  • Cirque Le Soir: In the Temple of Decadence
co owner When friends and I opened the venue six years ago we wanted to create a cross between a circus and a club something for dancers who expect more from a night out than alcohol and music and a place for artists whose shows are too extreme for other clubs As the circus director at CLS I look out for the clubgoers wellbeing Stars such as Kanye West and Rihanna are regulars here because they know they can really go wild without the need for bodyguards Miley Cyrus knows that she can smooch with a dancer in a baby mask at our place and no one will take photographs That s because we provide a private place for the stars and also because at CLS they don t stand out among all the drag queens and oddballs STARS FEEL SAFE AT CIRQUE LE SOIR BECAUSE THEY DON T STAND OUT AMONG ALL THE ODDBALLS CYNTH ICORN 24 performance artist By day I get paid to whip men in my job as a fetish model by night you ll find me dancing in a latex suit at Cirque Le Soir And although the work I do at the club is more innocent than my daytime photo sessions I find the atmosphere here more surreal After my performance I ll go backstage and see a dwarf massaging two bearded cheerleaders Next to them there will be a belly dancer polishing her machine gun And yet it all seems like the most natural thing in the world Clubgoers who come to CLS might feel as if they ve entered a whole different world but when I m here it just feels like I m with my people This club gives freaks like me a home Advertising In the back room clubgoers can splash around in the plastic ball pool play beer pong and have their fortune told by a fairground machine TOMMY 26 make up artist I ve been a regular ever since I discovered the club three years ago It gets you hooked because you re constantly discovering new things about yourself Before I started coming to CLS I could never have imagined that the best feeling on Earth would be dancing on a bar with four snakes creeping their way up your body I started working here a year ago I went from being an innocent English student from the countryside to working as a make up artist at the craziest club in London I give the clubgoers a new identity for the night in my make up corner A mask of neon mascara and glitter helps them discard their inhibitions and forget their everyday lives When the artists come on stage at 1am the club is transformed into a freaks paradise SHAHARA 30 snake charmer When I roam around the club with my snakes around my neck it s not unusual for some people to try to get away from me in a panic especially when I m showing

  • All Senses Go
a businessman most of my life It came from trying to please my grandfather starting when I was about 10 years old He had a lot of disappointments in his life so I remember making a conscious decision to make this man happy and bring joy to his life Even though I ve always been an artist I decided to go the business route because I thought it would make my grandfather proud It finally hit me one day that I need to follow my own goals and that I masquerading What inspired you to leave everything behind and jump into the unknown When you have a purpose it s as if the universe inspires to help you That s why all these things are happening like they are It was more effort and struggle when I was in business Meeting friends who were photographers and seeing how successful they were making a living doing what they loved doing was also a big influence on me Yindu Chin woman drinking river water out of pumpkin gourd Shan fisherman fishing for eel Woman fishing on Taung Tha Man Lake in Mandalay Fishermen at sunrise on Taung Tha Man Lake Amarapura in Mandalay How did you get into photography My stepfather bought me a Canon AE 1 back in the 80s Once I got hold of that camera and started to play around with it there was no turning back I treated the viewfinder as a canvas and went out and started framing everything I would look out into the mountains or the ocean and I learned how to frame images as if I were drawing them I m also a thrill seeker I grew up as a skier and surfer so I ve always been drawn to adventure It was the perfect fit being able to travel and be a photographer all at the same time was the perfect combination The more remote or exotic and dangerous the adventure is the more I m attracted to it Why did you decide to focus your first book on Burma and what went into creating it Five years ago a photographer I met at a gallery was going there and he had one spot left so I went and the second I landed in Burma I fell under its spell This book is my love letter to Burma I ve fallen in love with the people and the culture and their plight I almost feel an obligation to share and teach people about this magical place The book took about eight trips and five years Every trip I stayed for 28 days the complete visa stay you can make in Burma What were some of the more inspiring moments of your travels there I was in a monastery and they had these nuns visiting They all went into this room and started chanting It was the most beautiful thing I had ever heard like angels singing It brought a tear to my eye

  • Speedriding: The Unrideables
a two week trip to the southern edge of the Alaska Range an area known for feats of backcountry skiing and snowboarding The trip s purpose was twofold to ski areas that had never been touched before and to raise awareness of and set new standards in the nascent sport of speedriding Part paragliding part downhill skiing speedriding originated at Chamonix in France more than a decade ago through pioneers such as Francois Bon and Antoine Montant The sport has a high barrier of entry and the best riders are accomplished skydivers and wingsuit flyers Instruction is available on European mountains When the parachute is over your head you feel like a superhero skier The best runs are the ones that go according to plan Jon DeVore preparing for the thrill ahead We wanted to find something that no one s been down If you don t have enough speed you re going to fall into an ice cave Alaska native Jon DeVore had always dreamed of skiing the area DeVore and team spent the one and half weeks leading up to the Rowel attempting smaller stuff on nearby mountains at lower elevations And by smaller stuff I mean nobody else would ve gotten on there says Scott Serfas the photographer along for the mission a documentary on the trip The Unrideables is available on iTunes in February Jon was pointing out faces that aren t skiable First and foremost we wanted to find something that no one s ever been down before says DeVore And nobody has ridden mountains that give four minute runs The lines they picked were carefully dissected with each pass of the plane and study of the map The best runs are the ones that go to plan where the riders have enough speed to
