terms of sheer technique it s probably as good or better than anything else being published at the moment But I didn t really like it The concept of an older murderous Batman is possibly too suited to this team s talents to the extent that it doesn t really stretch them at all instead feeling like a parody mash up of what Batman would be like in the world of 100 Bullets While the execution is beautiful the story itself lacks energy and there s a real feeling that yes this is exactly the comic you d expect from this concept and these creators no more and no less My apathy may also be due to my age and the amount of times I ve been around the storytelling blocks of superhero comics I find it very hard to get excited by this kind of everything has changed everything you know is wrong alternative timeline story That is as much a problem with me as with comics there are only so many permutations these characters can go through and if you stick around long enough everything will come back around again sooner or later The comics readership should ideally cycle with new readers being surprised by the same old tricks but I m still here Readers with less comics under their belt may still find themselves surprised or shocked by a world where various familiar characters are dead and others have different allegiances To me it all feels very familiar a feeling not helped by the fact that the normal DCU has been getting more brutal for a while now If you want to read a comic where Bruce Wayne s dad is a kill happy bastard of a Batman this is as good an execution of that concept as you re ever likely to see Personally I d rather be reading either a comic with the normal Batman being heroic or a properly harsh noir story from Azzarello and Risso rather than this unholy fusion Line Break By Mark Clapham Mark Clapham is a Devon based writer and editor You can find out more about him at the egotistically named markclapham com Share Batman Knight of Vengeance 1 Tags Batman Brian Azzarello Comics DC Eduardo Risso Flashpoint Comments are closed RECENT POPULAR TAGS Saga Django Unchained Disney and Lucasfilm Dracula vs Robin Hood vs Jekyll and Hyde 1 2 Star Trek Titan Fallen Gods Ted The Dark Knight Rises UK comics round up Nelson The Scarifyers Quick Doctor Who poll Doctor Who The post Big Bang survival kit Print s Not Dead World of Fancraft The Shiny Shelf Alternative Xmas Gift Guide Fringe 2 16 Peter Ashes to Ashes Advent Calendar Alan Moore Angel Batman BBC BBC One BBC Three BBC Two BFI Billie Piper Books Brian Michael Bendis Buffy Channel 4 Chris Carter Christopher Eccleston Comedy Comics David Tennant DC Doctor Who Documentary DVD Enterprise Fifth Geoff Johns George Lucas Grant Morrison Horror ITV JJ Abrams Joss

Culbard bring that out with some vivid characters and great pacing Culbard s art is always super clear and expressive and as with Mountains he demonstrates that horror can work in comics with sharp cartoony art as well if not better than with lashing of detailed gore and murky paint effects One of the strengths of the anthology is the variety of art styles used Shane Ivan Oakley who illustrates The Haunter in the Dark has a pared down style even compared to the clean lines of Culbard and D Israeli and his angular blocks of light and shade work very well with a story where the lead character s senses become increasingly warped and disturbed At the opposite end of the spectrum is Leigh Gallagher who illustrates John Reppion and Leah Moore s adaptation of The Shadows of Innsmouth Gallagher artist on the excellent restoration era zombie epic Defoe in 2000AD is a more conventional horror artist with a knack for monstrous creatures and horrible details and he goes to town on Shadows the Innsmouth stare will linger in your mind for a while after reading There s a lot of good stuff in this excellent anthology which can double as a treat for Lovecraft fans who get to see their favourites superbly adapted and a primer for newcomers who can get a feel for HP s morbid work with this accessible and highly readable volume Lockwood and his collaborators do the original stories justice and this is both a smart adaptation and an effective collection of chilling tales I eagerly await Volume 2 And on that note I m just off to fake up an eldritch statue with the words DO M R JAMES NEXT in ancient Babylonian inscribed on the base and drop it round at SelfMadeHero s offices You can buy the Lovecraft Anthology from Amazon Line Break By Mark Clapham Mark Clapham is a Devon based writer and editor You can find out more about him at the egotistically named markclapham com Share The Lovecraft Anthology Volume 1 Tags Comics D Israeli Dan Lockwood Horror HP Lovecraft Ian Edginton INJ Culbard John Reppion Leah Moore Leigh Gallagher Lovecraft Anthology Rob Davis SelfMadeHero Shane Ivan Oakley Comments are closed RECENT POPULAR TAGS Saga Django Unchained Disney and Lucasfilm Dracula vs Robin Hood vs Jekyll and Hyde 1 2 Star Trek Titan Fallen Gods Ted The Dark Knight Rises UK comics round up Nelson The Scarifyers Quick Doctor Who poll Doctor Who The post Big Bang survival kit Print s Not Dead World of Fancraft The Shiny Shelf Alternative Xmas Gift Guide Fringe 2 16 Peter Ashes to Ashes Advent Calendar Alan Moore Angel Batman BBC BBC One BBC Three BBC Two BFI Billie Piper Books Brian Michael Bendis Buffy Channel 4 Chris Carter Christopher Eccleston Comedy Comics David Tennant DC Doctor Who Documentary DVD Enterprise Fifth Geoff Johns George Lucas Grant Morrison Horror ITV JJ Abrams Joss Whedon London Film Festival Marvel Movies Russell T Davies
