Rough Guides Snapshot Tanzania Zanzibar View Guide Egypt is the oldest tourist destination on earth Ancient Greeks and Romans started the trend coming to goggle at the cyclopean scale of the Pyramids and the Colossi of Thebes During colonial times Napoleon and the British looted Egypt s treasures to fill their national museums sparking off a trickle of Grand Tourists that eventually became a flood of travellers taken on Nile cruises and Egyptological lectures by the enterprising Thomas Cook Today the most popular places to visit are not only the monuments of the Nile Valley and the souks mosques and madrassas of Islamic Cairo but also fantastic coral reefs and tropical fish dunes ancient fortresses monasteries and prehistoric rock art The land itself is a freak of nature its lifeblood the River Nile From the Sudanese border to the shores of the Mediterranean the Nile Valley and its Delta are flanked by arid wastes the latter as empty as the former are teeming with people This stark duality between fertility and desolation is fundamental to Egypt s character and has shaped its development since prehistoric times imparting continuity to diverse cultures and peoples over seven millennia It is a sense of permanence and timelessness that is buttressed by religion which pervades every aspect of life Although the pagan cults of ancient Egypt are as moribund as its legacy of mummies and temples their ancient fertility rites and processions of boats still hold their place in the celebrations of Islam and Christianity The result is a multi layered culture which seems to accord equal respect to ancient and modern The peasants of the Nile and the Bedouin tribes of the desert live much as their ancestors did a thousand years ago Other communities include the Nubians of the far south and

Casablanca a more distant past constantly makes its presence felt Fez perhaps the most beautiful of all Arab cities maintains a life still rooted in medieval times when a Moroccan kingdom stretched from Senegal to northern Spain while in the mountains of the Atlas and the Rif it s still possible to draw up tribal maps of the Berber population As a backdrop to all this the country s physical make up is extraordinary from the Mediterranean coast through four mountain ranges to the empty sand and scrub of the Sahara Across much of the country the legacy of colonial occupation is still felt in many aspects of daily life The Spanish zone contained Tetouan and the Rif the Mediterranean and the northern Atlantic coasts Sidi Ifni the Tarfaya Strip and the Western Sahara the French zone the plains and the main cities Fez Marrakesh Casablanca and Rabat as well as the Atlas And while Ceuta and Melilla are still the territory of Spain it is the French who ruled their protectorate more closely who had the most lasting effect on Moroccan culture Europeanizing the cities to a strong degree and firmly imposing their language which is spoken today by all educated Moroccans after Moroccan Arabic or one of the three local Berber languages This blend of the exotic and the familiar the diversity of landscapes the contrasts between Ville Nouvelle and ancient Medina all add up to make Morocco an intense and rewarding experience and a country that is ideally suited to independent travel with enough time you can cover a whole range of activities from hiking in the Atlas and relaxing at laidback Atlantic resorts like Asilah or Essaouira to getting lost in the back alleys of Fez and Marrakesh It can be hard at times to come

vast Karoo semi desert across its heart and one of Africa s premier safari destinations Kruger National Park in the northeast It s also one of the great cultural meeting points of the African continent a fact obscured by decades of enforced racial segregation but now manifest in the big cities Many visitors are pleasantly surprised by South Africa s excellent infrastructure which draws favourable comparison with countries such as Australia or the United States Good air links and bus networks excellent roads and a growing number of first class B Bs and guesthouses make South Africa a perfect touring country For those on a budget mushrooming backpacker hostels and backpacker buses provide cost efficient means of exploring the vast number of places to visit Yet despite all these facilities South Africa is also something of an enigma after nearly two decades of non racial democracy the rainbow nation is still struggling to find its identity Apartheid may be dead but its heritage still shapes South Africa in a very physical way Nowhere is this more evident than in the layout of towns and cities the African areas generally poor are usually tucked out of sight South Africa s population doesn t reduce simply to black and white The majority are Africans 79 5 percent of the population whites make up nine percent followed by coloureds just under nine percent the descendants of white settlers slaves and Africans who speak English and Afrikaans and comprise the majority in the Western Cape The rest 2 5 percent resident mainly in KwaZulu Natal are descendants of Indians who came to South Africa at the beginning of the twentieth century as indentured labourers Even these statistics don t tell the whole story A better indication of South Africa s diversity is the plethora
