    Hockney Annie Leibovitz Joseph Kosuth Norman Mailer Lisette Model Ileana Sonnabend Sam Wagstaff and Andy Warhol are depicted alongside many of their contemporaries The inspiration for the exhibition comes from the book Robert Mapplethorpe Certain People A Book of Portraits published in 1985 The exhibition explores the fascinating relationship the artist nurtured over a period of more than a decade with his sitters Mapplethorpe had a unique ability to capture the essence of his subjects his gift is clear in these diverse and revealing portraits In the preface of Certain People Susan Sontag noted Being photographed by Mapplethorpe was different from being photographed by anyone else He reassures differently encourages differently is permissive differently Indeed these intimate portraits convey a strong sense of the trust and complicity that existed between Mapplethorpe and his subjects as well as his ability to capture their different personas in a striking manner However as a group the photographs constitute a unique document attesting to the vibrancy and dynamism of a generation of individuals who were vital presences on the New York art scene in the late 20th century and represent a virtual who s who time capsule of the art world at a particularly

    important collection of Kjærholm works ever assembled alongside significant modern and contemporary art works that together showcase a compelling dialogue between furniture art and installation Poul Kjærholm one of the most significant furniture designers of the 20th century was the subject of a historical survey by both galleries in December 2004 His furniture appeals to architects design aficionados and serious furniture and art collectors for its understated elegance clean lines and inspired rethinking of modernist iconography As Kjærholm s furniture is highly sought after as the perfect complement for living within the contemporary collecting environment Sean Kelly Gallery and R Gallery are building on their initial relationship by offering another opportunity to experience his work The four limited edition furniture pieces are based on original Kjærholm prototypes They will include the iconic PK 12 chair in braided leather the PK 50 conference table as well as the Reol Modular Bookcase never commercially produced during Kjærholm s lifetime and the Aluminum Tripod Chair originally produced in extremely limited quantities Each piece is being hand built in Denmark by the emerging generation of exceptionally trained cabinetmakers and craftsmen under the close supervision of the Kjærholm family The furniture will be debuted at Art Basel Miami and Design Miami respectively where it is sure to garner considerable attention All of the limited edition furniture pieces will be individually stamped and numbered The comprehensive catalogue raisonné to be released in Spring 2008 will prove to be the definitive and authoritative publication on Kjærholm The essay and seventy individual furniture entries have been written by Michael Sheridan principal of Sheridan Architect in New York He specializes in arts related architecture and is an internationally recognized expert on modern Scandinavian architecture and design Designed by award winning graphic artist Takaaki Matsumoto this visually stunning book echoes

    1929 80 was a furniture architect whose unique aesthetic language combined industrial materials and techniques with a craftsman s approach to details and materials The catalogue has been authored by the American architect Michael Sheridan an internationally recognized expert on Scandinavian architecture and design and the world s foremost authority on Kjærholm This volume includes 70 entries written by Sheridan that document analyze and describe all of Kjærholm s realized designs The entries include furniture dimensions and information about materials as well as a wealth of drawings and vintage photographs The book features the renowned Modernist photographer Keld Helmer Petersen s iconic photographs of Kjaerholm s work Helmer Petersen was Kjærholm s creative partner for three decades and documented his furniture and exhibitions over this period Sheridan s biographical essay traces and discusses the development of Kjærholm s formal vision over the course of his career Supplementary information includes a timeline of production dates manufacturer information notes on materials and maintenance and production stamps The book was compiled with the assistance of the Kjærholm family and includes a foreword by Hanne Kjærholm It was designed by Takaaki Matsumoto one of the most respected designers of art books in the world

    nature of one s sense of one s own body and its relationship in space to others is challenged In Gormley s words Architecture is supposed to be the location of security and certainty about where you are It is supposed to protect you from the weather from darkness from uncertainty Blind Light undermines all of that You enter this interior space that is the equivalent of being on top of a mountain or at the bottom of the sea It is very important for me that inside it you find the outside Also you become the immersed figure in an endless ground literally the subject of the work Blind Light was included this summer in Gormley s hugely acclaimed exhibition at the Hayward Gallery London to unprecedented public and critical approbation Some 208 000 people experienced the installation making it the most visited exhibition of a living artist in the Hayward s 39 year history The exhibition was extensively covered by the media including CNN and Good Morning America The Hayward Gallery also produced an accompanying catalog titled Blind Light that includes an essay by Anthony Vidler the Dean of the School of Architecture at Cooper Union in New
