  • Roots tangling back further… | Polly Paulusma
reconnected with some old London friends who came up to Cambridge to stay with their little one Adem and his life partner Emma Adem www adem tv you may remember his beautiful debut album Homesongs came out on Domino almost at the same moment as my debut Scissors in my Pocket came out on One Little Indian back in 2004 Our albums share a great deal in common a homespun acoustic sensibility both recorded largely at home both delicate emotional affairs bearing souls But in fact the roots of our relationship tangle back further I will always remember our first encounter I had just finished a set at The Hope Anchor in Islington a night run by Marc Johnson Big Note where I used to play regularly before I was signed when a man looking something like Ghandi elbowed his way up to me and delicately placed his demo in my hands Even back then this was not the first time this had happened something I am always surprised by and never take for granted although the results can be a little disappointing But not here when I got home and listened to Adem s songs I fell off my chair Literally He had been so unassuming so gracious Bastard a genius in my midst and he had acted all humble We became very good friends very quickly sharing an understanding of the strange processes we were involved in collaborating on projects sharing the bill at venues Adem had been in record deals before with band Fridge of which he was a member with Kieren Hebden and he felt wise and in control I received good advice from him as I leapt over the stepping stones in the river of my record deal negotiations with One Little Indian in particular

  • Washing the mud off… | Polly Paulusma
Francis Leftwich Joan Armatrading Anais Mitchell most of Dry the River saw some of their set though wonderful but then I did get to see the rich Gerard and the Watchmen what a voice Jessie Moncrieff Daisy Bell and Karine Polwart right up to and including the hailstones I think this patchwork quiltery of satisfaction is the nature of taking small kids to festivals it s a good chance to practise one s patience and goodwill Drop the shoulders buy another toy make them feel good On Friday I was incredibly stressed trying to get on site to do an interview and I can see now it overshadowed my whole day to the point where I was not fun to be around I am still learning how to balance family life with the pointed focus of a working attitude They are not natural bedfellows for me but I live I learn But to be surrounded by in close proximity to all that music even if it is tantalisingly out of reach is so uplifting I feel all my musical nerve endings jangling I did my gig on the Thursday evening in the Club Tent little did I realise that I was in fact the opening act of the festival proper which was amazing and the place was packed I was expecting it to be three men and a dog given that it was the opening slot but I think I benefited from a long soundcheck where people were nosing around when there was not a lot else going on and then a gig time which didn t clash with anyone else So there they all were and I played my heart out and I hope people enjoyed it They seemed to It was a joy to play with my band
