  • Why Graphene Is The Material Of The Future
Game Changers The people things and ideas that will change our lives in 2016 Scientists are calling graphene the miracle material that will revolutionise the tech industry Why Because this single layer of carbon atoms is incredibly light and thinner than any other material on the planet Thanks to graphene we ll be able to fold away or roll up the displays and touchscreens of the future Microchips will become even smaller and 10 000 times faster than the chips we use today There s no doubt about it the future belongs to graphene But science is still looking for ways to mass produce the stuff When you consider that it usually takes about 40 years for any new material to get from the research lab to the market it s clear we ll just have to sit back and watch as a little more time and money is ploughed into it After all we only discovered graphene s miraculous powers about 10 years ago Lifestyle Bacteria sprays How micro organisms are going to replace the need to shower in the future Advertising YouTube The University of Manchester The home of graphene 4 other materials that might change the world

  • Astronaut Chris Hadfield Explains The Power of Negative Thinking
CHRIS HADFIELD The problem and the answer are in your question As soon as you re hoping you ve already lost because hoping means you ve lost control If you re relying on luck you re no better than a Chihuahua a quivering helpless little dog An astronaut isn t helpless before his fate he checks exactly what could go wrong during a rocket launch In my book I call that the power of negative thinking Lifestyle Bio hackers Meet the people making drastic changes to their bodies to improve them Lifestyle Preparing for space The force is awakening again Better prepare for space travel Advertising Chris Hadfield recorded his version of David Bowie s Space Oddity on board the International Space Station Composition SPACE ODDITY Written by David Bowie Published by Onward Music Limited YouTube Chris Hadfield What do you mean Self help gurus are always advising us to think positively and envisage success but it s about as helpful as thinking about cupcakes Just thinking about them isn t going to help It s more important to think what could go wrong with a mission Visualise failure not success That s what s essential to survival as an astronaut I was an astronaut for 21 years but I only spent six months in space The rest of the time I was looking into every detail that might go wrong during a mission Once you ve understood all the potential risks and you re forewarned against them fear no longer plays a part in your thought process Even though you re aware that being an astronaut is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world I never experienced any fear when I got into a spacecraft not because I was brave but because I d practised solving every problem thousands of times Being well prepared makes all the difference It minimises any fear and gives you confidence Doesn t negative thinking make you depressed in the long term though Hang on a minute I m not saying you should give up all hope The main thing is to visualise failure not defeat YOU HAVE TO TAKE RISKS IF YOU WANT TO LIVE YOUR LIFE TO THE FULLEST Can you give an example You re giving a talk what might happen You might forget your lines OK so if you forget your lines you can crack a joke about the weather and try to get back to where you should be that way What else might go wrong Your microphone might malfunction or you might get thirsty Work out strategies to deal with the five things most likely to go wrong so that you can remain in control whatever happens In that sense giving a talk isn t any different from a rocket launch There s just a slightly different level of preparation But what about risks that are beyond your control even with the best preparation A better question to ask would be how does one correctly assess

  • Exploring Cambodia's Wilderness on Two Wheels
combines the high speed thrills and spills of mud splattered off road biking with the cross country cultural adventure of the finest travel tours Think of it as Excitebike meets Condé Nast Traveler That isn t to say it s pedal to the metal the whole way Going distinctly off the beaten tourist track brings its fair share of environmental obstacles and problems can t always be solved by tweaking the torque Lifestyle SPIN CYCLE The best places to get barreled on a bodyboard Advertising We can travel around 776 miles on a trip but when you have deep mud sand and rivers to traverse the going can get slower says Capsey It makes for a thrillingly unpredictable environment Getting close to the sites Neil petersen Sometimes it s down to your initiative in a situation he says On a recent trip the late monsoon season meant various bridges had washed away so we had to rely on five local kids to fish out a sunken canoe repair the holes using mud and then help us transport eight bikes across the river And while you re not exactly using pedal power it s still very much an endurance sport The danger element comes from how hard you re pushing people in extreme weather says Capsey Being in the jungle is a nice romantic idea but you re wearing an extra couple of pounds in serious tropical heat and you need to keep hydrated It s challenging riding that requires all your concentration I d compare the feeling to being at high altitude Jungle obstacles are no joke Iain crockart THE INSIDER Get as much time in the saddle as you can before you leave says Nick Capsey The more you understand how the bike moves beneath you on loose ground
