    Influenced by the events of 1989 his early paintings mirror the movement s disenchantment with both political and artistic utopias less a statement about historic events than expressions of skepticism and satire Demonstrating a wide array of influences from Chinese calligraphy to Expressionism Liu Wei s work has become less political over time dealing instead with universal themes of humanity Like his Western forebears Francis Bacon and Lucien Freud he is a master of rendering human flesh and combining figuration with subliminal text and abstraction Liu Wei s deft grasp of technique and acute awareness of color and composition is evident in his lush landscapes in which flora and fauna often escape the confines of the canvas and spill out onto the hand carved frames Liu Wei currently lives in Beijing His work has been exhibited in prestigious organizations worldwide including the Museum of Contemporary Art Sydney Australia the Kunsthal Rotterdam the Netherlands Museum of Modern Art Oxford UK the Vancouver Art Gallery Canada the Hong Kong Arts Centre Hong Kong China the Singapore Art Museum Singapore Asia Society New York MoMA P S 1 New York the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art California the Shanghai Gallery of Art

    a forthcoming exhibition or project many are site specific The resultant exhibition includes the manifestation of some of the ideas as well as the framed proposals both realized and unrealized The first object produced in any series is a book collating the entire set of proposals He draws inspiration not just from Conceptual artists such as On Kawara Fischli and Weiss and Keith Arnatt but also from artists such as Joseph Cornell and the Reverend Howard Finster as well as inveterate tinkerers like his own grandfathers Liversidge is driven by the generative notion of creativity and the idea that art is most successful when it exists slightly outside of formalist notions of fine art To this end the physical objects Liversidge produces often include banal everyday materials that are repurposed or co opted for his use He believes that his work is universally accessible and in fact requires the presence of the viewer and their unique interpretation of the proposals to complete the aesthetic experience The artist s active engagement with each space and community for which he creates proposals is at the center of his varied and dynamic practice Liversidge has worked with a diverse range of institutions including

    s sole means of expression happened gradually during the mid seventies He took his first photographs of his close friend the singer artist poet Patti Smith using a Polaroid camera and later became known for his portraits of composers architects socialites stars of pornographic films members of the S M underground and an array of other unique people many of whom were personal friends Mapplethorpe had his first solo exhibition in New York in 1976 During the early 1980s his photographs shifted to emphasize classical formal beauty concentrating on statuesque male and female nudes delicate flowers still life and formal portraits In 1988 four major exhibitions of his work were organized by the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York The Institute of Contemporary Art at University of Pennsylvania Philadelphia and the National Portrait Gallery in London These exhibitions and the controversial works they presented sparked a larger international ongoing debate about public funding for the arts censorship and other First Amendment concerns as well as the definition of that which is considered art Mapplethorpe died from AIDS on March 9 1989 in Boston at age 42 Since that time his work has been
