    mute witnesses to the decline of East Berlin s industrial sector and the disappearance of its political system The curtains removed from their original setting were archived steam ironed and photographed in a studio By hanging them in front of windows during daylight Thiel recreated the atmosphere of the original sites The artist painstakingly arranged the fabric into rigid folds working against the limitations of the inherent pliable nature of the material The monumental photographs enlarged to three times life size take on an abstract character as a result of the carefully manipulated fabric detaching them further from the original subject matter Highly elaborate and textured this new series of work brilliantly explores the intimate and evolving relationship between geometric abstraction and photography whilst also being encoded with a strong socio political context In this new body of work Thiel confidently positions photography and painting on common ground Thiel describes the spaces that interest him as the kind of beauty that a normal eye is often too blind to see and is usually abandoned from our perception Due to the range of fabrics employed Thiel s new series is comprised of widely varied imagery This noteworthy new body of work extends Thiel s almost twenty year preoccupation with post wall Berlin its social political and cultural transformation Thiel has exhibited extensively in museums and galleries worldwide his works are included in the collections of many major international museums Thiel s works have been exhibited at the Portland Art Museum the Austin Museum of Art the Phoenix Art Museum the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto Canada the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid Spain the Moderna Museet in Stockholm Sweden the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo Japan the Fotomuseum Winterthur

    of the artist in his studio making the paintings The photographs are reminiscent of the well known series of photographs by Hans Namuth and Rudy Burckhardt that helped demystify Pollock s famous drip painting technique revealing a deliberate process rather than a random splashing of paint The paintings and photographs extend Turk s ongoing investigation into ideas of authorship and authenticity which have preoccupied him throughout his career The Mechanical Turk a film in which the artist presents himself as a life size chess playing automaton will be projected in Gallery 1 Turk examines the fascinating historical story of The Turk a life sized mechanized figure dressed in Turkish robes which would trick viewers into believing it was a world class chess player This famous 18th century automaton astounded audiences across Europe and America and is said to have outwitted Napoleon The setting and dress of the film exactly replicates 18th century etchings made of The Turk The film which is 14 minutes long shows the artist dressed in costume which was described as that of an Oriental sorcerer executing the knight s tour a series of complicated chess moves whereby the knight is placed on an empty board visiting each square only one time Turk consistently explores ways in which works of art are conferred with iconic status and value He is interested in the way fame and celebrity affect the understanding of art and the position of artists In the past he has utilized the personas and work of Joseph Beuys Elvis Presley and Andy Warhol to name a few Turk borrows from the history of art and at the same time references contemporary popular culture exploring the power of artists while questioning the uniqueness and inherent value structure of the creative process In the 1990s Gavin Turk

    Paying tribute to the themes of doubling and mistaken identity Grimonprez creates a unique interpretation of Alfred Hitchcock s illustrious cameo television and film appearances through which Grimonprez examines the influence of this cinema icon on a deeper more socio political level The film covers the post World War II period characterized by prosperity and innocent consumerism as well as institutionalized fear through the beginning of the 1960s featuring Sputnik Nikita Khrushchev and Richard Nixon The cold war era was characterized by the conquest of space sexual politics anxiety and paranoia disrupting the idyllic American suburban dream In the words of Alfred Hitchcock Television brought murder into the American home where it has always belonged Not without humor DOUBLE TAKE invites the viewer to question today s hegemony of the image the truth and lies of reality and its influence on our society politics and culture A compilation of short films selected by Grimonprez and Charlotte Léouzon titled MAYBE THE SKY IS REALLY GREEN AND WE RE JUST COLORBLIND accompanies the exhibition Shown for the first time in New York it is presented in the form of a YouTube o Theque library which contains clips from online television cell phone videos blogs and YouTube As a product of a sophisticated generation brought up on a diet of television and homemade productions Grimonprez mixes reality and fiction in a wholly innovative fashion and presents contemporary history as a multi perspectival context readily open to manipulation Johan Grimonprez s work is included in numerous collections such as the Centre Georges Pompidou Paris France the Kanazawa Art Museum Japan the National Gallery Berlin Germany and the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art Denmark Curatorial projects have been hosted at major museums worldwide such as the Whitney Museum in New York The San Francisco Museum
