him on song and their keyboard player Russ Irwin accompanying him I didn t recognize the song but it must have been an old blues standard and it sounded really cool Then it was time for one of the highlights of the show Steven and Joe sat down in chairs at the end of the catwalk Joe with a 12 string acoustic guitar and started up Hangman Jury I couldn t believe it cause I ve never heard that one live either It was soooooo good They did a couple of verses and the chorus before segueing into Seasons of Wither The first verse and chorus was acoustic and then the whole band joined in I love the eerie sound of the main riff in Seasons and Brad Whitford s little outro solo sounded great The Brad sure has great tone Next up was Dream On Everytime I hear it can t help thinking that Steven was only 18 when he wrote it It s definitely a crowd pleaser and people brought out their lighters Then it was time for highlight number two Before the show I had seen the sound guys testing a Gibson SG guitar I thought this was interesting cause I can t recall ever seeing Joe using one Well he was using it for S O S Too Bad I ve never heard that one live before either and I couldn t believe it It was so good and the solo sounded great It s such a fun song and I love the part where Steven sings I m a rat rat Livin on the Edge came next Joe played a black double necked guitar for this one really cool But then came the biggest surprise ever Steven introduces Joe and says he will do a song now I figured it was time for Stop Messin Around but man was I mistaken Instead Joe said they were going to do a song they used to play when they first started out and that he wasn t even sure it was on an album The song was the Yardbirds cover Think About It it is on an album Night in the Ruts I couldn t believe my luck that I would get to hear a song they haven t played live more than a handful of times since the seventies It was so fucking great My wife and I were singing along to every word but I think many didn t know it They did a little jam in it where Brad and Joe traded of playing lead You could tell that they hadn t done this song in a long time because they kept eye contact the whole time It was pretty cool to witness It seems like they just decided to do the song on the fly cause it was not on the original setlist Joe said afterwards that this is what we in Boston call an almost train wreck but I thought it sounded

I Believe and I can still remember the thrill when Jon Bon Jovi came running on to the stage just in time for the first verse I had never before experienced a feeling like this I sang along to every song I knew for the entire concert In hindsight I was probably annoying the hell out of the woman in the fringed black suede jacket next to me This was the last tour for original Bon Jovi bass player Alec John Such and I actually remember him messing up the intro to Keep The Faith I wasn t surprised when the band let him go before recording These Days One of my favorite parts of the show that I remember to this day was Dry County especially Jon Bon Jovi s frantic speech in the middle of the song Sadly this is the only time I ve seen them play Dry County Born To Be My Baby was another favorite of mine from the show and I think it may have been one of the first times I heard it At the time the only Bon Jovi albums I owned were Keep The Faith Slippery When Wet and Jon Bon Jovi s solo album Blaze of Glory Young Guns II For the encore Richie Sambora entered the stage wearing a long leather coat and a cowboy hat He sat on a bar stool and played the awesome Midnight Rider before the rest of the band joined him for Wanted Dead or Alive The last song of the night was Livin On A Prayer They had pyrotechnics going off at the start of the chorus I remember these big red revolving cherry lights at both sides of the stage before the pyro went off warning the band not to stand too close Prior to the show we had bought cigarette lighters that we waved around for the ballads I fondly remember the time of the cigarette lighters every time I go to concerts these days I can t really remember when that phenomenon stopped Now everyone turns on their cellphone lights instead for the slow numbers But there s not quite the same excitement in that and you don t run the risk of getting second degree burns on your fingers when it s time to put away the lighter after keeping it lit for four minutes man that would hurt like hell I still have the concert t shirt I bought in town before the show It s all tattered and worn but you can still make out the Keep The Faith cover on the front Some time in the late nineties I actually got hold of a VHS bootleg recording of this concert The quality isn t exactly great but it is still a great keepsake Last time I watched it was for the 10 year anniversary in 2003 so I guess I ll bring it out again in four years time I should get it transferred to DVD

very happy to have some concerts to look forward to First up is Muse in a couple of weeks Their new album is really growing on me or am I growing on you as Justin Hawkins of The Darkness so subtly put it Written by Daniel No Comments Chad Smith s Bombastic Meatbats 2009 09 19 Posted in Music Musings Being a huge Red Hot Chili Peppers and Chickenfoot fan I just have to write about Chad Smith s new project Chad Smith s Bombastic Meatbats Chad has teamed up with guitarist Jeff Kollman Ed Roth on keyboards and bass player Kevin Chown for a funk rock outing Their album Meet The Meatbats was released on September 15th and reached number 9 on the iTunes Jazz chart yesterday according to a tweet by Chad himself Meet The Meatbats is an instrumental album The style is somewhere in the funk jazz fusion realm but it doesn t feel contrived like a lot of music in that genre has a tendency to do It is fun music with a nice funky groove to it quite reminiscent of classic RHCP In an interview on The Preston and Steve Show on Philadelphia s WMMR radio station Chad talked about how the record might not be for everyone but how it s a fun record and not just a bunch of guys trying to play a million notes a minute Chad also talked about how he is scheduled to start writing songs with Red Hot Chili Peppers on October 12th and because of that there won t be a proper tour with the Meatbats He went on to say that the Chili s writing process would most likely take around six months and that hopefully they d have an album out by this time next year I can t wait for new Chili Peppers material and a tour but it would be really nice if Chickenfoot managed to squeeze in one more European tour during the winter Chickenfoot are by far the biggest surprise hit this year if you ask me The pure joy displayed by all four members when they play live makes for a fantastic show But for now broaden your horizon and check out Chad Smith s Bombastic Meatbats As a side note I have to mention that Chad also talked about how he likes to throw drumsticks to the crowd as long as they pay attention and don t get hit in the head Hmm wonder what he could have possibly been referring to Written by Daniel 4 Comments Davy Knowles Back Door Slam 2009 09 14 Posted in Music Musings For the past couple of weeks I ve been listening to the British blues rocker Davy Knowles Back Door Slam Davy writes the songs perform vocal duties and play a mean guitar I discovered the band because they are the opening act for Chickenfoot on their U S tour and in every Chickenfoot review I ve read people are praising

Marsden and bassist Emma Richardson and Russell s guitar sounds are great Favorite track Death By Diamonds and Pearls Chickenfoot Chickenfoot This was a surprise to me I had no expectations whatsoever on this album but it turned out to be really great You can tell that they re really enjoying themselves I can t imagine that neither Van Halen or Red Hot Chili Peppers could pull off an album this vibrant at this stage in their careers It just goes to show what working with new people can do for your inspiration Favorite track Future in the Past The Dead Weather Horehound Jack White s third band The Dead Weather put out a dirty blues rock album This is one of those albums that needs time to grow but once you get familiarized with it it is fantastic I find myself listening to it at least once a week Favorite track Treat Me Like Your Mother Muse The Resistance Just like Horehound The Resistance needs time to grow But it turns out that Matt Bellamy and Co have once again created a masterpiece Favorite track Uprising Franz Ferdinand Tonight Franz Ferdinand I love the electro rock sound they ve taken on with this album Favorite track Lucid Dreams Written by Daniel Posted in Music Musings 2 Responses to Top 5 Albums of 2009 Irma says 2010 01 03 at 11 32 Aha Your list was EXACTLY as mine except that in the end I decided to switch out Band of Skulls for Gossip The reason for this was just that I ended up listening to Gossip a LOT more But the BoS Cd is so good Sort of makes me want to declare a top 6 instead LOL I agree with what you wrote but I ll list my

all over it However I have a better suggestion How about approaching Kid Rock about fronting a new band in the same way that the remaining Rage Against The Machine members joined forces with Chris Cornell to form Audioslave Now I know Kid Rock has a very prosperous career of his own and the Twisted Brown Trucker Band is one of the best backing bands around but let s just imagine the awesomeness Kid Rock is a huge Aerosmith fan and he has opened for them and played with them on numerous occasions I think it would be a really great collaboration Imagine a live show composed of classic Aerosmith songs and Kid Rock s southern rock plus an album of all new songs I also think Kid Rock has the voice needed to pull off all the classic Aerosmith songs from the seventies So here is my plea to Joe Perry Give Bob Ritchie a call who knows what could happen Written by Daniel Posted in Music Musings 6 Responses to Steven Tyler Leaving Aerosmith My Suggested Replacement Irma says 2009 11 06 at 21 56 Now THAT I d go see But still like you said failure written ALL over it Sad really Irma says 2009 11 06 at 22 00 To clarify I don t mean Kid Rock would a failure Just that calling it Aerosmith would be a failure But I could totally see Bob Ritchie doing something pretty amazing with the band Siabur says 2009 11 06 at 22 56 I think something like what Black Sabbath did when RJ Dio took Ozzy s place Sabbath wasn t the same to they became Heaven and Hell This would preserve Aerosmiths legacy Luna says 2009 11 07 at 02 06 I agree completely There is no

of space which I think producer Rick Rubin is most responsible for It s a very straight forward album with a minimum amount of overdubs All seventeen songs are so strong that they don t need to be overproduced and layered I must admit that I was not instantly hooked on the album when it was released In fact it probably took me a couple of years to realize its brilliance story of my life But a good testament to the longevity of an album is that it takes a while to understand the songs I think it s brilliant that they have hidden the hit singles Give it Away and Under the Bridge in the middle of the album I ve always felt that when an album opens with a single it tends to take away from the rest of the songs because singles are usually so direct and easily recognizable that they sort of take your head out of album mode and then you don t have the patience to concentrate on the more complicated songs that follow I know I m just rambling now but hopefully someone knows where I m coming from with this BSSM is the second Red Hot Chili Peppers album with John Frusciante on guitar and this is when the band found what is now their trademark sound If I remember correctly the Chili Peppers all rented a house together where they lived and recorded the album Drummer Chad Smith was the only one who wasn t staying at the house John Frusciante s guitar parts were reportedly recorded in his upstairs bedroom I really love the entire album but I must mention a few favorite songs Opening track The Power of Equality with John s warbly guitar sound is just fantastic I
