  • Surviving A Water Crisis: How to Make an Emergency Water Filter
filters are fairly low cost but are often bundled with fancy containers and big brand names that can add hundreds of dollars to the price In reality though you can make your own water filter systems at a much lower cost This has been proven by missionary groups and NGOs in disaster situations all around the world Two pictures are presented below in lieu of a few more pages of text to explain how these systems can be made and used The picture on the left is made from a couple of 5 gallon buckets with the filter in the middle Though you can use any type of containers when building your system the basic design is almost always the same A top container holding the unfiltered water and the filter and a bottom container to catch the clean water that drips from the filter spout The picture on the right shows the parts that make up an emergency kit which is used to create the system at left Currently this kit sells for only 25 These systems are portable require no power are very simple to create and maintain and are low cost They can be used with just about any freshwater source as has been proven throughout the world for the last couple of decades by a multitude of refugees How much water and how fast One of the first questions most people have is How much water are these filters good for There are two answers for this question The filter will remove bacteria and particulates for as long as the ceramic shell is intact The pores in the ceramic can get clogged over time but it is easy to unclog them by using a slight abrasive to remove the outermost clogged layer of shell Chemicals are treated by the activated carbon inside which is used up after 6 to 8 months of normal use Normal assumes 12 to 15 gallons per day from a natural water source This implies the carbon will last for 3000 to 4000 gallons The carbon s lifespan will be shortened if the water contains a lot of chemicals such as chlorine The filters can be stored indefinitely and used intermittently provided they are dried out well inbetween uses A 5 gallon bucket can produce 12 to 15 gallons per day The amount of clean water a system can produce in a day is another question most people have The water flow of a filter dripping out of the spout depends on the water level in the upper container so as the water level decreases the flow rate slows For a standard 5 gallon bucket the flow rate is 12 to 15 gallons per day assuming the bucket is refilled a few times This is plenty of water for drinking and basic needs for a family However one can easily increase the flow rates if larger groups or bartering applications are needed A very simple method to increase flow rates is to

  • 50 Critical Items to Survive Disaster
your target you can more easily retrieve your arrow from the surrounding brush Take down elk deer moose dangerous dogs and even African lions with a crossbow or if you ve got the experience a compound bow 11 Long Range Rifle and Ammunition Great for hunting wildlife at long range It is easier to hunt with a rifle as you can be further away with less risk of your scent being picked up than a person with a compound bow or crossbow who typically needs to be within closer range of an animal in order to get a good shot Have a few long range rifles for troop movement by troop I mean the people you are traveling with including any kids women and even any elderly Tip If you want to survive in a time of widespread disaster or even the apocalypse or Great Tribulation that many are expecting is right around the corner you need to think of your group as a team and ultimately as a platoon or troop A little discipline and organization can go a long way to helping your platoon survive should dangerous wildlife or people threaten your lives Organize a formation train train and train some more with your group days and weeks beforehand be able to move and fire in unison while covering angles of incoming fire Organization will give you strategies for escaping an ambush should enemies suddenly show up on all sides If you fight as a team rather than individuals you re a much bigger force to be reckoned with which is exactly the reason that the first armies started winning wars early on in history Train to be ambushed Teach your team what an ambush might look like and different ways to react and adapt to the terrain Train to escape 12 Bear Pepper Spray Use it on grizzly bears mountain lions and crooks crooks that aren t pointing a gun at you Bear pepper spray is a good secondary weapon that children in your group could be considered being trained to fight with you might not trust them with a gun but they might be just fine with pepper spray as long as they don t freeze from fear Tip In a time of disaster put children through some training scenarios to help them be prepared for the day of battle Pepper spray is a last resort weapon as it s typically only effective in close encounters when an animal or a person is closing in Teach them to spray and run but make that spray count The closer they let the animal or person get the better chances they have of the pepper spray striking it s target with maximum impact Teach them to be fearless Make them realize that pepper spray when used at the right moment is a very effective weapon at disabling an opponent and creating a few minutes of time to make an escape or it simply creates time to grab a follow up weapon such as a knife or spear If we can teach kids to play baseball and football we can also teach kids how to fight and beat the bad guys when there s no other escape possible Teach them to move laterally to the side like a running back on the football field side stepping from a charging linebacker Spray dodge run 13 Picks and Shovels There s a great chance that the ground underneath you is going to have rocks or be hard packed and simply not easy to dig with a shovel Break up the ground with a pick until you have plenty of loose dirt then shovel the loose dirt away and return to using the pick If you plan to be rooted in place for a period of time having a few good picks and shovels around can be very useful With a small group working as a team large areas can be dug relatively quickly such as underground shelters and even tunnel systems learn the ins and outs of digging tunnels before you simply try to dig one yourself not knowing what you re doing is a quick way to die when the sides or roof collapse Note If you plan on being part of any community r ebuilding effort following a disaster don t just have one pick or shovel stored away have a few of each Digging is one task that you will appreciate having multiple people with multiple picks and shovels at work beside you Shoveling is hard work especially when a task takes many hours or even days to complete 14 Axe You can easily take down small trees with a good axe as well as chop firewood Don t use the axe on anything but wood and never whack through wood without something else made of wood underneath it You ll chip your axe head on rocks if you do that 15 Axe Sharpener Keep your axe head sharp and able to cut through wood with a good axe sharpener 16 Chainsaw You ll get through trees a lot faster with a chainsaw than you would with an axe The chainsaw is going to be most effective in the early weeks and months of a widespread disaster when there is still fuel to be had Use it while you have it If you ve never used a chainsaw be sure you re shown how to keep the blade sharp as well The points can dull up on you See How to Sharpen a Chainsaw Blade 17 Bow Saw A good bow saw has a lot of life in it and can be used to cut through hundreds of large tree limbs and small trees When it comes to survival tree limbs and small trees can be used to construct everything from small cabins to defense walls around the perimeter of your camp sharpen the points to help keep out dangerous wildlife as well as intruders 18 Survival Knife Bowie Knife A good knife will go a long ways from skinning an animal to cutting rope to simply scaring off a crook with a knife of his own Use it to carve markings in trees to mark your path and signal others in your group to specific locations 19 Rope You can never have too much rope If you have a lot of rope you can do everything from complicated tasks such as bridge building for river creek crossings to simpler tasks such as pulley systems for hoisting objects into the trees then of course there s the basic use of rope which is simply tying one object to another object like a tarp to the top of a shelter or a goat to a tree to be used as bait to draw in a lion or pack of wolves to an ambush where you and your team are waiting close by with weapons aimed 20 Paracord Many uses for paracord like this TOUGH GRID military spec rated at 750lbs When living outdoors you re going to find that you need rope string to tie many things Paracord has it s origins in parachutes what makes paracord different from traditional rope is that it s made of many strings the guts of the paracord woven together inside a sheath of sorts the outer casing When cut the guts are revealed which can be unwound and used as individual thin strings for everything from emergency fishing line to shoelaces An open flame will melt the paracord ends sealing the casing again enabling the paracord to continue it s life as paracord just a bit shorter now with each length that you ve cut from the original 21 Tarp Great way to weatherproof any shelter or provide temporary relief from the sun or rain Also can be used as a rain water harvesting system where each corner is tied to a fixed location and the lowest corner acts as a drain spillway for any rain that is collected that s one method Tarp can also be used to build solar stills If you re in a position to stockpile supplies stockpile tons of tarp Like rope you can never have too much tarp 22 Nails Roofing Nails Plywood High winds from a hurricane or tornado may have ripped shingles or even part of your roof or wall to your home away You can do repairs with plywood as well as shingles you find around the neighborhood after the storm has past use roofing nails for the shingles Tarp also goes a long way to repairing roofs and walls that have been damaged by high winds or even fallen trees Stockpile plywood You can build sheds and even small cabins living units on your property with plywood nails and tree limbs 23 Contractor Grade Garbage Bags Waste Disposal These things are a lot bigger up to 55 gallons and a lot stronger than typical heavy duty residential garbage bags You ll find many uses for these bags and will appreciate having them around in a time of disaster With water and sewer lines broken throughout the area working toilets will be a thing of the past for many Your group will have to turn to chamber pots for solids and these solids can then be dumped into large contractor garbage bags and then tied shut and even buried It will go a long way to reducing the stench of human waste that is likely to build up around your camp or property after many weeks or months Stockpile contractor grade garbage bags They can also be used as a rain poncho just cut out holes for your head and arms as well as an emergency make shift shelter you may need two or three for that 24 Bleach A little bleach can go a long way Have a second container that is mostly water Use the mixture to sterilize knives and utensils and clean up cutting areas after any meat has been cut or deer elk butchered Stockpile bleach How to Use Bleach to Prevent Food Contamination 25 Gasoline If you have an emergency generator you can produce electricity after a disaster Of course you re going to need fuel to power it Have fuel on hand as well for your car should you be in a position where your automobile can be used for travel such as in an evacuation or if you simply live in a rural or semi rural area that is not heavily congested by millions of people in an evacuation Fuel gasoline not diesel is also a great way to get a fire started in wet conditions A little gasoline can go a long way in that regard 26 Mess Kit A good mess kit contains compact pots and pans that are designed to work as a set and pack within each other to compress to take up the least amount of space as possible in a backpack These have been carried by soldiers in various armies as well as popular with modern day backpackers who don t want to pack typical pots and pans along as they re heavy and take up too much space One difference between someone who camps and someone who backpacks is often a mess kit 27 Whistles Whistles are a great way to signal that you need help if you re out in the wilderness or to communicate with others in your party who are within ear shot such as rescue workers or backcountry skiers who have drifted away from each other In times of lawlessness or war whistles can be used by people posted as watchman on the outskirts of camp to alert the camp that an intruder or worse an invading force had been spotted Survival Tip Caution About Whistles If you re traveling through an area and you hear whistles or whistling be on the alert immediately Someone may have spotted your group and is calling in bandits or gang members for an attack You or your group may be about to be jumped robbed or raped In the inner cities street gangs or simply criminals can use whistling to signal that a victim you has come into their neighborhood If you hear a series of sharp whistles this could be a signal for an attack Pull out your weapons and make a run for it it may not be smart to stand your ground because you just don t know how many are coming and whether or not anyone will show up in a nearby window with a rifle and pick you off like a military sniper Just get out of there 28 Signal Mirror Use it to signal other people in your group camped or positioned a distance away from you if you have a communication system set up then you can even communicate simple commands with flashes of a signaling mirror at one another think morse code Also use it to signal overhead aircraft should you be lost and you know that they re searching for you You can also use it on the shore to signal ocean going boats that you re lost or stranded See How to Use a Signal Mirror 29 Machete Great way to clear away brush Great way to slash at the face of a dangerous animal though most people will end up maimed or killed if they try this It just depends on how fierce and on target your initial slice is if you can hit with pin point accuracy and you ve got a good machete with a sharp edge and some weight to it and your first strike is right across an eye and face that animal that has attacked you may back off for a few moments trying to regain it s sight Continue to hack at it s face destroying it s ability to see and then take that opportunity to run or pull out a gun and open fire 30 Slingshot Highly accurate after a few hours of target practice and good for hunting small animals like squirrels and rabbits grouse and other birds One hunter came up with the idea to shoot deer pellets manufactured pellets that contain a scent for drawing deer to a hunting area into the area he would be hunting In other words from his stand he shot deer pellets in several directions up to 100 yards or so away rather than walking around and leaving his own scent Deer are highly aware of odors and if they pick up a hunter s scent will often flee without hesitation A hunter s scent can ruin the hunt But deer pellets also elk pellets are created with odors that attract deer to the area Regarding slingshots there are toy slingshots then there are others such as those made by Trumark that can project shot at a speed up to 200 miles per hour and a distance of 225 yards Yes you could kill a person with a sling shot Be careful with these Don t let untrained children run around with one of these weapons David took down Goliath with a sling It s essentially the same idea 31 Deer Elk Pellets As described above have plenty of these on hand to aid in baiting deer or elk or even moose to an area within a shooting distance of your stand 32 Propane Stov e If the power is out or your home destroyed by a disaster a propane stove is an easy way to cook food and a quality stove will give you many years of use Cook with maximum efficiency to conserve propane as well as get the most heat out of an open flame One trick is to wrap aluminum foil around the base of a pot but far enough away from the flame as to not actually burn the foil You can also do something even better than aluminum foil just by getting some thin stainless steel sheeting and cutting it bending it to the right dimensions Just one piece will go a long ways to getting more heat from your flame and you ll get a lot of use out of it 33 Nets Great way to fish in rivers as well as in the ocean Become familiar with fishing with a net and have different types of netting based on what you ll be fishing for and how you re most likely to use it People have been fishing with nets for thousands of years 34 Fishing Pole If there s any chance that you ll be fishing in salt water or when the salmon are running be sure to have yourself a strong fishing pole that can reel in a big fish and that s not going to simply snap when a 30 pound fish or bigger is on the hook Carry strong line with a high weight rating and you ll be ready for most areas If your pole does break or you lose it it s not the end of the world plenty of survivors have fished successfully with just line and a hook You can cut fishing line out of parachord just cut off a length and pull out the guts and tie yourself a fishing line Know how to find natural bait and remember you can find nightcrawlers almost anywhere there s dirt and rain 35 Mosquito Netting Keep the bugs out more and more Westerners are seeing West Nile virus the possibility for malaria taking off in North America exists as well our world is going through changes some call it Global Warming but others like myself believe this is from the direct hand of God If so we may see a lot more disease carrying mosquitoes in the years ahead Protect your homes and campsites the same way that many do currently in countries where mosquitoes are a daily threat While on the subject of mosquito netting

  • 15 Essential Survival Tips And Supplies
tool in your kit but you will thank yourself for bringing it I just buy the cheap Rayovak headlamps at Wal Mart they re lightweight and compact and I have yet to have an issue 7 400 grit sandpaper You can carry a small knife sharpener but the sand paper is a weight and space saver and gives you a quick touch up especially with the carbon steel blades like the Morakniv 510 A knife sharpener is very important because a dull knife can cause an injury that can cause an infection that can cause bigger problems than just being lost in Yellowstone 8 A small snack supply that will not melt and does not contain a lot of salt Although food isn t an immediate need a small snack can get your mind back on track energy levels up and it s always nice to know Hey I have that snack in my kit if I really need it 9 Cordage 550 paracord or really any type of strings and ropes are great Compact lightweight can be used for a million tasks including shelter construction fishing setting traps and the list goes on forever Don t go with just your boot laces and expect that to suffice 550 cord boot laces is cool and all but why give up foot security when you can just pack an extra few ounces of cordage 10 Extra socks 2 pairs You would be absolutely amazed at what a change of socks can do for your morale Plus a clean pair of socks can make a decent quick filter if the water isn t too dirty 11 Personal keychain alarm 2 Use these to be heard without using extra energy I suggest only using them if you can hear people but cannot see them Or if you are injured use one by pulling the chain and tossing away from you so you can still hear people or any approaching threats Think of this concept as the same used by firefighters when they go down inside a building A pealess whistle is a great supplement to the alarms 12 Blaze orange hunting vest 2 The cheap blaze orange vests found at Wal Mart increase your visibility especially from the air I do not suggest a signal mirror because they can break and become useless also a signal mirror may not help if skies are overcast Wear one vest and use the other as a flag to wave at aircraft or ships or whoever you may see searching for you 13 Emergency information Keep a laminated card containing information listing at least 5 emergency contacts current medications allergy information and any other information you feel may be of any importance to your rescuers Also always have your medications with you even if you don t take them every day or just once a day 14 Compass and map A compass and map is compact and lightweight and could allow you to lead yourself to rescue if you are physically able to do so These items can also lead you to water and areas of high visibility 15 Firearm where allowed I suggest a 12 gauge PUMP ACTION shotgun because pump actions are the most reliable and that anyone sensitive to the recoil practice until they can handle it In a regular situation you re not trying to be stealthy you re trying to stay alive until you re found It s unlikely you will have to resort to hunting during your average situation but if needed you can carry a lot of different types of ammo and kill anything on the planet with a 12 gauge I took the time to contact hunting guides in Africa to make sure a 3 inch 12 gauge slug will kill an elephant and they said yes so it is definitely extremely effective bear defense Also if you do have to hunt why would you want to shoot an animal 200 yards away and have to walk 200 yards to get it and so on My specific suggestion which gun snobs will hate is as follows Mossberg Maverick 88 field model a 28 inch barrel is long yes but it is accurate Don t get all short barrel tactical and miss the charging bear all 6 times This firearm comes with a plug in the magazine tube so you remove the barrel and with stock up shake the weapon lightly to remove the plug if you prefer 6 shots over 3 Ammo Six 2 3 4 inch number 5 lead birdshot for small game Six 3 inch slugs for defense against bears moose free range cattle or any other big game type animals Six 2 3 4 inch 00 buckshot 3 inch if you prefer for defense against mountain lions wolves and other smaller dangerous animals The ammo listed is what I carry It s all about preference but make sure you can kill what you are shooting at Make sure your shotgun has a sling Mine is made with tubular webbing 8 000 lb tensile strength per my own personal preference Remember the items listed are not a complete list of possible items and all kits are most effective when based on the needs of the individual You can add a good Leatherman pocket knife and multi tool or a Fresnel lense or whatever works for you A number of items can replace a firearm I just feel it is important to eliminate the myth that you have to have a 1 000 gun that shoots 2 miles or requires you to have full combat gear to carry 7 magazines or that you need 40 guns and ammo that you can t even take with you and I am a bow fanatic but it s not exactly my first choice to put down a charging bear Next I will share my personal 15 survival tips Again this is a basic list of essential tips to keep in mind

  • Living Of the Land - Cold Weather Survival Gear
But to safely use either one a small amount of ventilation is needed in your tent as both of these heaters will burn up oxygen and you can be poisoned by too much carbon dioxide left in the air once that oxygen is gone The Importance of Ventilation Ventilation is a good thing to have in a winter tent shelter which is as simple as leaving a small opening where ever you can create it to allow fresh air into your tent You see without ventilation your breath which is trapped in an enclosed tent will turn into condensation on the walls and roof and that in turn will turn to ice and then snow as it falls from the walls and roof and now you are wet and cold and so is your gear With or without a tent heater ventilation is a key element of a winter shelter So when either of these tent heaters calls for ventilation it is not a bad thing Trust me you will get plenty of heat too much heat if might seem at times if you re using canvas tarps described above as an insulating layer in your shelter and that will help keep you warm sometimes extremely warm in cold winter temperatures A Few Tips 1 Make Your Propane Last Make your propane last by only running your tent heater when you are awake in the evening and then being careful to turn it off just before you go to bed 2 Purchase a Cold Weather Sleeping Bag System If you re properly prepared for the cold you should have a cold weather sleeping bag system which includes a bivy sack which will help protect your inner sleeping bag layers from any outside biting chill or accident with rain or water that can happen One popular and proven cold weather sleeping bag system is a military patrol bag now being sold as military surplus These bags are made from synthetic materials not made with a goose down filler which can lose all insulating properties if your bag gets wet and thus the patrol bag above is a smarter choice when faced with potentially wet and cold winter conditions A mummy style shape these conform better to your body than a rectangular shaped sleeping bag More importantly two layers of this system are equipped with drawstring cords that will pull the head of each bag around your head like a hood leaving only your face exposed to prevent enclosing your head within the bag while you sleep which is bad in cold conditions your breath will condense inside the bag and sleeping bag get wet thus the reason for the opening left by the drawstring hood A look at brand name down sleeping bags can come with a price of nearly 400 for a bag that s only rated to 20 degrees The patrol bag on the other hand when both inner bags are snapped together and have the outer bivy in place are rated from 10 to 30 degrees If a wind chill brings you to below that let s say 40 to 50 degrees your Under Armour ColdGear mentioned at the top of this article wool socks and a wool stocking cap or fleece balaclava will work as an additional layer to defend against the cold 3 Protect Electronics and Water Bottles and liquid based hygiene items by sleeping with them next to your body In temperatures well below freezing you can wake up with a frozen water bottle and now you re not going to have anything liquid to drink Sensitive electronics if you have any can be damaged by the cold read product specs for anything you might be carrying The solution for both is to wrap these sensitive items in a stocking cap or wool sock and simply place inside your sleeping bag where your body heat will keep these items warm through the night and protect from freezing 4 If there s a chance of snow create your ventilation near the top or mid section of your tent Ventilation along the bottom of your tent can be blocked by snow and now you re in a sealed tent If using a tent heater like either mentioned above you are now in danger of oxygen depletion During severe snowfall you may want to bring a section of curved pvc pipe and suspend it through the tent window just about all tents have zippered windows with the angle of the pipe pointing down so that snow cannot fall inside and potentially block the opening and then position the pipe in place using 24 gauge wire or 20 gauge wire or military spec paracord 5 Large Pee bottle One thing that you will not want to do is leave the confines of your tent in the middle of a freezing night to urinate should nature call That s a fast way to lose body heat and it s a hassle Keep a large bottle you want a bottle big enough should you need it more than once that night inside your tent that you can relieve yourself in easily Women have a challenge as urinating in a bottle is not as easy as a man is going to have it Seriously though and lucky for a lot of women who venture into the outdoors Go Girl sells a female urination device 6 Warning About Bottled Water Make sure that any bottled water or pee bottle has a screw top cap In the dark of the night after your lanterns and flashlights are off you can knock over bottles if having to fumble around in the dark for any reason If you spill any liquids in your tent because of weak bottle caps that can easily pop off that can spell disaster during the winter months You must take excessive caution to keep your sleeping bag and evening clothing dry Wet gear can mean a fast ticket to hypothermia not

  • The Top 15 Primitive Weapons for the Apocalypse
to take down an elephant could be a quick way to get killed But ten men with ten spears working together could take that elephant down without injury to life or limb That is going to call for courage and strength though and people who are quick on their feet Once you strike a dangerous animal you have to be able to quickly move out of the way if it lunges for you even though it s been wounded If you re hunting smaller game like boar and wild pigs in the tropics just one spear should do the trick A spear for boar or wild pigs doesn t have to be as big a spear as you d use on a lion grizzly bear elephant or moose Not unless you re boar hunting in a region known for giant hogs and there are a few regions in the world At 600 pounds these things can kill Going after a hog this size with just spears may call for several people working as a team There are different options for spears Some spears can be outfitted with sharp rocks and even spear heads made from steel When neither sharp rocks or steel spear heads are on hand simply sharpening the wooden tip of a spear base and then fire hardening it can be enough to turn a harmless piece of wood into a dangerous weapon Tip Your tool shed may have rakes and shovels old ones that you can break the metal parts off and simply use the handles as spears if you ever needed a spear in a time of collapse Atlatl The atlatl is a revolutionary invention from early history it s commonly called a spear thrower It s a stick or board with a hooked end that works like a rock in a sling instead of throwing a rock though an atlatl throws a small spear which is actually more like a long arrow The spears for an atlatl or made from a wood that has a wobble to it creating a spring effect in the air that aids to the spear s velocity once it s been thrown Clumsy to use at first it s a highly effective weapon once a person has used it enough times The atlatl adds speed and distance to the flight of a thrown spear Today there are atlatl clubs and organizations and even states like Montana that allow atlatls to be used to hunt game like deer Sling Slings have been used for hunting small game as well as in combat The most famous combat depiction of a sling s potential for taking life is the Bible s story of David and Goliath 1 Samuel 17 32 50 David the shepherd rises to the challenge of the Philistine s prized warrior Goliath tallest and biggest man on the battlefield David arms his sling with a rock whirls it overhead and let s the rock fly it hits dead on target colliding with Goliath s skull and he falls to the ground dead Let s consider that David was a shepherd for a moment Many shepherds throughout history were trained to use a sling to help protect livestock namely sheep they were protecting from predators such as wolves and lions If all shepherds had was a sling that seems to say that hurling a few well aimed rocks at a lion or lions could send the entire pack running As a weapon of battle the sling is given high marks it s a devastating weapon in the hands of someone skilled with a sling See The Sling in Medieval Europe Bola A bola is thrown by hand like a sling but instead of a rock being the projectile the entire bola becomes the projectile And rather than the target being a person s or animal s head with a bola the legs are the target The bola s primary purpose is to entangle itself around legs so a person or animal trips and falls over Many bolas have three weights tied to three separate ends of rope each of the ropes connected to one another at a middle joint One weight is grabbed and held on to while the other two are whirled over head and then the entire bola is let go streaking over the landscape either hitting or missing the target either wrapping around the legs or failing to wrap around the legs Like a sling a bola is going to call for many years of training to become proficient at its use Dagger A large knife used solely for self defense and fighting for stabbing and thrusting motions This is a weapon for up close and very dangerous and bloody fighting It s also a weapon of last resort when attacked by a large dangerous animal if you re a bold fighter you can stab a dagger into the side of an animal that has you pinned numerous fast vicious stabs may be enough to make it run or even kill it As you re being attacked keep stabbing don t go into shock Fight until the animal let s up and backs off Sword There s a reason that just about every army in ancient history had soldiers that carried swords it s length weight and sharpened edges can be deadly in close quarters combat Modern day experts say that true swordsmanship doesn t look anything like what TV and movies often depict sword fights In Hollywood sword fights are often depicted with fluid and coordinated moves typically seen in Asian martial arts a little bit showy in real life however experts say a sword fight between two warriors who have been trained to fight with swords is going to look more like close quarters combat the fight won t look like a show It will look like a fight See Sword Fighting Not What You Think It Is Blowgun A blowgun is a small sometimes larger

the water is deep and the fish are REALLY big How would a Speargun help you Fish for Dinner With the flooding fish and other sea creatures will be given a new habitat The most obvious answer will be that you can use a speargun to catch them Protection from Sharks It is hard to say what the conditions of these habitats will be like For example if a coastal city gets flooded lots of different types of pollution will leak into the ocean killing a wide variety of wildlife Being that they are much smaller feeder fish would be the first to die in this scenario leaving their predators which are much larger and could possibly survive the conditions with nothing to eat When you dive into the water to fix the leak on your boat do you want a pocket knife or a man at your back with a speargun to protect you Personal Protection Another obvious scenario is that bullets will be hard to come by Your speargun could double for self protection and a way to catch dinner Similar to a crossbow you can reuse your projectile to defend yourself Keep in mind you can only use a band gun on the surface and it probably will not be that accurate Neither type of gun is designed for the surface but you especially do not want to use a pneumatic out of the water It fires quickly and will shatter its muzzle if fired outside of the water What about eating underwater predators Clearly you can use your speargun to shoot a shark or any other type of really large fish Before you start gunning down sharks you will have to ask yourself if your speargun is big enough To catch a fish that is larger than 100 pounds you will need a multi band gun They are exactly what they sound like larger spearguns with 2 or more bands that fire a single spear These types of guns have A LOT of power tend to be very large have a longer loading time and can be very expensive One brand that specializes in this style of guns is Andre Spearguns If your goal is survival chances are a smaller gun would be more practical They have a faster loading time and are capable of catching most types of fish For example if you are desperately trying to survive in an environment that does not have a lot of food you want a speargun you can quickly reload This way if you fire your weapon and miss you can quickly reload and get back to hunting whereas with a multi band gun might take you a few minutes to reload Keep in mind if you have a smaller speargun hunting a shark or any larger fish will likely damage your equipment For instance if you shoot a fish that is too big when it puts up a fight and tries to get away it might bend or break your speargun Technically a medium sized Barracuda that weighs around 70 pounds is still a predator and you do not have to focus on catching sharks Personally I would try to hunt more passive fish i e a large Grouper you will be able to get plenty of meat from a fish of this size If you are truly in a survival situation hunting anything larger might be more trouble than it is worth You risk damaging your gear and you lack the refrigeration to store them As a side note I personally do not support hunting sharks for sport Many species of sharks are quickly diminishing and they play an important role in the ocean Although I am certainly not an expert in shark biology from what I understand many species of sharks urinate though their skin There are species of shark you can eat but those that release excrement though their skin probably will not taste very good Most spearfishermen also referred to as a spearos view themselves as watermen a group of people that want to protect the ocean for future generations Unless it is a dire situation and you have no choice DO NOT take something from the ocean that you do not plan on consuming Currently what most underwater hunters do is use their speargun for protection during a shark encounter For example in places like South Africa running into sharks while spearfishing is somewhat common It is better to wait at the surface don t panic or splash and keep an eye on the shark until it leaves Here is an example of a spearos encounter with a shark from YouTube Notice how he doesn t fire his speargun he simply uses it as a precaution if matters turn for the worst https www youtube com watch v hYxmVGhabRk Where can you learn to use a Speargun and Spearfishing If you live fairly close to any body of water including a few lakes chances are there is a spearfishing club in your area The sport is quickly becoming very popular and there are lots of different communities around the world to help you get started An example of a community is the South Florida Spearfishing Club they are a highly organized group of men and women based in Florida who regularly go spearfishing It is important to at least learn from an experienced spearo how to operate your speargun After all they are very dangerous and can possibly harm or kill another individual Whenever you perform any type of sport that involves going in the ocean you never want to go alone always bring a friend or make new ones at your local club Is there any type of certification you should get If you want to take your spearfishing to the next level freediving classes are always a good idea For the most part most spearos prefer NOT to use scuba tanks The only gears most spearos use are a mask

  • Primus OmniLite Ti Multi-fuel stove - Survival Tool Review
Following a time of collapse gasoline and other fuels will likely be hard to come by because no fuel stations are likely to be in operation Major stores closed and looted Martial law Regional war Global war Mass starvation Don t expect your local Chevron or Texaco to be selling gas and snack food We re talking post apocalypse following a massive global series of events that has taken place But even if gas stations are not in operation anywhere there are a million other places a smart survivor can get fuel for example abandoned vehicles which in a post apocalypse you can expect to be a lot of in a number of places Siphoning Fuel Safely If a vehicle is abandoned and there s no chance that it s owner is coming back for it you have two ways to get to its fuel supply One is to siphon it from the tank with a manufactured hose and pump that s the safest way and the other is to crawl underneath the vehicle with a catch pan and poke a hole in the gas tank just don t use any sparking tools Gas or diesel if this is a diesel truck will drain out of the bottom of the tank you just poked a hole in Fill your Primus fuel bottle s and you now have fuel for at least a few hours of cooking or possible driving should you get your hands on a motorbike or moped Be sure not to mix diesel with gasoline or you ll dilute the burning properties of both fuels Instead fill your bottle with either straight gasoline or straight diesel The Primus OmniLite Ti stove comes with three jets each with a different diameter measured for the specific fuel type you are carrying that day A Fuel Scavenger s Paradise Here s something a lot of people living in the cities and suburbs don t understand about rural areas there may be a lot more fuel available than meets the eye Areas of farming and agriculture may have large abandoned machinery like tractors and plows carrying dozens of gallons each of diesel fuel as well as stand alone diesel tanks and gasoline storage tanks that you may find either lifted up on a support stand or stored horizontally on the ground or even on a pull behind trailer Those that are on stands do not require an electric pump for operation electricity to the region may be down as gravity allows fuel to be pumped easily from the bottom side of the tank and through a hose and hand held nozzle Those tanks that are stored on level ground do require an electric pump and if there s no electricity simply unscrew the pump from the top of the tank look around and you ll probably find a pipe wrench somewhere nearby and now use a siphon pump or just a cut hose and siphon the fuel out of the tank with
