council approved the license transfer to my Mother Who bought SS Billiards with my help And ran it until she retired in 1979 and sold me her interests and helped run it until her health weakened and she didn t work past late October 1987 SS Billiards was around for a year and three fourths when we bought it 39 years passes so quickly Yet as I think about it it seems like only yesterday I remember driving out and walking up and unlocking the door Going inside To face an uncertain future Full of hopes and dreams Time passes The world revolves and keeps changing Yet somehow SS Billiards seems anchored in time Things have evolved inside the names and faces of the customers keeps changing And people constantly stop in to be sure SS Billiards is still there

    plastics in the game contain artwork and cutouts to create lighting effects You can see what he means in these pictures above and below which show the return of multi level slingshots and artwork on all the plastic ramps sections The Megatron shot The Optimus Prime feature The Optimus Prime shot The feature grid One of the most visible new initiatives introduced by Stern is the inclusion of QR codes square barcodes throughout the Transformers game George said these would appear in future games and when scanned with a phone or other connected device would give the player ways to add extra features into the gameplay Transformers QR codes George said some codes are printed on the game s decals while others appear on the dot matrix display at certain milestones In another new and possibly related initiative Stern have set up a micro site exclusively for Transformers They previously had all the audio clips from the game on there but have since removed them However we managed to grab these MP3 samples before they disappeared Optimus Prime 1 Optimus Prime 2 Sam Witwiki Megatron There are also images of the sketches George showed at PPE along with others such as these which suggest the All Spark Cube was originally going to be on the right side of the playfield and turned by a geared spinner in the shooter lane George s original sketches for Transformers George s original sketches for Transformers This sketch suggests a mini playfield design like the LT 5 engine on Corvette A sketch of a mini playfield The sketches are not linked to directly but a little delving will easily find them The micro site might also be where the QR codes lead you once you scan them in The Stern Transformers micro site Stern
