  • How to Protect Your Home or Cabin From Crooks in the Days Following Disaster
even consider doing this at his primary residence where he lives in Anytown USA Why have your supplies stolen by crooks roaming the neighborhoods when you can keep them safely hidden with just a little manual labor and creative thinking In a disaster especially in a world growing in violence like today there s an additional risk which is more people are likely more willing to hurt others in the name of survival A Dummy Survival Cache A Dummy Cache is a room in your house that contains some survival supplies and put together in a way that it looks like all of your supplies This is for a time such as being robbed by armed thugs who break into your home at gun point order you to give them all your food or else You plead with them please don t take our food we need our food to live but then give in to their order in a way that is all an act and you then lead them to your dummy cache which has some food A lot of it can be expired food in fact they may not be smart enough or care to check the expiration dates So at this point the thugs take your dummy cache believing they ve just cleaned you out and then they re on their way But aren t most people good people Surely most people wouldn t do something so criminal as to rob a family at gun point for food Well I ve got two words for you and why you might want to re think the good qualities of citizens in your community Those two words are The Tribulation Christians believe the world is entering the end times and they point to the nation of Israel and the Islamic nations sworn to destroy it as evidence that Bible prophecy is taking place Whether you re a Christian or not it s a valid argument The prophecies are there in the Bible and it s a miracle that the nation of Israel even exists today At the same time rampant evil and violence is becoming the norm in many nations and the Bible warns repeatedly of God bringing judgment to the world in the end times for this rampant evil and violence but first according to the last book chapter of the Bible the Book of Revelation God unleashes even more evil as a preliminary judgment going into the Tribulation time period followed by the rise of the Anti Christ and then finally destroys all evil at the end of the Tribulation What does that mean It means that we can expect a flood of evil to strike the world as the world enters the Tribulation And that means that you may find yourself surrounded by a number of people in your community suddenly demonized and suddenly willing to rape rob and murder in order to survive Back to that Cabin and Protecting Your Food Supplies Ok so

  • Strange Weather - Why So Much Strange Weather?
days in an area not known for seeing much in the line of such storms Bethel resident Michael Tarzia spoke to NBC30 com about how his son s roof was ripped to shreds by a torn off tree top and his observations seemed to sum up the devastation of the tornado quite well It took it the tree top threw it on the roof threw it on the house and threw another section over the house he said It destroyed the roof broke the ridge broke some rafters If only that were it with the strange weather that our world has been experiencing recently Unfortunately it s only the tip of the iceberg Kyrill hits home in Europe back in January Kyrill emanated in the North Sea during a time when Condoleezza Rice was visiting Berlin Let s put it this way she left With hurricane force winds that gusted up to 191 kilometers per hour the terrible storm tore through France the Netherlands Britain and Germany before deciding to happen upon the Czech Republic and more Kyrill left a trail of devastation killing several people destroying property and shutting down businesses and schools in its wake The trajectory severity and timing of the storm were all odd Further it left the kind of devastation that still has people in Europe worried April 2006 tornados in Iowa It s not that unusual for storms to rip through Iowa in April nor is it that rare for tornados to do so However it is rare for multiple funnel clouds and tornados to tear through that area of the country in a matter of three days In sum the state of Iowa still hasn t totally bounced back from the damage of that storm there are still trees down The Alabama tornado Just a couple of months ago a tornado ripped through the states of Alabama Georgia and Missouri killing 20 people and destroying tons of property including a local high school in Enterprise Alabama The devastation caused President Bush to declare Coffee County Alabama a disaster area in the wake of the storm Before we move on it might be important to realize that all of this has happened in a one year period most of it over the last several months And just to make a point here s a report from people in Saskatchewan Canada Simply put people from Saskatchewan report that on May 9 2007 it was 1C and snowing in La Ronge In the same province in Estevan weather reports indicate that it was 32C Are we talking about devastation here No However weather patterns like that just can t be good can they Unfortunately the aforementioned are only some examples Further they re unfortunately some of the milder ones Here are a couple of examples of the worst this world has seen over the past three years Tsunami kills approximately 300 000 in Indonesia Sri Lanka India and Thailand This was one of the most devastating

  • How to Survive a Catastrophic Flood
setting up your camp break a mirror downstairs and bring some pieces upstairs with you these might be used for signalling in the days to come Be sure to grab medicine and any hygiene items like toothbrushes toothpaste soap dish soap etc If you still have time grab some books and I hope you grab the Bible first Day 2 You look outside and floodwaters cover the area for as far as you can see Neighbors are climbing out onto roofs and yelling to one another above calming floodwaters You realize that there isn t an easy way for you to get up on your roof These neighbors must have used their second story deck or balconies to get up on the roof But you don t have a second story deck or balcony Cutting a Hole Through the Roof This is where the axe ladder and hammer are going to come in handy Consider choosing a room or even better make your way into the attic and to a far side of the house away from the base camp room you ve set up From the attic start banging away at the edges of the rafters and figure out where the plywood sheeting holding the roof shingles can be beaten back Take your axe to the roof if you have to Use one of your saws You are cutting an exit hole out to the roof where you can go and sit to scan the area shout to neighbors and wait for possible rescue Use one of your broken pieces of mirror to signal the sky or horizon should any helicopters appear or to signal any rescue boats or crafts out in the distance signal mirror requires sunlight by the way Day 3 No rescue has come yet The waters aren t rising but it s clear that there is some kind of current because your small boat that you have tied to your porch wants to float away You and your neighbor aren t talking much The shouting has gone on for too long You and your wife are both a little hoarse Your teen age son has been a help but he s also showing signs of intense anxiety This is not a normal flood Why isn t it dying down Are ocean levels rising We re fifty miles from the shore and yet all we see is waters off to the horizon What in the world is happening Dad if this flood reaches the shore are there sharks in the water swimming in from the ocean now So we have to deal with crocodiles snakes and sharks Day 4 Rather than use the upstairs toilet and risk some kind of back up no one in the family is really sure how toilets actually work you ve been using one of your buckets as a toilet and dumping the waste into the floodwaters This is what the neighbors must be doing you tell your family To collect water to use in your bucket as a makeshift toilet again and again you ve gone downstairs to the main level of your home but you can t actually get all the way down the stairs That s because the flood waters rise up about five steps up from the living room floor In fact most of your furniture is partially submerged underwater In your mind you take inventory of the supplies upstairs There s perhaps two days left of bottled water as you ve been rationing the bottled water that you already have You ve placed cooking pots on the roof that have been able to collect a little rain water but it hasn t been raining as much as it was in the days leading up to the massive flooding Rain Catch for Collecting Water You ve also created a rain catch out of the tarp and that has been the best way you ve found to collect the most amount of rain water where the tarp is tied to your chimney and then you ve nailed an opposite corner to a higher point on the roof Now you ve got a 100 square foot section of tarp effectively covering part of the roof and that when rained on is funneling rain down to a lower point where you have a cooking pot rigged to collect the water as it drips off But knowing you re running out of non perishable food and that you already cleaned out the fridge you decide to wade through the waters to the freezer portion which is above the fridge out of the reach of the flood waters Cooking Partially Frozen Food You open the freezer door and see that clearly the food has been thawing but the meat is still probably partially frozen in the center There s enough to feed the family for a couple more days Now however comes the challenge of cooking You re going to have to create a cooking fire but where can you safely create one The idea comes to you to go to the room of the house the back bedroom where you had cut that hole through the roof after climbing up into the attic and took out a section of the roof Taking the biggest pot on hand you place it in the room and then proceed to emptying your son s dresser and chopping it to pieces These are going to make your cooking fire The large pot is going to work as a burn barrel You open the bedroom window and shut the door effectively sealing the room off from the rest of the house The open window and the hole up above in the attic will allow the smoke to escape but you re still sure the room is going to be smoky Emergency Cooking Fire A small price to pay for a good cooking fire There s one thing you realize you don t have a grill to

controlled burns In other words those purposefully set with the idea of taking away underbrush Further physical fuel removal is also sometimes conducted which results in the chopping down or taking away of trees or other flammable forest substances The theory is that by thinning out forests and highly flammable dead debris wildfires can be better kept under control Further controlled burning may keep the life cycle going Unfortunately controlled burns have on rare occasions ballooned into large scale wildfires Further an argument can be made that forests are still burning just as much as they were before such measures were taken How Wildfires are Fought Different places Canada the U S have different ways of describing their forces But the available resources are roughly the same Wildfire Detection This has historically been done through watchtowers Of course aircraft also play a major role in the detection of wildfires today Interestingly more recent technological advances now allow us to utilize satellite technology to pinpoint wildfires Are we getting off the topic of surviving of a wildfire Not at all One proven method for wildfire survival is early detection The sooner we catch something burning or simply showing signs of smoke we can rush a response to put out any flames before they get out of control and take lives and property Fighting Wildfires from the Air Often wildfires are fought on numerous fronts One of these is the air Fixed wing aircraft or helicopters often serve to pummel fires below with fire retardant Helicopters have additional uses when fighting fires including transporting small units of firefighters and equipment to hard to reach places Sometimes these specially trained firefighters may rappel or fast rope down from helicopters Further firefighters sometimes parachute out of aircraft into the burning wilderness These people are called smokejumpers Fighting Wildfires from the Ground Of course firefighters use water to try and control wildfires in those hard to reach areas they tend toward portable pumps However there are far more ways man has learned to take on a burning forest than simply water Most of these lend toward breaking up the fuel source In other words creating space between the moving fire and the rest of the forest One approach to create space is through the use of chainsaws By cutting down trees sometimes fire is unable to spread from tree to tree Of course strong winds can sometimes put a damper on this philosophy Bigger machinery like bulldozers are also used when warranted to create a large ditch barrier in an attempt to stop the spread of fire When A Wildfire Rages Near Your Home So far the focus has been on preventing the fire from getting to the outskirts of your neighborhood But what if that doesn t work Well that could be bad news or terrible news Often the extent to which a wildfire will impact you depends on how updated your house is You see much of the property damage that has occurred

  • How to Survive Extreme Winter
cold Regardless this all leads to the following issue How to Survive the Cold First let s just talk about the cold itself You see there are several scenarios present For example if the problem was due to a volcanic eruption or perhaps a nuclear bomb being set off at a distance causing particles to be released into the stratosphere then you may still have your house and heat If you do then that s the place to stay as often as you can Simple common sense However a longstanding winter would impact the global and national economy in a very negative way Thus it wouldn t be a bad idea as a precaution to have two heat sources For example if you only have oil heat and issues cause oil to skyrocket in price it could be an issue for you It is in these cases that you might wish that you had that wood stove Which brings us to the next point Coal and wood stoves sometimes offer nice alternatives Especially a wood stove because if things really break down then you can find and chop your own in many locations Regardless try to have reserves on hand It s a smart preventative measure But let s face it turning on the heat is not what this article is about How to Deal with the Cold A nuclear bomb or asteroid touching down very close to your area could in essence knock out your heat source In reality it could knock down your house as well Further if you re stuck out in the wilderness a thermostat simply isn t available Under such circumstances you should know the facts Humans are not made to deal with frigid conditions We re basically tropical animals That said it takes adaptations on our part to survive These adaptations must serve to foster two things First we must stay warm by consuming appropriate food which the body burns for heat Second we must prevent the loss of the heat gained by our burning of appropriate food via shelter and clothing We all know we need food However this article is about the basics of dealing with the cold only Clothing in Frigid Conditions Some Basic Principles Remember that clothing in frigid conditions should serve to accomplish the following 1 Keep the body warm This is especially true for the outer extremities like fingers and toes 2 Allow perspiration to disperse 3 Allow free movement 4 Be comfortable Thus here are some guidelines that can help to accomplish this Guideline 1 Generally it is better to have several layers of lightweight clothes than one or two larger layers One reason for this is because several layers allow for good ventilation Thus the area between layers can serve to trap air which acts as good insulation Further this may serve to foster free movement and comfort more easily than huge and puffy clothes And one section of clothing may serve to shield the rest

  • Rising Sea Levels Due to Global Warming
the added heat could serve to dry up reservoirs However very little has been discussed concerning salinity in other words salt Simply put if the ocean rises it will increase the salinities of estuaries the lower course of a river where its currents are met by tides and aquifers underground beds or layers of earth gravel or porous stone that yield water When this happens the extra salt will impair water supplies and reservoirs as nearly all coastal water supplies are significantly impacted by the ocean to begin with Said another way New York Philadelphia and California get a lot of their water from upstream rivers If salt were to venture further upstream it would in essence destroy much of their water supplies Not to mention that salinity increases in such waters when the heat is high Landlocked bodies of water are threatened because of salinity as well Okay we ll get off the salt kick in a moment However this one was important enough to look at from another vantage In short when sea levels rise it will make some agriculture along the coast impossible Simply put the land will become too saline for cultivation The seaward boundary for farming or cultivation which is found where the saltwater from the ground and surface waters penetrates inland to the point that cultivation becomes impossible would obviously penetrate farther inland under such a scenario Thus farming would also be impacted Waves would increase in size If you re a surfer this one sounds cool However surfers like beaches and unfortunately the sheer power of these larger waves would serve to erode the coastline even further than the already rising sea levels would Of all countries the United States will find itself most impacted by the rising sea levels According to the Environmental Protection Agency the United States will be the most negatively impacted of all countries on Earth by the rising sea levels compelled through global warming Specifically the U S s Atlantic Coast will suffer the greatest degree of ecosystem challenges through the possible death of numerous species and plant life along its fragile coastal plain How to survive rising sea levels due to global warming First thing we must all do is understand that some of these changes will take place no matter what we do whether emissions are lessened or not Thus we must all understand that adaptation is a must Once that is understood then change can take place So here are three ideas on how to combat these sea level issues through adaptation 1 Make a wall Coastal cities and areas will need protection One obvious way to attempt this is through walling them off with bulkheads dikes seawalls and pumping systems Dikes and pumping systems are already being used in areas such as New Orleans that are well below sea level In fact all of these are being used effectively in other parts of the country Though these manmade structures will help save property and

that link the proxy records to observational data and as such Osborn and Briffa did not properly quantify the statistical uncertainties in their analyses Yeah we don t know what that means either But keep reading to find out After repeating the analyses appropriately he concluded that as a result the highly significant occurrences of positive anomalies during the 20th century disappear Further he notes that the 95th percentile is exceeded mostly in the early 20th century but also about the year 1000 Said another way this planet has been real hot before and the 20th century isn t really any different Thus we may not be in as much trouble as was originally thought Still it is awfully hot isn t it That simply can t be denied So if it isn t greenhouse gasses that are causing swarms of bugs to interrupt America s favorite pastime what is causing the heat No one knows for sure But here s a theory that s gaining some steam The Sun is Heating Up In September of 2005 NASA reported that Mars Orbiters were giving them some strange information Namely these orbiters were telling them that deposits of frozen carbon dioxide near the Mars South Pole had shrunk for three straight years indicating an interesting climate change Now even the staunchest proponents of the greenhouse gasses global warming scenarios must admit this Earth emissions likely have nothing to do with that In fact the Martian South polar ice cap has been shrinking since 1999 at a prodigious rate according to Michael Malin Principal Investigator for the Mars Orbiter Camera The images documenting changes from 1999 to 2005 suggest the Martian climate is presently warmer and perhaps getting warmer still than it was several decades or even centuries ago So is that it Is global warming simply due to some kind of solar cycle where the sun gets warmer Depends on whom you talk to Back in 2005 Sallie Baliunas Ph D Astrophysicist and Chair of the Science Advisory Board at George C Marshall Institute in Washington D C did not feel that the sun was the be all end all The earth s surface temperature seems to have risen a little more dramatically than the sun has in recent decades she said So in terms of a straightforward link between the two an association between the Sun and Earth it looks like the Sun has not been the cause of most of the late 20th Century warming However it could have made a contribution Now here s the other side of the story According to WorldNetDaily Danish researchers Henrik Svensmark and Eigil Friis Christensen contend that the sun still appears to be the main agent in global climate change This of course contradicts the findings of a well publicized and recent UK study indicating that greenhouse gasses are the culprit These researchers however believe that the UK study wrongly relied on surface air temperature to make its claims which is something

  • The 2011 Mississippi River Flood
Japan earthquake that lead to the tsunami and lead then the meltdown of nuclear power plants killing thousands of Japanese and sending hundreds of thousands on an evacuation out of the area Is a Catastrophic Flood Coming to States Along the Mississippi River We have published another article recently on flood survival and there s a great chance that some of the things talked about in this article could be assets for survival ASSOCIATE PRESS 5 8 11 More evacuations in Memphis city waits on river For example if you live in a flood zone it is a smart idea to have a boat on hand tied to your property as well as emergency supplies stored in an upper area of your home People impacted by the 2011 Mississippi River flood may look back with regret that they did not heed early news reports about a coming flood and failed to stock up on emergency supplies specifically a boat What if the flood isn t that bad Well there s a good chance that can happen also My point with this article is that we had better start being prepared for natural disasters in growing magnitude if in fact we re in the end times as prophesied in the Bible Being prepared for disaster before hand may be a wise move for most of the population Plenty of rope life vests and water proof storage containers could be essential to have on hand as emergency supplies for surviving a flood Even better though would be to consider an early evacuation This would involve taking an assessment of the proximity of your town to the Mississippi River and then the location of your home in relation to the elevation of roads and highways that provide access out of town If you live in a city with a lot of people for example New Orleans which could easily be impacted by flooding from the Mississippi River should the levees fail then even if you were confident that you could take roads and highways ouf of the city you might run into a never ending crawl of cars as hundreds of thousands of people decide to evacuate on short notice Flooding and Evacuation of Towns Along the Mississippi In that case many people fearing the rising flood waters of the Mississippi River might even abandon their cars and start running walking alongside the highway With hundreds and even thousands of cars suddenly abandoned this exodus of traffic isn t going anywhere So a person whose strategy is to survive a massive flooding of the Mississippi River in this fashion is going to want to have backpacks for each member of their family pre packed with emergency food and water as well as shelter for example just a simple tarp and the right shoes for walking long distances Considering the panic that took place in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina it might be smart for people to also carry self defense items but to
