popular column in the magazine So while I m mostly over my anger it s been a while now since I left I admit to a little bit of schadenfreude Did the print magazine fail due to mismanagement after Michael Miller left or is print just on the way out or both Hard to say In any case I am sad that my relationship with PC Magazine ended on a sour note because I spent so many happy years there The good old days in the 1990s were a great ride I ll try to focus on that Category Life Miscellaneous Observations Comment RSS Trackback 3 Comments Winn L Rosch says November 19 2008 at 3 18 pm When the Ziff family sold PC Magazine and the rest of the Ziff publications shows etc its fate was set The new owners took on too much debt They quickly sold it to people who took on even more debt If you looked at the numbers there was no way it could dig its way out of its debt hole and then the dot com bubble burst I think it s amazing they were able to continue as long as they did The bean counter did a good job of keeping PC Magazine in print any way they could But time ran out In today s economy running a magazine is difficult ask the man who owns one like me With advertising down 30 or more marginal publications will be disappearing very quickly A couple weeks ago Mary Englebreit s Home Companion ceased publication More are likely to follow At least the current Ziff organization is keeping PC alive online The readers of other publications are not so lucky I started with PC Magazine with Volume One in 1981 so I understand your feelings of loss As with you I mourn the loss but I too remember many years of great fun and a great education in technology and publishing Sheryl says November 19 2008 at 3 37 pm When I first started at PC Magazine Bill Ziff was still there I met him at the Christmas party my first year very exciting for me Bill Ziff was a special guy He had a do what you love and the money will follow philosophy that worked It s true that the print environment today is dreadful and bad financial decisions were made the debt burden but bad editorial decisions were made in later days as well The magazine reached a point where it couldn t figure out who what it was anymore or who it was talking to The bean counters started throwing out the baby with the bath water to save money and that was truly the kiss of death It s hard enough for any magazine to survive in this environment But when excellence goes everything goes I don t think there s any doubt that the quality of the magazine today is not what it was in its heyday

  • Sheryl's Blog » Blog Archive The Immigration Issue No One Talks About
that drives illegal immigration in the first place Somewhere along the line America changed We went from being a haven for the downtrodden and persecuted to a clique that only the privileged and elite can join Is this the kind of country we want Category Life Miscellaneous Observations Comment RSS Trackback 3 Comments Neil C says December 23 2010 at 3 26 pm Actually this is a misnomer I do a lot of work with USCIS Immigration so I have a bit of insight into this We allow 1 1MM legal permanent immigrants into the US each year That is 22MM over the last 20 years 33 cities the size of Washington DC All through legal channels This is actually a very big number Of the 1 1MM more than 50 have less than a college education Actually only about 20 25 of this total get here through employment Another 10 get here through refugee or asylee status 50 000 get here through a lottery each year The remainder the lions share get here through family relationships Less than 50 of legal immigrants have a college degree So we are allowing 600 000 less educated people to enter the US each year What is really crazy is that a large portion of the less educated legal immigrants are the relatives of the illegals who came here in the 1980 s and got amnesty under the late 1980 s amnesty If we reduced the concept of family relationships to spouses and minor children we would free up enough slots to create a 300 400K person lottery instead of the 50K lottery we have now The question you did not ask is What is the impact on less educated citizens of an unlimited flow of competitive labor In many urban areas illegal Hispanic labor has crowded out citizen Black labor Here in DC we have a very high Black unemployment rate but a variety of trades and businesses have a almost holistically Spanish speaking labor force It is clear that both wages and employment levels have been depressed for less educated Americans So while I have personally seen that most of the people who get here illegally are very hard working and honest It still begs the question of their impact of our most disadvantaged The fact you do not know how many legal immigrants get here annually and how they get here is a deliberate failure on the part of the media I know it is deliberate because I have talked to most of the Washington Post writers about this Nonetheless they refuse to print any actual data about immigration preferring anecdotal stories about immigrant woes Sheryl Canter says December 23 2010 at 11 31 pm Hi Neil Thanks very much for your comment interesting info I was especially interested in this last thing you wrote The fact you do not know how many legal immigrants get here annually and how they get here is a deliberate failure on the part

it and what their main concerns were in the election Now here was the surprising part for me I thought I didn t know enough to respond to what people said I was afraid I couldn t rattle off enough statistics to answer people s questions But it turned out that the combination of my years as a news junkie and passionate personal feelings about the issues were all that was needed I didn t know every answer but I knew enough and I had some great conversations with people CONVERSATIONS WITH SWING VOTERS I talked to an 80 year old woman very well informed and clearly agreeing with Obama on every major issue who couldn t quite get herself to support him She said at one point Maybe I m racist I said Young people today don t notice the difference between black and white but older people grew up with a different experience Yes she said I don t know anyone in the South who could vote for him And then I recognized that soft tone in her accent as from the South Teddy said You sound like an Obama supporter and she smiled and said Maybe I am At another house an older man answered the door and said his first concern was health care but he didn t believe that anyone could make universal health care happen after all it didn t happen back in the 1990s What s different now he asked I actually knew the answer to that one because health care is a major concern of mine and I d researched it I told him that in the 1990s powerful lobbyists from the American Medical Association killed the health care legislation but now they were no longer opposing it With a Democratic Congress as we d surely have health legislation would pass if Obama were president but we d be in a lot of trouble if McCain got in office with his very bad health plan I think I was able to convince him because I myself am convinced One thing in his tone though is something I heard over and over again as I knocked on doors and it made me really sad There is a kind of learned helplessness and cynicism about politics among Americans Many of the undecided voters I spoke to said they absolutely refused to vote because our entire political system was a sham that no one could do anything and all the politicians were the same That is what the last 8 years has done to the American public Many Americans are so discouraged that they can no longer recognize when there s an action available to them that really can make a difference The other striking impression I had from canvassing was how much people wanted to talk about this election and the state of the country and have their concerns heard At one house I visited the man who answered the door said yes he

pm I m talking about multitasking on a tablet I guess you have to have one to know what I mean Or maybe that is lazy of me I should have done a better job of explaining Either way there is an issue with having multiple apps visible simultaneously on a tablet Android generic can do it through popups but the app has to be specifically engineered to be a popup Samsung has tweaked one of their Android tablets so that a handful of specially engineered Samsung apps can appear on the screen at the same time as other apps but again it s only these specifically engineered apps not just any app Windows 8 can simultaneously display ANY two apps written to their tablet interface i e any modern app There doesn t have to be anything special about it Yes it can only do two at a time but how many apps do you think you can look at on a 10 screen Also with the workshop app you can have more than two I know I m not explaining what that is but I didn t get a lot of sleep last night and I m too tired to do it right now My bigger criticism of the Windows 8 capability is that the apps are always taking up 1 3 and 2 3 of the screen I d like to be able to resize them to take up any proportion 1 2 and 1 2 or whatever Greg Lee says May 7 2013 at 11 12 pm I guess you re talking about how many active windows the window system can display simultaneously rather than multitasking Actually I have 3 tablets but none with Windows 8 Sheryl Canter says May 8 2013 at 1 50 pm Yes that s what I meant how many programs can be displayed and used simultaneously Multitasking was the wrong term since all of them have tasks running in the background I ll fix it Thanks for pointing out the error Dean Silver says May 9 2013 at 12 14 am I m glad to see you changed the title again When you changed it to a lot to love I thought Microsoft had gotten to you and paid you off Sheryl Canter says May 9 2013 at 10 04 am Ha The journalist in me said who cares about YOUR TAKE summarize your take So I changed it But I wasn t comfortable with it so I changed it back Sal says May 29 2013 at 8 29 pm Hi Sheryl How does the Surface Pro compare to your Asus Transformer Am thinking of getting a hybrid tablet pc can t decide between the 2 Am used to the old keyboard also pref at least one USB 3 0 port Surface Pro hasn t arrived in Australia yet and the extra charges they chuck on for us Aussies is criminal I appreciate your kindle hints too Have just got mine

buttons along the bottom of the WR7 that correspond to the colored buttons on the cable remote A yellow B blue C red D green The RF20 does not have separate colored buttons but A B C D etc are available from the LCD screen These buttons have special meanings in operating the cable box different meanings in different contexts It s extremely nice that the WR7 has these buttons built in I ve seen reviews of other universal remotes complaining that there s no way to duplicate them But if you program macros into them in Cable mode as the WR7 manual suggests you lose their native function and you will no longer be able to fully control your cable box Do not override these buttons in cable mode I don t feel a need to set up favorite channels on the remote I use the cable box to store my Favorites which I can then access through the remote s Fav button But if you really want to use the colored buttons to program favorite channels do it in AUX mode not Cable mode URC remotes are exceptionally well designed and not enough people seem to know about them Everyone talks about the Logitech Harmony remotes but I really think these are better and they re a lot cheaper Tags audio and 2011 at 9 52 pm I recently got the WR7 Thanks for the tip for not programming the 4 Fav in Cable mode Is it possible to program a key for PIP I tried but so far am unsuccessful Doug says October 14 2011 at 8 40 am Sheryl I just got the Universal WR7 remote To the good I ve been able to transfer all the functions I want for my cable box Blu Ray DVD Pioneer surround sound and Insignia 42 inch TV Maybe you could help me with two dead ends I ve run into No matter what I ve tried I can t get the input button of the Insignia TV to transfer to the corresponding WE7 input button in the TV mode I ve been using the learning method which worked fine on every other transfers in various modes I ve even tried using another receptor button on the WR7 like the number one or one of the colored favorite buttons which worked great to transfer an open tray button on my DVD all to no avail Also what button on the WR7 could you use to transfer the Tivo button on my TV remote Any suggestions would be much appreciated Doug David Dornbusch says October 14 2013 at 5 32 pm I assumed that one could have the WR7 learn input as part of creating a macro wrong only commands already in the WR7 can be used in a Macro Still the macro capability is great e g since Dish requires 9 button pushes to turn closed captioning ON or OFF the ability to put this in a macro is great just be aware that as you are creating the macro you will not be able to see on screen what your steps are doing since the WR7 button pushes you do will only be recorded in the macro and will not be put out at the same time for your Dish receiver to see So the procedure is 1 Press a component button 2 Press at same time the MUTE and macro buttons for 2 3 seconds 3 Press buttons on WR7 to be stored in the macro 4 Press CH up to save macro Andrew says January 5 2014 at 11 03 pm Just saw this in an Amazon review in regards to one of the WR7 negatives By One Shot Scot Berkeley CA The Universal WR7 is an upgrade from my Universal R7 I was very happy with the R7 but it had no three digit code for my OPPO DVD player and the R7 was unable to learn the commands from the remote to my Roku digital video player The WR7 has the OPPO DVD player code and it was also able to learn the Roku commands Increased functionality and ease of programming can be realized with both the R7 the WR7 remotes by using an undocumented programming method There is no problem entering TV codes into the TV button DVD codes into the DVD button etc However it you have more than one DVD player VCR or other component programming the Universal remote control can be challenging The WR7 may refuse to learn remote control functions from device categories that do not match the category of the function key being programmed The following example shows how to enter a DVD code into a non DVD button but the same basic procedure can be used for any other component code that does not match the category of the button to which it is being assigned This procedure can also be incorporated into other programming methods described in the owner s manual The key to success is step 2 1 Press the non DVD component button TV VCR SAT CABLE AUX AUD or CD that you want to program with a DVD code and the SEL button at the same time and hold both buttons down until the component button LED light turns on Release the buttons 2 Press the DVD component button This undocumented step tells the R7 and WR7 remotes that the next three digits will be a DVD code If you were entering a VCR code into a non VCR component button you would press the VCR button before entering the code The same method would apply when programming a TV SAT CABLE or CD code into non matching component buttons This is a variation of punch

  • Sheryl's Blog » Blog Archive Control a Bose Wave Radio with a Universal Remote
hoping somebody will know We just purchased the wave radio and have it connected to our lifestyle 48 surround which is in another room so that we can play our stored music as well as internet radio etc The 2 units are connected with boselink The bummer part is that the remote that comes with the wave will not activate the boselink it has to be the lifestyle remote BUT you have to alter the channel switches inside of the remote which is a pane in the butt Optimum situation would be to have a second lifestyle remote These are not cheap obviously Ebay is an option for a used one Do you think the universal remote you mentioned will activate the lifestyle 48 Does anyone else have options Thanks to all in advance John Matson says October 30 2011 at 8 05 pm The code 224 worked for me on a Time Warner UR5U 8780L remote and Bose Wave Radio CD Robert says December 4 2012 at 10 50 am Have you or one of your bloggers had any success with a Roku box and the Universal Remote Control URC WR7 Rob Malcolm says December 5 2012 at 7 06 pm FYI Universal is nice but for the Roku App from Roku Inc is the best Roku remote with the ultimate functionality for the Roku If you have a smart phone just use it Oh yeah the reason I m here I have the Bose AWRCC2 Wave radio system Older and the Direct TV remote was able to control some of the main functions on my Bose They didn t have my model listed so I had to go through 1 by 1 until I found one that worked steve strickland says February 2 2013 at 3 27 am I have att u verse service and unable to program the remote to my Bose system all the codes dont seem to work and the controller doesnt have the learning key what can I do Thanks Sheryl Canter says February 2 2013 at 12 45 pm Steve the subject of this blog post is how to use a learning Radio connected to my 46 inch Samsung Smart TV Sound is 200 better How do I program the Samsung Universal remote so it will adjust the volume on the Bose or can I program the Direct Tv remote to adjust the volume on the Bose One good thing TV and Bose cut off with the Direct TV Remote Thanks for any solution Tobias says March 7 2013 at 7 25 pm we just bought a Vizio TV the TV remote channel volume controls TURN ON our Bose CD Changer and eject CD s as well How can we solve this Universal remote change the rf frequency on one or the other I called Vizio they say you can t change the frequency code on their tv remote any chance of changing it on the Bose 6 CD changer thank you for any suggestions Sheryl Canter says March 10 2013 at 2 53 pm Pat as it says in my blog post you need a learning remote to control a Bose radio because it doesn t use codes The universal remote I use is linked in the post It has a particularly nice volume control feature also explained in the post Tobias I ve never heard of two devices using the same frequency as you describe and I suspect it s not solvable You can t change the frequencies used by a device that s built in I d call Bose They have outstanding technical support and if anyone can find a way around the problem they can Sheryl Canter says March 10 2013 at 3 52 pm I ve now tried all the different codes that various commenters have recommended to control the Bose Wave Radio None of them work on my radio as I suspected they would not since Bose technical support told me there is no code that works I even entered the exact modem number on the bottom of my radio AWRCC1 on this page http www urcsupport com html php page id 289 got back the code 1629 and tried that It did not work It says though that this is the most popular code for my brand not that it s the code for my model the Bose Wave Radio So I stand by what I wrote in my original post You need a learning remote to control the Bose Wave Radio with a universal remote I suspect that the people who said they were able to use codes to control their Bose radios don t have this particular model A universal remote with learning capability can control all your equipment and replace all your other remotes for most things So the answer to how do I get the remote that came with my system to do this is you don t Go buy the remote I linked to in the original blog post and use that instead of the remotes that came with your equipment No remote can solve frequency conflicts As far as I know the frequency that a piece of equipment uses is hardwared and cannot be changed Chris says May 17 2013 at 9 50 pm For the Wave Music System radio w CD predecessor to the Wave Radio III the Time Warner Cable UR5U 8700 and UR5U 8780L work partially power volume seek up seek down using code 827 If you need to switch between AM and FM you can do that by temporarily programming in code 532 and pressing the 2 and D buttons There seem to be other functions available using these two codes that may require the
