sympathies backwards and forwards in the way that Rodriguez occasionally fails to do Example Had Quentin himself shot this Richie s murder of the hostage would have been a timely reminder that the boy is sick and dangerous and we d never have seen him in the same way following the scene Here inadequacies in editing not I repeat not in performance cause him to slip back into being a comedy character more or less straight afterwards Which is tasteless and tactless and deeply unpleasant The cast are all first rate Clooney subverts and plays with his Nice Guy image adding a nasty edge to his usual screen persona in a way that s actually rather unsettling OK it s not Cary Grant in Suspicion but its close Tarantino is perhaps too visibly enjoying himself to be entirely effective but he has more than his share of great moments Juliette Lewis and Harvey Keitel seem to be under the impression that they re in a very serious movie indeed and this incongruity all just adds to the picture s appeal Mexican Don Cheech Marin a hero to anyone whose film radar extends beyond Hollywood turns up in no less than three different roles and very good he is in all three too In the end its these casting triumphs and Tarantino s trademark flair for funny intense characterful dialogue that lifts From Dusk Till Dawn above its limitations to become a tremendous viewing experience Extras on this DVD release include the usual bells whistles trailers and so forth plus the feature length Full Tilt Boogie an absolutely first rate documentary on indie cinema directed by the girl who made the tea on Pulp Fiction It features Clooney mocking himself endlessly Tarantino versus the Teamsters and some really funny footage of the production team at a SF Horror Convention Good stuff Line Break By Jim Smith Share From Dusk Till Dawn Trilogy Part 1 Tags DVD George Clooney Horror Quentin Tarantino Robert Rodriguez Comments are closed RECENT POPULAR TAGS Saga Django Unchained Disney and Lucasfilm Dracula vs Robin Hood vs Jekyll and Hyde 1 2 Star Trek Titan Fallen Gods Ted The Dark Knight Rises UK comics round up Nelson The Scarifyers Quick Doctor Who poll Doctor Who The post Big Bang survival kit Print s Not Dead World of Fancraft The Shiny Shelf Alternative Xmas Gift Guide Fringe 2 16 Peter Ashes to Ashes Advent Calendar Alan Moore Angel Batman BBC BBC One BBC Three BBC Two BFI Billie Piper Books Brian Michael Bendis Buffy Channel 4 Chris Carter Christopher Eccleston Comedy Comics David Tennant DC Doctor Who Documentary DVD Enterprise Fifth Geoff Johns George Lucas Grant Morrison Horror ITV JJ Abrams Joss Whedon London Film Festival Marvel Movies Russell T Davies Spider Man Star Trek Star Wars Superman The X Files TV Vampires X Men Zombies Comics Read Younger Looking Flesh our first webcomic Tags Advent Calendar Alan Moore Angel Batman BBC BBC One BBC Three BBC Two BFI

taken the subtextual concerns of Dracula that have informed many an adaptation Victorian fears of syphilis a fascination with sex and death the search for meaning in an increasingly rational world and has brought them to the fore of both the plot and dialogue Thus Dracula is brought to these shores as a means to cure an aristocrat of inherited syphilis Lucy Westenra gets a little speech about wanting to see a shipwreck because dead sailors excite her and when Van Helsing turns up he lectures the characters on how they shouldn t try to cure illness through fringe medicines or foreign visitors but stick with faith in Jesus instead What By foregrounding what was once subtext Harcourt leaves a story with lots of bold statements but no depth to it an adolescent poem to sex and death that fails to tie together satisfactorily Which is a shame as there s some good casting and production values here Marc Warren offers another eccentric turn as Dracula but can do little to save the dialogue he s given while Sophia Myles and Rafe Spall are under utilised as Lucy and Jonathan respectively Only Tom Burke really gets chance to impress in the role of Dr Seward now a Harley Street doctor rather than practising at an asylum his second notable appearance on TV this Christmas after a supporting role in No 13 over on BBC4 Director Brian Eagles shoots the whole thing nicely and as mentioned earlier the BBC doesn t often go wrong producing period dramas so the sets and costumes are just right Nice idea decent production shame about the script dragging the whole thing down Line Break By Mark Clapham Mark Clapham is a Devon based writer and editor You can find out more about him at the egotistically named markclapham com Share Dracula Tags BBC BBC One David Suchet Dracula Marc Warren Sophia Myles TV Comments are closed RECENT POPULAR TAGS Saga Django Unchained Disney and Lucasfilm Dracula vs Robin Hood vs Jekyll and Hyde 1 2 Star Trek Titan Fallen Gods Ted The Dark Knight Rises UK comics round up Nelson The Scarifyers Quick Doctor Who poll Doctor Who The post Big Bang survival kit Print s Not Dead World of Fancraft The Shiny Shelf Alternative Xmas Gift Guide Fringe 2 16 Peter Ashes to Ashes Advent Calendar Alan Moore Angel Batman BBC BBC One BBC Three BBC Two BFI Billie Piper Books Brian Michael Bendis Buffy Channel 4 Chris Carter Christopher Eccleston Comedy Comics David Tennant DC Doctor Who Documentary DVD Enterprise Fifth Geoff Johns George Lucas Grant Morrison Horror ITV JJ Abrams Joss Whedon London Film Festival Marvel Movies Russell T Davies Spider Man Star Trek Star Wars Superman The X Files TV Vampires X Men Zombies Comics Read Younger Looking Flesh our first webcomic Tags Advent Calendar Alan Moore Angel Batman BBC BBC One BBC Three BBC Two BFI Billie Piper Books Brian Michael Bendis Buffy Channel 4 Chris Carter Christopher Eccleston Comedy
